Shooting: Wildcard Lee Wung Yew eyes Olympic history By Stanley Ho, TODAY SINGAPORE : Multiple SEA Games gold medallist Lee Wung Yew has been given a wildcard entry to the Athens Olympics in August, it was revealed on Friday. And believe it or not, Lee thinks he can bag Singapore's second Olympic medal, after Tan Howe Liang's weightlifting silver in the 1960 Games in Rome. "I know some people will say 'fat hope' even before a single shot is fired, but I'm still going all out to clinch a medal," said the Siglap Secondary School English and Physical Education teacher.

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Shooting Stars,
The Reggie and Cheryl Miller Story By: John Shepler In the summer skies of California, there are stars that young boys and girls wish on, hoping their dreams will come true. It's the magic that mothers and fathers share with their children, what mothers and fathers have passed down through the generations to each youngster who catches sight of their first meteor streaking across the heavens. "When you wish upon a star..." It rings almost as a promise, a certainty of fortune. One young boy is not so sure it applies to him. He twirls the orange ball between his finger tips and looks down at the metal braces that grip and imprison his twisted legs. It's his legacy of birth. Hips deformed, ankles turning inward. Perhaps the stars have already cast his fate. Perhaps he is forever destined to sit by the window and look out at other children running and jumping and shooting the basketball in a long-reaching arc through the summer sky. At night, if it were luminous, that ball might be mistaken for another shooting star. In the light of day, its flight and swish through the net is a painful reminder that dreams can be so close and yet impossible to reach. His mother sees the same ball, the same children, her children, and the same window. They are destined, all destined, including the one she must fit with metal braces and orthopedic shoes. "You'll be out there soon, honey. You've just got to get your legs stronger."

http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/olympics.htm
OLYMPIC ARCHERY
Archery first appeared as a sport in the 1900 Olympics Games in Paris and was held at the Games of 1904, 1908 and 1920. However, international rules had not yet been developed and each host country used its own format. As a result, archery events in these early Olympic Games varied widely. Because of the lack of uniform international rules archery was then dropped from the Olympic Games.
The Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc (FITA), the international governing body of the sport, was founded in 1931 and implemented standardized rules for competition. It allowed the first World Championship to be held that same year. After countries adopted the new rules, archery returned to the 1972 Games in Munich.
Initially, only individual competition took place - the team competition was added in 1988. There are four archery events held at the Olympics: Men's Individual, Women's Individual, Men's Team and Women's Team. Archers used to shoot a double FITA round of 288 total arrows, with the championship decided by the highest total score. In an effort to make the sport more exciting, the format was changed to head-to-head elimination for the top 64 competitors beginning with the 1992 Olympics. Individual Competition
  • The format of the men's and women's individual competition is the same and consists of a ranking round followed by the FITA Olympics round.

About Biathlon
Description and history of Biathlon - how the sport evolved... This page was last updated23 July 2003 - Under construction
What is Biathlon:
Biathlon is a Winter Olympic Sport which combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting. There is also a warm weather variant called Summer Biathlon which replaces skiing with running. In a typical Winter race, a Biathlete is required to ski with his or her rifle over a set distance to a shooting range, where five shots at five knockdown targets 50 m down range are taken from prone position. Depending on the format, either a time penalty or penalty laps are assessed for missed shots. The racer then skiis another loop, and comes back to the shooting range for another set of shots - this time from a standing stance. Again penalties are assessed for missed shots. The biathlete then skiis a final loop to complete the race. A more complete description of the various race formats may be found here Though a seemingly unlikely combination of events - one is an aerobic activity which requires strength, speed, and endurance; the other is a passive activity which requires concentration and a steady hand (difficult after you've been skiing all out!), the biathlon concept evolved from two activities which have a long history - hunting and winter warfare.
1994 Olympic Postcard
Hunting Origins
Rock paintings depicting hunters with bow and arrow moving on sliding timber have been found near Roedoey, Norway which date back to the Neolithic age (about 3000 BC). However, the first written descriptions of hunting on skiis come from Roman, Greek, and Chinese historical writings. These include such well known authors as the Roman poet Virgil, who described hunting on skiis in 400 BC.
