A RESEARCH REPORT FROM SIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION WITH DOMESTIC ASIAN ELEPHANTS IN NORTHERN THAILAND, 1994.
A Potential Foundation For An Elephant / Internet Interface? A Potential Solution To The Elephant Problem?
INTRODUCTION
What are the potentials for communication with elephants? Where do elephants belong in the spectrum of species in communication with humans?
Many domestic Asian Elephants seem to have a continuously variable level of motivation. They seem to be constantly making judgements such as "How hungry am I now? How hard do I want to work for that bunch of bananas?" An observation often made by mahouts of domestic Asian elephants is that they are like children, that they lack initiative and altruism. They don't usually perform trained behaviors without the direction of a mahout and they almost never rescue a mahout from danger.
But are these characteristics much different from those of humans that have been enslaved?
Wild elephants show great initiative, altruism and cooperation in rescue and in many other areas of behavior. Orphaned elephants that have been raised by humans with kindness, sometimes show great friendship, initiative and altruism toward humans.

Email this page to a friend with a personal message American Sign Language is a rich language of gestures and hand symbols. Each gesture represents either a concept, a word or a letter. In those cases where a gesture doesn't exist for a particular idea, a word can be spelled out, letter by letter, using finger spelling. Want to learn some sign language? Better than a printed book, the following sites use animation and movies to illustrate the many subtleties of signing.

L.T. ON LINE PUZZLES
We have created and added these free, interactive, on-line jigsaw puzzles for your use. They are in a Download format using RealPlayer that you may need to install (Look for RealPlayer 8 Basic. It's free. Click here.)
But the best news...
You can't lose the pieces! Other Notes That You Have Told Us About: Unfortunately, these puzzles do not work on MAC computers. Sorry. With the larger the puzzle pieces (for younger audiences), the more distinct the lines are between each piece. This is even more noticeable on black and white graphics but does not affect the pleasure of doing the puzzle. * If you are returning to the same puzzle for a second, third or hundredth time, we have found it quicker to select "Yes" to the prompt question "Replace this file?" Computers are smart. When you do return to a page anywhere, the loading speed is significantly reduced. Pathway memory is a good thing. * Puzzle pieces tend to 'hide' under the menu in the upper left corner. Place your cursor on the top of the menu box, just as you would any puzzle piece, and move it somewhere else.

Magical History Tour Back to Other Native American Nations and Peoples INDIAN SIGN LANGUAGE NUMBERS TO COUNT: Usually count to ten by starting with the right hand closed, palm turned to the
person being addressed, at shoulder level. For number one, the little finger is raised; for two, the
next finger; for three, the middle finger is raised; for four, the index finger; and for five, the
thumb, thus ending with all five fingers raised. For the numbers six through ten, keep the right
hand as it is, with palm out and all five fingers extended. For six, touch your left thumb to the tip
of your right thumb. For seven, raise the left index finger; for eight, add the middle finger; for
nine, add the left ring finger; and for ten, the left little finger, so that all ten fingers are now
raised. EQUAL: Place both hands in front of the chest closed except for the index fingers, which are
extended parallel to one another. Then move the hands towards the person being addressed
