Railways
Taiwan's modern railway system provides frequent and convenient passenger service between all major cities on the island. As of December 2001, Taiwan's railway network totaled 1,097 kilometers, an equivalent of 0.05 kilometers per 10,000 people, or 31 meters per square kilometer of land. This railway system transported 12.4 million tons of freight in 2001, 14.57 percent less than in 2000. The number of passengers carried increased 2.82 percent to a total of 186 million. When Taiwan was returned to the sovereignty of the Republic of China in 1945, its railways were in a desolate state and the majority of its tracks and trains damaged or destroyed because of the Second World War. After initial reconstruction work was completed, the Taiwan railway system underwent a thorough modernization over a period of five decades, and the locomotives were changed from steam diesel to electric. The North Link officially entered service in February 1980, and the South Link was completed in 1992. The complete railway network that is now in place has assumed a significant role in providing inland transportation services for the country's economic development. The Taiwan Railway Administration »OÆWÅK¸ôºÞ²z§½ (TRA) offers four types of passenger train services. The fastest express class is the Zihciang (Tzuchiang) express ¦Û±j¸¹, which only stops at major stations. The next fastest express class, with more frequent stops at lesser, but still large stations, is the Jyuguang (Chukuang) express ²÷¥ú¸¹. The third class of trains, the Fusing (Fuhsing) express ´_¿³¸¹, includes stops at every station on designated commuter routes. Finally, local trains serve mostly long routes, stopping at every station and generally yielding to higher-priority Zihciang, Jyuguang, and Fusing trains.

The biggest submarine in the world - Russian sub "Shark" - is going to be salvaged It was a perfect and unique submarine. Chief designer Kovalev said that the ships equipped with the Typhoon system are able to shake the world. "Shark" proved this with its the results it demonstrated. The submarine has been mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records after it reached the North Pole twice and was able to pass through ice layers several meters thick on its way. It made six autonomous cruises. It was respected by all Russian Northern Fleet. But most of all it was loved by captain-mechanic Alexander Nenashev. He constructed the submarine which was Russian navy's pride and tested it in sea. In December 1999 Nenashev started working in this submarine (the second of "Shark" series subs) as chief captain of its civilian crew. For over three years this crew of high qualified professionals maintained the sub operating capabilities. All the time the captain hoped the submarine whose operating resource had not expired, could be used for civilian purposes. The captain was happy to hear the discussion of the idea of using the submarine as metal ore carrier. Powerful Norilsky Nickel company were thinking of this, but finally rejected the submarine carrier idea as Utopian.

Lithuania Seeks Constructive Solution to Problems of Transportation between Kaliningrad and Rest of Russia
Lithuania is seeking a constructive solution to the transportation problems between the Kaliningrad Region and the rest of Russia. This was announced on Wednesday, December 18, in Kaliningrad at a meeting of Russian and Lithuanian transportation experts.
According to a Rosbalt correspondent, Director of Lithuanian Customs Department Valerionas Valitskas said that there are no particular problems which should arise for the Kaliningrad Region when transporting goods back and for across Lithuania after Lithuania's entry into the EU. However, there are a few questions concerning road and rail transportation and the ecological demands that apply.
'We are willing to cooperate with our Russian colleagues to find mutually acceptable compromises on these questions,' Mr Valitskas said. 'Our only condition is that such agreements are made on equal terms. The suggestions we make to our Russian colleagues will therefore be in Lithuania's interests too,' he explained.
None the less, there are still problems facing international transporters working in the Kaliningrad Region. For example, 90% of the transport park consists of EURO-0 standard vehicles. It will take a considerable amount of time and money to bring it up to date. For this reason, Lithuania may allow the transport park to continue transportation until it its modernisation is complete.

    Historical Data:
People have long used the seas as a means of transportation, as it is often easier to move people and goods over water than land. Following is a list of ship development milestones: The earliest craft were log dugouts, rafts, and boats made of hides stretched over a wooden frame. About 6,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians built reed boats powered by paddlers. About 5,200 years ago, they invented sails. Another breakthrough in sailing technology occurred in 3000 BC when the Egyptians learned to build vessels from wood planks. Around 500 BC the Greeks built ships with two masts. Shipbuilders in northern Europe devised the stern rudder in AD 1303. In the 1450's, shipbuilders in the Mediterranean developed the full-rigged sailing ship. The first workable submarine was constructed from a wooden rowboat covered with waterproof hides in 1620. The first commercial successful steamboat was built in 1807. In 1818, the first all-iron sailing ship was built. A propeller-driven steamship design was patented in 1836.

    Ship transport
Ship transportation is the process of moving people, goods, etc. by barge boat ship or sailboat over a sea ocean lake canal or river . This is frequently undertaken for purposes of commerce recreation or military objectives. The first craft were probably types of canoe s cut out from tree trunks. The colonization of Australia by the Australian aborigines provides indirect but conclusive evidence for the latest date for the inventions of ocean going craft; land bridges linked southeast Asia through most of the Malay Archipelago but a strait had to be crossed to arrive at New Guinea , which was then linked to Australia. Ocean going craft were required for the colonization to happen. Early sea transportation was accomplished with ships that were either rowed or used the wind for propulsion, and often, in earlier times with smaller vessels, a combination of the two. Ship transport was frequently used as a mechanism for conducting warfare. Military use of the seas and waterways is covered in greater detail under navy In the the first steam ships were developed, using a

Updated - Saturday, 3 January, 2004 Reproduced below is the text of Commander Charles C. Gill's semi-official report - approved by transport department head Rear-Admiral Albert Gleaves - detailing the role of the U.S. Navy's transport service during World War One. Click here to read U.S. Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels' official report detailing the build-up and role of the wider U.S. Navy during World War I. Commander Charles C. Gill's Report on the U.S. Navy's Transport Service During Wartime Previous to 1916 the idea of a United States overseas expeditionary force numbered by millions would have been generally regarded as a remote if not impossible contingency. Consequently no extensive peace-time preparations had been made for such an undertaking. The task of providing a transport fleet was, therefore, a pioneer work. Ships had to be obtained, officers and crews enrolled and trained. It was necessary to provide docks, storehouses, lighters and tugs, coaling equipment, repair facilities, and all the varied machinery for operating and maintaining a large transportation service. An efficient administrative organization had to be developed.
