ign Language interpreters are gaining popularity in theatres from Broadway to Boise. With the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, along with increased sensitivity to Sign Language and the Deaf community, theatre producers and venues throughout the country find themselves exploring the opportunity to reach out to a new audience via interpreted performances. Unfortunately, interpreters who are experienced in performance interpreting are few and far between. In addition, most production staff have a limited understanding of the variety of issues associated with the provision of quality interpreted performance. It is hoped that this Web site will serve as a resource for both novice and experienced interpreters, as well as for theatre staff wanting to learn about sign language interpreted performance. For the Interpreter and For the Theatre are good places to start.
Getting ready for a performance of your own? Fill out our form , and we'll make sure to include it in our list of interpreted performances. Better yet, send us a photo, and we'll be happy to feature you on the site.

" We have been called deaf-mutes, mutes, objects of charity, deaf and dumb, semi-mutes, dummy, and now, hearing impaired. We have been described as 'the most misunderstood among the sons of man.' Some of us are deaf and some of us are Deaf. Some of us use American Sign Language and some of us do not. This exhibition is our untold and largely unknown history. American Sign Language
On this page:
What is American Sign Language?
American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, complex language that employs signs made with the hands and other movements, including facial expressions and postures of the body. It is the first language of many deaf North Americans, and one of several communication options available to deaf people. ASL is said to be the fourth most commonly used language in the United States. Top
Is sign language the same around the globe?
No one form of sign language is universal. For example, British Sign Language (BSL) differs notably from ASL. Different sign languages are used in different countries or regions. Top
Where did ASL originate?
The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear. Many people believe that ASL came mostly from French Sign Language (FSL). Others claim that the foundation for ASL existed before FSL was introduced in America in 1817. It was in that year that a French teacher named Laurent Clerc, brought to the United States by Thomas Gallaudet, founded the first school for the deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. Clerc began teaching FSL to Americans, though many of his students were already fluent in their own forms of local, natural sign language. Today's ASL likely contains some of this early American signing. Which language had more to do with the formation of modern ASL is difficult to prove. Modern ASL and FSL share some elements, including a substantial amount of vocabulary. However, they are not mutually comprehensible.

Why Sign With Your Child?
By: Lisa Hopen, CEO of Baby Steps Video
Why sign with your child? Imagine waking from a sound sleep. Walking into your child’s room as she stands in her crib crying. Is she hungry? Wet? In pain? You quickly evaluate her needs to no avail. She is unable to express her concerns to you. You feel helpless.
Now imagine for a moment as you walk through the door and sweep your child into your arms, she signs “water”. You give her a cup of water as she smiles at you in appreciation. You kiss her and put her back to bed. What a success! She was able to communicate her needs to you and you were able to satisfy them. Shortly after birth, infants are equipped with the ability to comprehend language. However, they usually are not able to produce speech until after 12 to 24 months of age. As parents, we are left to wonder what is going on inside their little heads as we wait in anticipation for their first words. While their articulators (mouth, lips, tongue, teeth) are slowly maturing, they are quickly mastering their manual dexterity (ability to manipulate objects with their hands). By teaching your child gestures or signs as well as spoken words, they are more quickly able to understand and communicate with the world around them.

    About Auslan
    A real language
Sign language has been in existence in some form for thousands of years, and is referred to in ancient Greek writings. However, for much of its history sign language has been regarded as an inadequate and inferior substitute suitable only for those deaf people "not clever enough" to be able to learn "normal" speech. In recent years, however, research on sign language has proved that sign languages are true languages in every sense. Auslan is formally recognised in Australian Federal policy statements ( Lo Bianco, 1987 Dawkins, 1991 ) as a "community language other than English". In "The Use of Australian Sign Language by Deaf People", (1991), Hyde and Power wrote: "There are about 15,400 Deaf people in Australia who use signs. The majority of these Deaf people use this language every day". Return to top of page
