Introduction
Shooting is one of the original eight Olympic sports and has been part
of nearly every Modern Olympic Games since 1896. Currently there are
17 Olympic shooting events for both men and women in four different
disciplines; rifle, pistol, running target and shotgun. The current
Olympic shotgun events include trap, double trap and skeet. United
States shooting sports athletes have won six medals in the last two
Olympics, five of which were in the shotgun events; a gold, a silver and three bronze. Shooters have won 72 individual Olympic medals for the United States sine 1896, more than in any other Olympic sport except for athletics and swimming. Headquartered at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, USA Shooting is recognized by both the US Olympic Committee and the International Shooting Sport Federation as the national governing body for Olympic shooting in the United States. There seems to be increased interest in Olympic Trapshooting recently. There
certainly has been an increase in the inquiries that I have received concerning
training youth in the Olympic Trapshooting Disciplines. In the past, such
training opportunities have been limited. That too is beginning to change.
This year there will be two Summer Camps dedicated to teaching young American
Trapshooters the Olympic Clay Target games of Trap and Double Trap.
The first of these, the 2004 Shotgun National Junior Advanced Shooting Camp will
be held Monday, June 21 through Thursday, June 24. This camp is operated by the
National Rifle Association and the Youth Development Shotgun Team with support
of and coaches provided by USA Shooting. I am the head coach of this camp, as I was last year. The purpose of the camp is to identify young shotgunners with potential and to train them in advanced competition skills, including the International Shotgun Disciplines, Trap and Double Trap.

Shooting Sports have been part of the Olympic Games since the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. In Athens, Greece during the first Olympic Games shooters competed in two bigbore rifle and three pistol events. Seventeen Olympic events in four Olympic disciplines (rifle, pistol, running target, and shotgun) will be contested at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Participation has grown steadily through the years. While only four nations competed in the shooting events in 1896, 423 shooters from one hundred different nations participated at the 1996 Atlanta Games in shooting.
In order for a shooter to compete in the Games, the athlete must shoot a minimum qualification score (MQS) for the respective event at one of the International Shooting Sports Foundation's (ISSF) supervised Championships during the four years between Olympic Games.
Women have been allowed to compete since 1972, participating with men until 1980. At the 1984 Games, they took part in a separate program consisting of three events, but they kept the right to compete with the men in the two mixed events - Olympic trap and skeet until 1992. At the 1996 Games those trap and skeet events were conducted for men only. However, a new event - double trap - was added in 1996 that allowed men and women to compete together.

By Alcorn Sports Information
HOUSTON, Tx. – By way of shooting a combined 310, the Alcorn State University men’s golf team concluded day one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in second place. Meanwhile, the women had a tougher afternoon as the Lady Braves sit sixth entering Wednesday’s competition.
The men managed three players to place with top-ten finishes as both Greg Banks and Njuguna Ngugi shot an identical 74 on the Par 72 Quail Valley-La Quinta Golf Course. Marlo Lamela struggled on the front nine but recovered on the backside as he shot a six over par (78) to help lead the way for the Braves.
Jackson State’s Fredelis Malembaka was the only player to shoot under par on the day as he recorded a 71 to lead the way for the first place Tigers, who shot a 296 in the first day of play.
On the ladies side, Alcorn State concluded day one in with a team score of 411. Despite, the overall woes, freshman Ada Lamela gave a stellar individual performance via shooting an 80, which was good enough for second place. Classmate Margie McLeod was the only other Lady Braves to shoot under triple digits with as she notched an 87.
Southern University, led by Danielle Sells individual score of 79, blew away the competition as the Lady Jags shot 14 strokes better than second-place Jackson State with a 328 team score.
