West Nile Virus What is West Nile Virus? The West Nile Virus is primarily a disease of birds. It is commonly found in Africa, West Asia, and the Middle East, but has also caused outbreaks in Europe. In humans, it can cause encephalitis, an infection of the brain. West Nile Virus is similar to the virus that causes St. Louis encephalitis, which for years has been found in the United States. West Nile had not been found in the United States before the late summer of 1999. What are the Symptoms of West Nile Virus? Most people infected by the West Nile Virus have no symptoms at all, or experience something that feels like flu. Symptoms of “West Nile fever” may include fever, headache, achy muscles, and extreme tiredness, perhaps with skin rash and swollen lymph glands. In a fraction of cases, the fever leads to encephalitis, which is fatal in some cases or may cause neurologic after-effects. There is no vaccine against West Nile, and no known “cure.” As with other viral diseases, treatment consists of support until it has run its course. By the mid-1930s, cigarette advertisements targeting women were becoming so commonplace that one advertisement for the mentholated Spud brand had the caption "To read the advertisements these days, a fellow'd think the pretty girls do all the smoking." As early as the 1920s, tobacco advertising geared toward women included messages such as "Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet" to establish an association between smoking and slimness. The positioning of Lucky Strike as an aid to weight control led to a greater than 300% increase in sales for this brand in the first year of the advertising campaign. Through World War II, Chesterfield advertisements regularly featured glamour photographs of a Chesterfield girl of the month, usually a fashion model or a Hollywood star such as Rita Hayworth, Rosalind Russell, or Betty Grable. The number of women aged 18 through 25 years who began smoking increased significantly in the mid-1920s, the same time that the tobacco industry mounted the Chesterfield and Lucky Strike campaigns directed at women. Species Identification: Figure 2: California Slender Salamander (Batrachoseps attenuatus) One of the most familiar salamanders of western USA California Slender Salamander - (B.attenuatus) 7 - 12cm. 17 - 22 costal grooves. The most abundant species, now known to be the common salamander of the west (a title formerly given to Aneides lugubris ).. In recent studies it is estimated that there may be as many as 8 specimens per square metre within its range. The dorsum, which is a rusty-red or more usually sandy brown, is very elongate and is flanked by dark brown or black sides and limbs. A series of v-shaped marking often traverses the entire dorsum. The belly is brown-black with small white speckles. Range - from extreme southwest Oregon, along the whole California coast except the Monterey peninsular and extreme south. Also found in the lower foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. A relict population even exists on the infamous island of Alcatraz although this is thought to be in decline due to old age and excessive in-breeding. Desert Slender Salamander - (B aridus) 5.5 - 9cm. 16 - 20 costal grooves. One of the smallest, most attractive Batrachoseps. The dorsum is black with a beautiful maroon tint, while the snout, flanks and tail sides are flecked with silver. The belly is a black-maroon. The tails is rather more laterally compressed than in other species. Range - A species classified as endangered on account of its very limited distribution - a single canyon in Riverside County, California. I actually found that it was extremely abundant within certain areas of the canyon possibly because there were very few natural predators present.

Dementia A deterioration of intellectual function and other cognitive skills, leading to a decline in the ability to perform activities of daily living. The use of clinician must differentiate dementia from benign senescent forgetfulness (ie, age-related memory loss), which results from the slowing of neural processes with age. ( see page 380 ) Persons with benign senescent forgetfulness learn new information and recall previously learned information more slowly. However, if they are given extra time and encouragement, their intellectual performance is essentially unchanged from their baseline. Daily functioning remains unaffected. Persons with this condition are often more concerned about it than are family members; reassurance and coping strategies are helpful. Etiology The causes of dementia ( see Table 40-1 ) are difficult to differentiate because they are imprecise; many cases can be confirmed only by postmortem pathologic examination, which is usually not performed. Moreover, mixed dementias may be common (eg, recent research shows an interplay between Alzheimer's and cerebrovascular diseases). Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementias are probably the two most common types, accounting for up to 90% of cases of established dementia in about a 2:1 ratio.
