SHOOTING REPORT
Wednesday, September 20 Faulds bags gold in shoot-off From John Goodbody in Sydney The sense of injustice felt in the British countryside, particularly among the shooting community, that their activities are scorned in the wake of the Dunblane tragedy, received global publicity yesterday when Richard Faulds won a gold medal in the double trap event. Faulds, 23, the son of a Hampshire farmer, spoke after his victory over Australia's Russell Mark, the defending champion, of how much damage his sport has suffered from tragedies in which guns have been used by maniacs and criminals. He said: "Dunblane has done so much harm to the sport. It's got nothing to do with competitive shooting. We got dragged into it afterwards. Of course, we all felt for the families. The incident was dreadful." James Mair, the British assistant coach, was more outspoken saying: "Dunblane was very bad for the sport. People think those who have guns are lunatics." However, among the first people to congratulate Faulds was Kate Hoey, the Minister for Sport who, like the new Olympic champion, was brought up using guns on a farm. She hugged Faulds in her delight at his triumph, Britain’s second gold medal of these Games. She said: "I think some of the criticism about shooting has been misdirected. The sport has gone through a difficult time with the anti-gun lobby but it is an Olympic sport and these young people are just as dedicated as any other athletes. They work just has hard and they train just as hard. When people watch it they must see how exciting it is."

Gold Medal Gunslingers
Combat Shooting Targets the Olympic Games
Section One: Targeting the Olympics
The Olympic Games are the world's premier sporting event. In the most recent Summer Olympics, held in 1996 in Atlanta, 197 countries competed for medals in 27 sporting events and participated in numerous additional exhibition sports. The Olympic Charter sets out the ideals and the aims of the Olympic Movement. Under the Charter, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) "participates in actions to promote peace" and "dedicates its efforts to ensuring that...violence is banned." The IOC's goals include "the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles" and "encouraging the establishment of a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity." As the Charter summarizes these noble aims: "The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world." Now, the peaceful intent of the Olympic Movement is being challenged. The gun lobby—eager to expand the perception of "sporting" activities involving firearms—has launched an international effort to make combat shooting an Olympic sport. Boosters of combat shooting hope that association with the Olympics, under the euphemistic name of "practical" shooting, will legitimize and popularize both their competitions and the increasingly lethal weapons they use. By establishing combat shooting as an international sport, the gun lobby would also advance several of its most cherished goals. Olympic status for combat shooting would create new legal arguments in favor of non-sporting firearms, new opportunities to attract children into the gun culture, and new marketing opportunities for struggling gun makers.

Photographing Olympic Sports
by New York Institute of Photography
In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces. What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on! One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge! In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.
