Welcome to the NMR site (our web pages are not very fancy.... as our time is spent researching shipwrecks) Northern Maritime Research is a not-for-profit research organization dedicated to documenting North America's maritime history through the Northern Shipwrecks Database and the Canadian Marine Heritage Project . Northern Maritime Research receives no government funding and raises funds for further research through the design, production and sale of a variety of items. Northern Shipwrecks Database Project - an ever-expanding inventory of North American shipwrecks covering the last four centuries. The latest version features more than 100,000 shipwrecks. This research is available on a single searchable CD-ROM and being is sold as a fundraiser to support the continuation of this project. Canadian Marine Heritage Project - documenting each vessel built, owned or registered in Atlantic Canada along with the builders, owners and masters from 1787 to 1950. When complete, this project should contain more than 500,000 records. Combined Atlantic Diver Guide - 432-page guide detailing 207 of the best scuba diving sites and wrecks across Atlantic Canada. Originally published in 1988 as a separate volume for each of the four Atlantic provinces (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick), the 1999 edition combined all four volumes.

Islands such as Inaccessible are still poorly charted, and old sailing ships were often at the mercy of the elements. The Tristan da Cunha Group has claimed at least 22 ships, and in the past their wreckage was used to furnish islander's homes. The three confirmed wrecks on Inaccessible are as follows:

Researching Shipwrecks Two of the most requested publications of this office have been "Principal Marine Disasters" and "U.S. Merchant Ship Losses". The value of both lists, however, has been greatly exaggerated. The former was a list taken from a standard World Almanac while the latter was a list of American merchant ships that were lost during World War II. In most cases, exact positions of the merchant ships were not known or were approximated. Entries such as, "lost in North Atlantic" were not uncommon. Essentially then these lists are of little use to the serious diver. The following is a list of sources that have some information related to sunken vessels. Also please find a list of books that have been written about shipwrecks. The subject has been well-documented and these sources may provide valuable research materials. POSSIBLE SOURCES OF WRECK INFORMATION The following is a list of both government and private agencies that furnish material and/or information concerning shipwrecks: Library of Congress

About the history of water travel and shipping on Lake Superior and the state's inland waters, including shipwrecks and their conservation.

Minnesota's Historic Shipwrecks
The cold fresh water of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers have preserved an important part of our history - in shipwrecks! Each one is a unique and integral part of the fabric of America's maritime heritage. Together, they provide physical contact with and offer an exciting opportunity to explore the past. Because they represent a valuable but finite and nonrenewable resource, we must provide for their protection and preservation. If we don't, the first generation to have ready access to shipwrecks will be the last to enjoy them. In the interest of preserving Minnesota's Lake Superior shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, the State Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society has initiated a program of submerged cultural resource management. The Society hopes you will join its effort to preserve our maritime heritage.

shipwrecks (100000 North American) over four centuries of maritime history and archaeology on the Northern shipwrecks Database. Northern shipwrecks Database
http://www.northernmaritimeresearch.com/wrecks.html
Northern Shipwrecks Database One shipwreck is an event... 100,000 is a maritime history! The Northern Shipwrecks Database is a research database of more than 100,000 North American shipwrecks from the 1500s to 1999 on a searchable self-contained stand-alone CD-ROM.
The distribution of shipwrecks in this research is detailed on this Wrecks by Region page.
Users can retrieve data using either one or a combination of search parameters including: vessel name; year month and date of loss; continent, country, state or province of loss; region and area of loss; official number; port of registry; place built; builder; owners; captain.
The 5 primary screens used to search and present information can be seen on the Sample Screens page.
The advanced search permits users to recall data by: partial name; anniversary month and date; cause of loss; port of origin, destination, cargo, or by position using latitude and longitude coordinates.
A search for data provides the user with a `Summary Screen' of records matching their search parameters. This screen can be scrolled up and down. When the the desired record is located, clicking on the record and then on the `Details' option provides the user with a full-screen record. An on-screen print button permits the user to print the record.
The Wreck Tips provides assistance in locating data. For information not included on this page, send an email for a direct reply.
