Compiled by Adolf and Beverly Hungry Wolf In a region where native tribes were feared for their cunning and aggressiveness, the Flathead people stood out like an island of safety and friendship. Even critical missionaries of the last century credited the Flatheads with having the virtues of modesty, frankness, courage, goodness and generosity. "A nation of chiefs," said one of the Catholic priests. Although the people bravely fought their hereditary enemies - Blackfoot, Shoshone, Gros Ventre and Sioux - they never once fought against the Westward moving white men, who later cheated the tribe out of the Bitterroot Valley. A notorious case of intermarriage was recorded by Teit. A man named John Grant lived among the people. His mother was from the nearby Kalispel tribe; his father had been a trader for the Hudson's Bay Company. Grant lived in a round house with six bedrooms, each occupied by one of his six wives. Each wife was from a different tribe, including Crow and Shoshone. He later left his wives and children and took off to Red River, Manitoba. His descendants stayed on the reservation and intermarried there.

Native American languages It is not possible to determine exactly how many languages were spoken in the New World before the arrival of Europeans or how many people spoke these languages. Some scholars estimate that the Western Hemisphere at the time of the first European contact was inhabited by 40 million people who spoke 1,800 different tongues. Another widely accepted estimate suggests that at the time of Columbus more than 15 million speakers throughout the Western Hemisphere used more than 2,000 languages; the geographic divisions within that estimate are 300 separate tongues native to some 1.5 million Native Americans N of Mexico, 300 different languages spoken by roughly 5 million people in Mexico and Central America, and more than 1,400 distinct tongues used by 9 million Native Americans in South America and the West Indies.

W The event offers a special opportunity to meet the artists and to learn about and purchase their work. Katherine Padulo, chairperson for the 2002 show, says the decision to highlight Native American crafts grew from a recognition of its increasing popularity with collectors and the general public. The Native American exhibitors represent a number of western tribes from the United States and Canada including Shoshone-Yokut, Shawnee, Jemez Pueblo, Isleta Pueblo, Hopi, Spokane, Big Stone Cree, Shuswap/Stlitlimx, Pascua Yaqui, and Navajo. Ancestral and tribal traditions influence artists Black Eagle creates artifacts such as war shirts, medicine shields, warrior pipes, and pipe bags using real bison and deer sinews, rawhides and ground pigments from Mother Earth the way his Shoshone-Yokut ancestors did. Though difficult to obtain, Shoshone brain-tanned smoked deerskin and antique (pre-1900) beads are used in many of his finest pieces. Many of his creations come from dreams and revolve around the importance of living as a part of nature. A sculptor in clay and bronze, Joe Cajero Jr. grew up at the Jemez Pueblo in the mountains north of Albuquerque, N.M. As a child he accompanied his mother, a potter, to Indian art shows throughout the southwest. As a teenager he made small animal figures from clay and sold them to tourists. Following high school, he attended the Institute of American Indian Arts. Today Cajero is internationally known for his smiling Koshare figures (a black and white striped Pueblo clown figure used in ceremonies and dances).
