December 14, 2001 H istoric Shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico Part of the mission of the MMS is to ensure that significant archaeological sites are not adversely affected by oil and gas exploration and development. This responsibility often includes the protection of historic shipwrecks. Historical research conducted for MMS studies 89-0023, 89-0024, and 89-0025 indicates that over 400 ships have sunk on the Federal OCS dating from 1625 to 1951; thousands more have sunk closer to shore in state waters during the same period. Only a handful of these have been scientifically excavated by archaeologists for the benefit of generations to come. In several cases, the MMS has partnered with state and Federal agencies conducting this research. The work conducted by the MMS and other scientists in the Gulf of Mexico contributes to our understanding of how our Nation developed by studying the technology that fostered the growth of the United States. 46. Historic Shipwrecks Of Perth - Introduction
Historic shipwrecks of Perth 16561942. The Western Australian Maritime Museum has investigated and collected data on shipwrecks over the past two decades.
http://www.mm.wa.gov.au/Museum/march/shipwrecks/Metro/Intro.html
Historic Shipwrecks of Perth 1656-1942
Introduction
The overall objective of this report is to describe the historic shipwreck resource that lies adjacent to the Perth metropolitan coastline. Survey region within Western Australia The Western Australian Maritime Museum (the Museum) first began a regional approach to wreck inspection in 1979 with a focus on the northern coast of the State (Sledge, 1979), then Jervoise Bay (McCarthy, 1979), Koombana Bay (McCarthy, 1982a), and the Abrolhos Islands (1982b).
Western Australia has the longest coastline (12,500 kilometres) of any State in Australia and a regional approach to the study of shipwrecks has logistic benefits in the planning and implementation of fieldwork. It provides a focus for management, funding resources and research. Stimulus for the selection of the Perth area for a regional study were twofold. Firstly, as the largest population base in the State is centred within its environs interpretation and publication of material about the historic shipwrecks will have the greatest impact here, servicing the needs of the widest audience. Secondly, wreck inspection requirements were able to optimise the prevailing weather patterns and fieldwork was able to be undertaken at short notice.
Another important factor in the choice of the survey area is that it acted as a major focus for colonial shipping in Western Australia. The Port of Fremantle was the main transportation network node for the State. The concentration of the thirty-eight historic wreck sites in the region reflects the level of shipping that was generated by the development of Perth.

"[Salvors] must begin to realize that we do have a responsibility to ensure that our recovery efforts meet certain minimum standards that will preserve our cumulative collected on site data, historical research and reasonable representative collections of recovered treasures and artifacts, so that future generations can share in the excitement, adventure and knowledge that we are fortunate enough to be involved in recovering."

SHIPWRECKS OF THE WANNEROO COAST
By M. J. LAPWOOD Year 10 Craigie Senior High School Work Experience, Western Australian Maritime Museum December 1992
Introduction
The coast adjacent to the City of Wanneroo which extends from Marmion to Two Rocks was visited by European mariners long before the British established the Swan River colony in 1829. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship, Vergulde Draeck foundered in 1656, to the north of Two Rocks. Only 75 crew reached shore with a few provisions. Seven of the crew sailed to Batavia (Jakarta) for assistance, leaving sixty-eight survivors stranded on a barren shore. Over the next few years, every VOC ship passing the Western Australian coast was ordered to search for signs of the castaways. In March 1658, Abraham Leeman van Santwits, first officer and navigator of the Waeckende Boey and thirteen sailors came ashore in the vicinity of Wanneroo Beach where they found wreckage from the Vergulde Draeck but no sign of survivors. Unable to return to their ship because of foul weather, and abandoned by Samuel Volkersen, the skipper of the Waeckende Boey, Leeman set sail for Batavia in an overloaded open boat. He and three sailors survived the epic journey, arriving there on 23 September. A plaque on a limestone obelisk at the end of Marcon Street Two Rocks, marks Leeman's Landing, the place where Leeman and his men came ashore.

The Saga of the Anegada Island Shipwrecks
by Tage W. Blytmann From time to time I have been contributing manuscripts and research material to The Maritime Historical Research Society . Among these are the annotated lists of shipwrecks on Anegada Island, British Virgin Islands, presented here. While the Society has been involved in a number of activities connected with maritime history over the years, it is probably the underwater shipwreck activities on Anegada that has drawn the greatest interest, especially among individuals familiar with the treacherous reefs associated with that island. I am therefore including a selection of photographs, maps and miscellany illustrating the underwater diving activities; some of the salvaged articles, and a small selection of 17th and 18th century charts of the Virgin Islands and Anegada Island.. Loosely translated from Spanish, Anegada means "the drowned island"; the highest point on the island being only 30 feet above sea level. Given the location of Anegada, close to a major north-south shipping lane, and with extensive reefs extending all around the island and up to about 11 miles seaward towards the southeast, it's no wonder it has claimed so many unwary and unfortunate mariners. The earliest recorded wreck that I have been able to document was a Spanish vessel wrecked on Anegada in 1523. The most recent wreck included in the list is that of the Spanish steamer IDA wrecked New Years Eve, 1898/99. I have not included any wrecks from the 20th century since most of these can easily be researched, or are already well documented elsewhere.

