Minnesota's Historic Shipwrecks
The cold fresh water of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers have preserved an important part of our history - in shipwrecks! Each one is a unique and integral part of the fabric of America's maritime heritage. Together, they provide physical contact with and offer an exciting opportunity to explore the past. Because they represent a valuable but finite and nonrenewable resource, we must provide for their protection and preservation. If we don't, the first generation to have ready access to shipwrecks will be the last to enjoy them. In the interest of preserving Minnesota's Lake Superior shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, the State Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society has initiated a program of submerged cultural resource management. The Society hopes you will join its effort to preserve our maritime heritage.

GALLOWAY SHIPWRECKS
By Peter C Miller
Published by SUNQUEST ISBN 9519115 3
Over 90 photographs show not only vessels ashore and afloat but depict many aspects related to shipwreck, such as notices of sale, artefacts and original documents. There are accounts of heroism and courage but also, sad to say, some of the more unsavoury incidents, which unfortunately take place when a ship is wrecked.

If an archaeologist claimed to find medieval shipwrecks in forests and cornfields you might well be sceptical. Shipwrecks in the normal course of events are rarely found by farmers. But the plough has become a major archaeological tool in the Netherlands. Many of the ships discovered by farmers in the Netherlands have V-shaped slices out of their sides. It is where the plough has taken a bite just under the surface. More than 400 wrecks have been found like this and more turn up every year. It only made sense to me when I realised that I was on reclaimed land and that the cornfields and forests were about three metres below sea level. I was on the bed of the former Zuider Zee - what was once a large inland sea in the centre of the Netherlands. Since the 1930s the Dutch have systematically created a unique landscape by reclaiming large parts of the sea for farmland. New landscape Whole new provinces have been created by pushing back the water and new towns, industrial areas and much-needed agricultural land has emerged from the sea bed.

WJ held it down on 8/5/02 at 1:11 PM EST. Lost to the Sea: The World of Shipwrecks has returned! After the original site sat stale for almost a year, the site's back with a new layout and some new features. I'll show you around. The bar on the left serves as the navigation. Home takes you back to this page. Shipwrecks takes you to all the shipwrecks that are featured on this site. Clicking the shipwrecks on that page will open a new window up featuring information and images of the ship. You can close the window when you're done viewing it. Site Map gives you a map of the site - if you get lost go there, and it gives all the pages on this site. Site Info is some information about the history of Lost to the Sea. Links takes you to some other great shipwreck oriented websites. Forum takes you to the very first (to my knowledge) forum focused on shipwrecks. Click on guestbook to read entries in my guestbook and enter your own. :) Thanks for coming. I hope you enjoy your stay WJ held it down on 8/4/02 at 5:45 PM EST.

The Underwater Archaeological Preserves
In 1987, Florida began to develop a statewide system of underwater parks featuring shipwrecks and other historic sites. The shipwreck preserves have become popular attractions for skin and scuba diving visitors to witness a part of Florida's history first-hand. They contain not only interesting archaeological features, but also an abundance of marine life that make the parks living museums in the sea. Each site is interpreted by an underwater plaque; a brochure and laminated underwater guides are available from local dive shops. The parks are open to the public year round, free of charge. There are nine parks at present, and several others under development.
Future Preserves
If, in the course of your underwater explorations, you find a site that might be a potential candidate for a new Underwater Archaeological Preserve, you are encouraged to nominate it for consideration. The Bureau of Archaeological Research invites nominations for new underwater preserves throughout the State of Florida, whether located in inland waters, or offshore within Florida's territorial waters. A preserve should have public access, favorable diving conditions, and interesting cultural and natural site features. If selected, a site may then be designated as a preserve through a cooperative project between government and the public. The development of a new park is an excellent opportunity for a diving group to become involved in an underwater project with lasting results.

Inside Angra Bay, Azores islands, Portugal, 2 wrecks have been located in an area where a breakwater is going to be built. The construction is now stopped and, since the 1st of April, a team has been conducting rescue archaeology on both of them. Wrecks have been named Angra C and Angra D.

Angra C is a segment of a ship's hull, measuring 15 meters in length and 6,5 meters wide, maximum, mostly of European white oak. It is heavily treenailed, (circa 1300 trunnels observed at ceiling plank level) and has iron bolts through floors and keel. At the NE end, the ship narrows down to what might be the sternpost. There, in an extension of 5,5 meters long to 75 cm wide, there's a rising wood, notched to receive the floors. Below this deadwood, part of the keel is missing.
