USS Cuttlefish (Submarine # 11, later SS-11), 1907-1922. Renamed B-2 in 1911
USS Cuttlefish , a 145-ton Viper class submarine built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in October 1907. For the next three years she was employed on test and training duties along the U.S. East Coast. In May 1911 Cuttlefish joined the Reserve Torpedo Group, based at Charleston, South Carolina. She was renamed B-2 in November of that year. In November 1912 the submarine was loaded on board the collier Ajax for transportation to the Philippines. She arrived in Manila Bay in late April and, following reconditioning, was commissioned for Asiatic Fleet service in early August 1913. B-2 remained in the Philippines for the rest of her career and was decommissioned in December 1919. In July 1920 she was given the hull number SS-11 and two months later was assigned to target duty. USS B-2 was stricken from the Navy list in January 1922.

Hull classification symbol
The United States Navy uses hull classification symbols to identify the types of its ships. See also pennant number, a somewhat analogous system used by the Royal Navy and some European navies. The combination of symbol and hull number identify a modern Navy ship uniquely. A heavily modified or repurposed ship may receive a new symbol, and either retain the hull number or receive a new one. Also, the system of symbols has changed a number of times since it was introduced in , so ships' symbols sometimes change without anything being done to the physical ship. Many of these symbols are not presently in use. Table of contents 1 Warships

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition A ship , like a boat A boat , like a ship, is a buoyant vessel designed for the purpose of transporting people and possibly goods across water. A boat is usually smaller than a ship. Some boats are commonly carried by a ship or on land using trailers. A boat consists of one or more buoyancy structures called hulls and some system of propulsion, such as, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail or a motor.

They are most often man-made (automobiles, motorcycles, trains, ships, aircraft), but also non-man-made means for transportations can be called vehicles, including icebergs and floating tree trunks. Animals, though used as means for transportation, are not called vehicles. This includes humans carrying another human, for example a child or a disabled person. Forms of transportation without vehicle or animal are walking, running, crawling, swimming and (for certain animals) flying.

THE SUEZ MARU supplied to COFEPOW by Dennis Courant Early 1942 In early 1942 Japanese Emperor Hirohito decrees the establishment of the Prisoners of War Bureau. One of its tasks is to record the death of Allied Prisoners of War and to adopt a policy to ensure that by the end of hostilities all Allied Prisoners of War and internees will be eliminated. Japanese Imperial Headquarters issues orders to all Pacific Commands that under no circumstances will Prisoners of War be allowed to fall into enemy hands. Mid January 1943 April 1943 A large group of about 4000 British and Dutch POWs are shipped from Surabaya to the Island of Ambon (Camps: Liang, Ambon City, Rumah Tiga, Wyame and Laha), the Island of Ceram (Camp Amahei) and the Island of Haruku (Palao Camp) to be used as slave labour in the construction and expansion of airfields. Some 2000 more are shipped to the Island of Flores (Camps: Wulff, Reyers, Blom and Talibura). Smaller groups are shipped to the Islands of Buton (Camp Raha) and Timor (Camp Kupang). The POWs came from different camps in Java and were divided into 3 groups, all with letter designations indicating their camp of origin. The larger groups were assigned capital letters A, B and C whilst the smaller sub-groups were indicated by lower case letters a, b and c.

The Eleventh Meeting of the Committee on Transport and Communications (COTAC) was held in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, on 1-3 September 1982 and the Twelfth Meeting in Johore Baharu, Malaysia, on 12-14 April 1983. In addition, a special meeting of COTAC was held in Singapore on 8-9 November 1982, immediately preceding the Fourteenth AEM Meeting, to take up urgent matters in the field of civil aviation.
1982-1983 saw the emergence of various international issues, especially in civil aviation, which further underlined the need for joint ASEAN approaches to such issues. ASEAN's resolve in these areas has enhanced both its internal cohesion and its international standing.
Integrated Work Programmes (IWP) were formulated by each relevant COTAC Sub-Committee in the areas of Land Transportation, Post and Telecommunications and Civil Aviation and Related Services by the end of 1982. These follow the pattern of the Integrated Work Programme on Shipping, (IWPS) with priority areas identified and implemented over a specific time frame. The various Work Programmes were consolidated into an ASEAN Integrated Work Programme in Transportation and Communication (IWPTC) covering the period 1982-1986. As of May 1983, only twelve of COTAC's previous list of projects had not been incorporated into any specific IWP. These are projects which involve more than one mode of transport.

Military Sealift Command Ships of the Line By Salvatore R. Mercogliano In 1973, with the withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam , the last two troop transports - the third arm of the early military sealift triad, the other two being freighters and tankers - were removed from active service, ending the regularly scheduled operations of these ships. This event marked the true transition point from Military Sea Transportation Service to the modern Military Sealift Command. The initial fleet of troopers consisted of a mixture of several different classes but three primary ones emerged: the C-4 General-class, and the larger and more prestigious, hence better paying, P-2 Admiral and General-classes. C-4 Troopships The C-4s had a long and varied service with MSTS. Initially conceived as a vehicle carrier, similar to the successful Seatrain type vessels, the urgent need to deploy troops overseas and concerns over losses to the ships due to lack of adequate watertight protection, led to their conversion into troop transports. At 532 feet in length, and 12,420 gross tons, they were some of the largest vessels built by the Maritime Commission during the Second World War. They could accommodate 228 officers, 3,595 men, and 6,840 tons of cargo, with a cruising speed of 17 knots. Unlike Navy Attack Transports, troopers lacked the watercraft necessary to transfer their charges ashore and were intended for use in point-to-point operations. Both the Army and the War Shipping Administration utilized this class of ship and when the Army Transport Service was transferred to MSTS in March 1950, 23 C-4s were redesignated as United States Naval Ships, with 6 others reactivated for the Korean War.

French nuclear sub among attractions at the Review
Josy Joseph in Bombay Bonhomie, sympathy and some bewilderment along with that unavoidable, alluring Indianness were on display as naval ships from around the globe continued to sail into Bombay on Thursday for the International Fleet Review. Several were the attractions of the ships that sailed in. If one was a nuclear submarine, rarely seen in Indian waters, another was a ship coming straight from the Persian Gulf after enforcing the United Nations sanctions against Iraq. Some ships even brought relief material for victims of the Gujarat earthquake. And among the sailors, there was also an unavoidable sign of the growing Indian influence: A turban-wearing India-born Sikh commanding a Singapore naval ship. At last count there were 23 foreign ships and a nuclear submarine anchored off Bombay. Most exciting of Thursday's arrivals was the Perle , a Rubis Amethyste class nuclear-powered submarine of the French Navy. It has a displacement of 2410 tons and carries Exocet missiles in its armoury.

This section covers Research Vessels ( R/Vs ), Remotely Operated Vehicles ( ROVs ), Deep Submersible Vehicles ( DSVs ), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles ( AUVs ) and Sonar . The deep submersible, Alvin will be off the Oregon coast most all the summer of 2000. Sonar is getting sophisticated but the basic concept is simple. A "ping" is generated and the time it takes for it to return determines the object's distance. Single beam sonar is now being replaced by multi-beam systems. By "pinging" 100 beams simultaneously, a wide swath can be measured. The data can then be rendered as 3-D computerized maps (bathemetry). CNN explains Today's well-equipped Research Vessel might include sub-bottom profilers that use air guns for seismic profiling, magnetic anomaly detection, 3-D contour mapping using multi-beam sonar, side-looking sonar for imagery that resembles photographs, doppler current profilers, bottom transponders for deep sea ROV navigation, ocean bottom hydrophones and many more.