The War of 1812-Era Shipwrecks of Lake Champlain (click on image for full-size picture) Growler and Eagle , were captured in early 1813 when they incautiously ventured into the British-controlled Richelieu River. The British used them to raid ports and shipping on the lake in late July. During the winter of 1813-1814, Macdonough began the construction of a bigger squadron here at Vergennes, Vermont, several miles up the Otter Creek from Lake Champlain. Vergennes had an iron foundry that could supply spikes, bolts, and shot, water-powered sawmills, and the surrounding forests were filled with white oak and pine for ship timber. The Navy Department hired New York shipwright Noah Brown to direct the building. Saratoga , in just 40 days. Brown and Macdonough also commandeered an unfinished steamboat and completed it as the 17-gun schooner Ticonderoga Finally, Brown built six 75-foot-long (22.86 m) row galleys or gunboats, each rigged with two lateen sails and armed with two cannon. Macdonough commanded the lake through the summer of 1814, but word that the British were building a frigate at Isle aux Noix led to the construction of one additional warship for the U.S. Navy squadron. On July 23 two hundred shipwrights under the direction of Adam Brown (brother of Noah) laid the keel for a 20-gun brig at Vergennes.

NEW - NEW - NEW Loss of the schooner barney This was the first Preserve created in Michigan to help protect underwater resources. It extends due east from South Point and from Middle Island to the 150 foot contour, and follows that depth roughly north and south between the extension points. Only the Pewabic, Viator, Monrovia and Scott above are outside the Preserve boundaries. All ship traffic between the lower lakes and the lakes Michigan and Superior had to pass Thunder Bay. It was a very busy place, often fog bound and subject to large storms and unpredictable squalls. Upbound and downbound traffic are only separated by a few miles, and even that was impossible in the days of sail. The coast is very unforgiving with numerous shoals and islands of nearly solid rock. The overall result of over 150 years of shipping has left a vast collection of ships resting on the bottom, which today has become a mecca for divers, maritime historians and educators. Charter diving and air service is available in Alpena at the harbor. Many of the divable wrecks have mooring buoys attached.

Shipwrecks, adventure, tales of treasures, antique porcelain and pottery fascinate all of us. While most of us think about gold and other riches, few are able to enjoy the secrets hidden with every shipwreck.
Maritime archeology is not as glamorous as quick digs for gold, but more
rewarding for those who understand the wisdom about the past.

Each ancient shipwreck is a source for dating human habitat, manufacturing sites and old
sailing routes. The original cargo, often reduced to porcelain and pottery by the environment,
help us understand what was made and traded at different times in history. To discover these
traces of the past and to assemble the puzzle of its history, proper archeology must be carried
out or valuable information will be lost. Artifacts from unlicensed salvage are often sold as antiques without any knowledge about its origin or date.
Artifacts from Nanhai Marine Archaeology Sdn. Bhd. are different. Here collectors are assured of proper archeology, legal excavations, proper research and added knowledge about the artifacts origin, age, circumstance, provenance as well as provided with a meaningful Certificate of Authenticity confirming its provenance..

Introduction Cataraqui Sydney Cove Litherland Brahmin Cambridgeshire Bulli Tasman Svenor Nord Otago Shipwrecks of Tasmania Introduction As an island colony and later state of the Commonwealth of Australia, Tasmania has always been fundamentally dependent on shipping services to connect it to the outside world. However, lying in the path of the winds known as the 'roaring forties', the waters around Tasmania have proved treacherous to mariners. Since the wreck of the ship Sydney Cove in 1797, around 1,000 vessels of all sizes are known to have been lost in Tasmanian waters up to the present day. Although the locations of less than 10% of these shipwrecks are presently known these sites are an important part of our national maritime heritage, a unique gift from our past. While many shipwrecks can only be visited by suitably qualified divers material may also be seen on the sea shore or in tidal zones. Many shipwreck sites are often left unlocated or undisturbed for years and some natural processes of decay and decomposition are stopped or substantially slowed in the underwater environment. For these reasons shipwreck sites are time capsules which can open a window into history. Managing Tasmania's Shipwrecks
