The "Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago" is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the study and preservation of Lake Michigan shipwrecks and to research topical underwater subjects of historical interest surrounding this great lake. Disasters on the Lakes were all too common. There are probably no equal areas of commercial waterways that, if drained, would reveal as many lost vessels as would the Great Lakes. So, return with us via these web pages and links to a day when ships moved by white canvas, hemp rope and brute force, evolving to steam fueled by wood and coal, to the ships of today. The following are just a few pages describing our activities.. Enjoy your visit..!

The Roman Shipwrecks Project
Principal Investigators: JD Hill, M Walsh J.Dix , and J.Adams
Evidence that Roman wrecks do in fact exist in British waters comes in the form of considerable quantities of continental pottery recovered in the nets of fishermen working in inshore waters although the sources of this material remain unidentified.
Fig. 1 Samian ware from Pudding Pan - part of the Townley collection at the British Museum This project intends to conduct detailed surveys of three areas from which Roman material has been recovered in order to locate the sources. The surveys will combine the latest high-resolution marine geophysical survey techniques with diver surveys. The areas identified include an area off the North Kent coast at Herne Bay known as Pudding Pan or Pan Sand, the approaches to St Peter Port harbour in Guernsey, and an additional area yet to be chosen from the results of a survey of Roman material recovered by fishermen. Current work is focussed on Pudding Pan/Pan Sands.

SHIPWRECKS OF GALLIPOLI
Numerous diving schools now operate along Turkey 's coasts, particularly in the Aegean and the Mediterranean, and during the summer months around a thousand people go diving each day. In the North Aegean, however, mild temperatures for much of the year make it far easier for even fairly inexperienced divers to explore the large number of British, French and Italian ships sunk around Gallipoli and the Dardannelles in Çanakkale during the World War I. Many Turkish and foreign divers are attracted to this area for the same reason. The Gallipoli campaign commenced on 18 March 1915 when the British navy sought to attack Istanbul via the Çanakkale Strait, or ancient Dardanelles. When their attempt to get through the strait failed, a joint offensive by British, French and Italian fleets was launched on 25 April 1915. As well as a bombardment from the sea, thousands of troops were landed on the Gallipoli peninsular. The unexpected Turkish resistance and military skills of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk led to the failure of this campaign and the Allies withdrew from Gallipoli on 9 January 1916. Over that period of nearly a year, several hundreds ships and boats sunk in the coastal waters between Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay on the western side of the peninsular. These included several war ships, landing craft, and lighters carrying troops and provisions.

In 2002 representatives from the New South Wales Heritage Office visited the ABC with a story to tell about a project they had completed regarding famous Shipwrecks off the NSW coast.
The Maritime Heritage Program had researched a number of shipwrecks that had been such a significant part of history that they had a town or landmark named after them. The idea of turning this material into a radio and online series appealed so much it quickly grew from being a New South Wales project to one that looked at famous wrecks in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia as well.
With the assistance of Maritime Heritage state offices around the country, ABC Radio researched the stories, speaking to witnesses and survivors, researchers and historians and in some cases visiting the wrecks with divers.
The result is a collection of exciting tales of intrigue, mystery and adventure on the high seas ... all of which contribute to Australia's colourful past, and the presence of now-famous landmarks along today's coastline.

Basically it would take me far too long. So, I'll cover some of the more popular wrecks. I've been to most of them, and actually published articles on the Material Service Barge and the David Dows. I stopped writing them because the pay was, well, let's say I would have made more money per hour working at a hot dog stand.
Other ShipWrecks
The following wrecks are include the better known destinations in the area, as well as some of the lesser known. I should also mention that visibility is the best it has been in 15 years. Those Zebra Mussels (ecological nightmare that they are) that invaded the Great Lakes have been acting like little vacuums, sucking up the micro-organisms that were causing poor vis in Lake Michigan. The result is clarity (as we define it). So the lake may die in a decade or so - or so the scientists thought. Now they are thinking differently. Only time will tell. If you are not from the area, you will need the appropriate equipment for cold water diving. The surface temp of Lake Michigan can reach 72 degrees in the mid summer. The thermoclines (you'll encounter one to three on most wrecks) are another matter. The first kicks in at around 25'. It's a whopper - you can see and FEEL it. A 1/4" wet suit, with hood and boots is a must. Use of reef gloves at a minimum. Many wrecks have metal cable that is rusting and fraying with age, and can cause Sea Urchin type wounds - complete with little wires stuck in your skin!

During the forty year (1875-1915) history of the United States Life-Saving Service, four thousand five hundred (4,500) lives were saved from the "perils of the sea", here, on the Eastern Shore of Delaware, Maryland and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. • SAN JOSE 28.53) one of the 1733 Spanish Galleon Fleet that was struck by a hurricane as it struggled up the Florida Coast, off present day Marathon. The San Jose was carrying almost 7 million pesos in gold when she sank, and was salvaged by both Spanish and modern day salvors. Due to the archaic methods of the early, salvors and the scattered remains found by modern salvors, it appears the treasure will never run dry for the weekend potluck hunters of today. The ballast pile is in 35 feet of water but largely covered by sand, although the conditions are usually clear. Most recoveries were made directly S. of the wreck-site, but the area to the N. of the wreck has been largely unexplored, and the backside of the hurricane that hit this fleet (moving west) was driving survivors and remnants of the ship due north. For the pot-hunter, the northern sand patches and areas next to reefs may pay off with recoveries of passenger's personal items. HERRERA - another of the 1733 Galleon Fleet wrecks, this ship is also known as the "figurine" wreck due to the hundreds of animal figurines found on the site. Even though this site has been heavily worked, it still produces figurines for the potluck hunter willing to work the sand patch to the Northeast of the ballast pile. These figurines must be preserved or they will crumble shortly after recovery! Soaking the figurine in distilled water for two years removes the salt, at which time a thinned (with water) layer of Elmers Glue All is applied, after the outside surface dries, to keep the figurine from cracking. Figurines from this wreck are almost 300 years old, please don't bring them up if you're not prepared to preserve them!
