Michigan Shipwrecks

The Great Lakes have provided transportation for Michigan's inhabitants for hundreds of years. Thousands of vessels from canoes to car ferries and steamers to modern ore boats have sailed these "inland seas" and unknown numbers still remain - settled on the lakes bottom in watery graves. An estimated 6,000 vessels were lost on the Great Lakes with approximately 2, 000 of these ships located in Michigan waters.

Cornish Shipwrecks
There are two popular misconceptions about shipwrecks in Cornwall.
The first is that most wrecks were caused by wreckers' shining misleading lights from the cliffs, in the hope of bringing vessels laden with bounty onto the rocks. This was never required, as nature, with it's strong winds, heavy seas and sharp rocks, was a deadly combination ensuring a constant stream of wrecked vessels.
The second misconception is that the wreckers' deliberately killed survivors of shipwrecks to ensure they could carry off the hapless ships' cargoes.
Though there were inevitable occasions when violence was used, far more wreckers' were have likely to have drowned than the possibility of sailors being murdered. The combination of poor wages and valuable cargoes was too much to resist, with wreckers' often taken to the same treacherous seas that had caused the original occupants to abandon ship.
Shipwrecks were, however, thought to be fair game across all sections of society with sometimes hundereds of people following a troubled ship along the coast in anticipation of a rich harvest.
This is perhaps best summed up by the localised version of the saying "it's an ill wind that blows no good to Cornwall". Hundreds, perhaps thousands of wrecks, have occurred around the Cornish coast, with the following but a small sample:

8. OTHER INSTITUTIONAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ADDRESSES FOR FURTHER HISTORICAL RESEARCH
Over the course of the last decade, research interest in the history of ships and the maritime shipping industry in Canada has increased dramatically. A major component of this renewed interest has been Canada's underwater heritage - the shipwreck. Discovery of the War of 1812 wrecks Hamilton and Scourge in Lake Ontario, and the widely publicized finding of the Titanic served to heighten general public awareness of underwater archaeology and history. Activities of groups such as Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS), especially with its emphasis on historical research using archival records, have also contributed to increased demands for information stored in various records repositories across the country. The following notes have been compiled to assist the researcher who wishes to consult federal government records for information relating to shipping losses in Canada. Before describing the major sources of documentation available on shipwrecks in the custody of the Government Archives Division (GAD) of the National Archives of Canada, a few preliminary observations are in order. First, the singlemost important thing to bear in mind is that an archives is not a library. For example, there exists no master list or index to all the records pertaining to shipping losses in Canadian waters at the National Archives. Our federal archival holdings, consisting of subject files and other unpublished documents, are principally arranged according to the name of the department of government that created and/or transferred the records to GAD. Thus, federal records relating to marine casualties are generally located in the documents of the Marine Branch (Record Group 42), Transport Canada (Record Group 12) and National Defence (Record Group 24).

Welcome to the Lake Erie shipwreck pages. The intent of this site is to provide divers with information pertaining to the numerous shipwrecks at the bottom of Lake Erie and to increase awareness of this valuable historical and recreational resource.
In researching this matter we discovered that many of the available nautical reference books and charts are full of errors and myths. It is our hope that our efforts may help dispel much of this erroneous information. Toward this end we request any divers or other interested parties with pertinent data they wish to share to e-mail us at alchem@en.com
At this time we wish to thank all the individuals who have assisted us in this project. We especially wish to mention David Swayze the author of Shipwreck! and the researchers at the Institute For Great Lakes Research for the help they have provided. Pollen traces shipwrecks' roots
Plants give boats a biological birth certificate.
26 January 2004 MICHAEL HOPKIN Pollen grains are like a thumbprint for a plant species. How do you work out where an ancient ship was originally built? Try looking at the pollen caught in the joints of the wreck, suggests a French ecologist. Serge Muller, of the University of Montpellier II in France, says the range of pollen found on a shipwreck gives a snapshot of the plant species local to the boat's birthplace. The sticky resin used to seal a boat's hull can catch and trap pollen, giving the boat a biological 'birth certificate'. "I see tremendous potential for this method," says Robert Hohlfelder, an archaeologist at the University of Colorado, Boulder. "We're always searching for new ways to investigate shipwrecks. At the moment it's almost impossible to do." Muller has used the method to trace the origins of a shipwreck off the south coast of France. The , a 2,000-year-old wreck that now lies near the port of Cap d'Agde, was constructed east of Italy, he concludes If that is true, it might force historians to revise some of their ideas about ancient transport. Archaeologists had thought that small boats such as the
