The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the Biathlon, called "military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the Biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and Biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960.

Shooting is considered one of the most popular sports internationally. It requires good physical and psychological condition, as well as technical perfection. It is open to men, women and children of all ages for recreation. On the championship level, it is the only sport where you will see a great difference in age between competitors. For instance, Konstantin Lukashyk, a 17 year old competitor representing the Commonwealth of Independent States, won the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Pistol event at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. The runner-up was the 58 year old Swedish competitor, Ragnar Skanaker, who had won the gold at the 1972 Munich Games and silver medals at the Los Angeles and Seoul Games (1984, 1988).  ATHENS 2004 Shooting All Shooting events in the ATHENS 2004 Games will take place in the Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Centre , on the following ranges:

Background Current news World Class calendar ... News Archive What is the World Class Performance Programme and what does it mean for shooting? Richard Faulds took gold in Sydney Gold and silver medals for Richard Faulds and Ian Peel in Sydney meant that shooting sports earned £1.3m of Lottery money to support British prospects for the next Olympic Games in Athens 2004. But it's not a simple case of handing out money to our top rifle, pistol and clay target shooters and letting them get on with it. Lottery funding is hard-won and there are, rightly, strings attached. One of the conditions for this funding - for any sport, not just shooting - is that a proper programme has to be agreed to the Government's satisfaction to measure how the money is used to help achieve further Olympic success. UK Sport is the body responsible for distributing funds to shooting sports and ensuring that the money is used wisely. It liaises with the Great Britain Target Shooting Federation (GBTSF) - the body responsible for international shooting sports in the UK - which in turn appointed a Performance Director in January 2002 to meet UK Sport's requirements, develop the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) and ensure that it stays on track. John Leighton-Dyson took up the challenge and has developed and implemented a thorough programme to draw out the best possible performances from the 15 talented shooters supported through the new scheme in the run-up to Athens 2004.

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
    By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which
