Dictionary Definition of Native American

Native Americans American Indians Amerindians , or Red Indians ) are indigenous peoples , who lived in the Americas prior to the European colonization ; some of these ethnic groups still exist. The name "Indians" was bestowed by Christopher Columbus , who mistakenly believed that the places he found them were among the islands to the southeast of Asia known to Europeans as the Indies. (See further discussion below). Canadians now generally use the term First Nations to refer to Native Americans. In Alaska , because of legal use in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act ( ANSCA ) and because of the presence of the Inuit Yupik , and Aleut peoples, the term Alaskan Native predominates. (See further discussion below.) Native Americans officially make up the majority of the population in Bolivia Peru and Guatemala and are significant in most other former Spanish colonies, with the exception of Costa Rica Cuba Argentina Dominican Republic and Uruguay Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

Honesty, integrity hallmarks of Native Indian communication discourse
A TIME BEFORE DECEPTION: TRUTH IN COMMUNICATION, CULTURE, AND ETHICS. By Thomas W. Cooper. Clear Light Publishers, Santa Fe, New Mexico, US. 1998. pp. 244. Pbk. US$14.95. By J A Progler Anyone who has watched old American westerns - movies about Cowboys and Indians - will recall the popular phrase uttered by many an Indian, 'pale face speak with forked tongue.' Along with several other Indianisms, this one entered into American popular culture to such a degree that it lost its original rhetorical strength. But what this phrase meant, besides connoting that the White man was like a snake, was that white people 'spoke out of both sides of their mouth.' To put it simply, White people were double-dealing liars. The abysmal record of broken treaties and land swindling deals alone illustrates the pithy wisdom of this Native observation. But there are other dimensions to the popular aphorism: it also speaks to Native worldviews, traditional forms of expression and communication, and the sacred ecology of indigenous peoples. Thomas W. Cooper, Professor of Mass Communication and former assistant to the late Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan, researched communication and ethics among Native American peoples for his aptly titled latest work, A Time Before Deception. Cooper lived among several Native nations in Canada and the US, gaining access to their sacred spaces and sense of trust.

Original sources are cited in this collection of 121 traditional stories, personal narratives, and historical traditions from thirteen tribes of the Northern Rockies. The stories are arranged by language group, each section preceded by a brief historical note on the tribes represented. This valuable, clearly written resource includes source notes, a bibliography, and an index. Monroe, Jean Guard; Williamson, Ray A.; Sturat, Edgar, illus. They Dance in the Sky: Native American Star Myths . Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin; 1987. 118 pages. (upper elementary/secondary) *. This book is a well-documented presentation of American Indian star stories. The first two chapters compare various myths about the Pleiades and the Big Dipper. The rest of the book is arranged by tribe or region-Southwest, Pawnee, Plains, California, Northwest Coast, and Southeast. An introductory paragraph to each story provides a brief outline of the tribe's history. Where available, explanations are suggested as to how the stories might relate to the seasonal movement of the stars. A bibliography provides sources (generally scholarly papers) for each myth presented. The preface notes that such stories reinforce behavioral standards for the people. It also explains that the stories are meant to be read aloud, since a certain quality is always lost when an oral text is set down in print. Black-and-white drawings.
