A Creole society was born from this, which collected in Free Town. In 1896 the area around Free Town became an English protectorate. The taxes, which the English imposed, started a revolt which the English stopped immediately but which forced them to take over the whole region. Freetown Freetown contains numerous colleges, a technical institute and schools, as well as mosques and churches. It also contains an excellent natural harbor which was an important naval base during the second World War. It is also the site of a number of colleges and universities including the University of Sierra Leone. Freetown has some of the best beaches in Africa, Lumley Beach and River No2 Beach.

Sierra Leone has a high annual population growth rate of 3.6 percent (2001). Freetown, the capital, is the largest city. Other major towns include Kenema and Bo, both in the southern interior. There are about 18 ethnic groups that exhibit similar cultural features, such as secret societies, chieftaincy, patrilineal descent, and farming methods. The Mende, found in the east and south, and the Temne in the north form the two largest groups. Other major groups include the Limba, Kuranko, Susu, Yalunka, and Loko, in the north; the Kono and Kissi, in the east; and the Sherbro, in the southwest. Minor groups include the coastal Bullom, Vai, and Krim and the Fulani and Malinke (Mandingo), who are immigrants from Guinea concentrated in the north and east. The Creoles—descendants of free blacks who colonized the coast in the 19th century—are found mainly in the Western Area and Freetown. Ethnic complexity is further enhanced by the presence of Lebanese and Indian traders in urban centres.

Introduction
The use of children as soldiers in government, paramilitary and rebel forces in the Sierra Leone conflict was one of the most highly publicised cases of child rights abuse in recent years. Portrayals of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in particular cited the mass recruitment, chiefly through abduction, of under 18s into the movement.
The crisis of youth in Sierra Leone and other armed conflicts no doubt helped drive the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the use of Children in Armed Conflict into force in February 2002, and drew the attention of myriad UN agencies and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Interventions on behalf of child combatants have sought to negotiate the release of abductees, to oversee the disarmament, demobilisation, psycho-social care and reintegration of child combatants and to assist children in the tracing and reunification of families, as well as arranging alternative care for orphans and other unaccompanied children.
The socialisation of the young generation in warfare has also left the need for an understanding and subsequent response to the political crisis of youth in Sierra Leone, which takes into account the frame of reference of a generation of young people that has spent the past 10 years surviving warfare. For these people peace (life without the influence of war) has become something of a mythical, abstract concept. Young people are left with the bewildering task of inventing their own peace. To do so will require the reconfiguration of their society, with clear guidance and strong messages from governments and authority figures conveying support and example to counteract the sense of betrayal that is undoubtedly felt by much of the young generation in this country.

Surrounded by Guinea, Ivory Coast and Liberia on the West African coast, Sierra Leone is land of human diversity and mineral riches. As a political entity, the country is byproduct of the slave trade. Late in the 18th century, it was established as a colony for freed slaves who wanted to return safely to Africa. Sadly, the country subsequently became an example of the lasting chaos that the slave trade made of many African cultures. When the Portuguese began frequenting these West African shores in the 15th century, the territory was divided among small chieftaincies, many of them hostile to one another. Hence, the region yielded slaves readily, as one group was willing to sell members of another for profit. When British abolitionists colonized Sierra Leone, they hoped to resettle freed slaves from throughout the New World, and began doing so in Freetown in 1792. The powerful Temne people were understandably mistrustful and resisted forcefully. But in the first half of the 19th century, the colony attracted Africans from all over, and together they made the capital, Freetown, a vibrant economic center and the home of a new culture, Krio. But outside the city, old animosities and slaving continued right up to 1928, when the British finally ended the illicit trade. Shortly thereafter, diamond and gold mining emerged as centerpieces of the local economy. After independence in 1961, Sierra Leone swung from a conservative, market economy government to a far more left-leaning government during the `70s when the collapse of the oil market hit hard undermining, among other things, the country's recording industry. Things looked up briefly in the `80s, but in 1991, Liberia's militant rebel leader Charles Taylor brought that country's civil war to Sierra Leone, and the country has known a period of severe brutality and chaos ever since.
