Sheep Tail Length
Author: Dr. S. John Martin - Veterinary Scientist, Sheep, Goat and Swine/OMAF Creation Date: 1 June 1999 Last Reviewed: 1 June 1999 Again the argument on the length of the tail dock in sheep has surfaced. The tail has many functions; the tail at the full length in the ewe, will protect the udder from chilling. A Scottish Blackface on the hill retains all the tail, because the shepherd knows that in the extreme conditions that the ewe will be raising her lamb, the udder needs protection to prevent chilling and possible mastitis. Very often, when a sheep is defecating, it will shake the tail to spread the fecal pellets. But what happens if the tail is left long on our lush pastures. Soft feces collect under the tail, making an ideal site for fly strike. Flies lay eggs in and around the fecal mass, hatching into maggots which will attack the flesh under the tails, even entering the rectum and vagina. A lamb with fly strike is not a pretty sight and will almost certainly die.

Pneumonia in Sheep
Author: Dr. S. John Martin - Veterinary Scientist, Sheep, Goat and Swine/OMAF Creation Date: 1 June 1999 Last Reviewed: 1 June 1999 Pneumonia outbreaks are rarely simple, especially in a group of lambs. The actual infecting agent could be one of a number of bacteria, a mycoplasma or a virus. Many of these organisms are commonly found in the respiratory tract of healthy lambs where they cause no trouble that is until some predisposing factor stresses the respiratory system. The stressor could be the collection of a group of lambs from grass to a dusty yard for shipping, poor ventilation in a barn, build up of ammonia from a manure pack in a building, high humidity, overcrowding or any combination of these. The clinical signs will vary with the severity. Early in an outbreak you may realize that there is more coughing in the group than previously; when moving the lambs some may lag behind and be breathing hard. There can be very sick animals which require individual treatments; there may be some deaths. In one New Zealand report of a pneumonia outbreak, 2-3 days after driving 850 lambs from pasture to a dusty collecting yard, 24 were dead; another 12 died in the next two weeks. There were sporadic cases of pneumonia in the survivors every time that they were handled.

About the
National Livestock Producers Association
The NLPA Sheep and Goat Fund is a revolving fund established within NLPA to assist the U.S. sheep and goat industries by strengthening and enhancing the production and marketing of sheep and goats and their products in the United States. The Fund is the result of a joint effort of the National Sheep Industry Improvement Center (NSIIC) and the National Livestock Producers Association (NLPA). The NSIIC made funds available to NLPA, which serves as an Intermediary and established the Sheep and Goat Fund. NLPA has the ability to service and administer this important program and was selected for their ability to provide:
  • expertise with livestock production, processing and marketing-related lending; nationwide capability in urban and rural areas; and the ability to process and service loans from all segments of the sheep and goat industries; from production through the packer/processor/retail level.

Livestock health
Pulpy kidney in sheep and goats
Revised by Deborah Maxwell and Geoff Knights, Agency for Food and Fibre Sciences
Key points
  • Pulpy kidney is a common disease affecting young sheep and goats and causes sudden deaths.
  • An effective vaccine is available and is strongly recommended in areas where the disease is known to occur.
Introduction
Pulpy kidney (also called enterotoxaemia) is a fatal disease affecting sheep and goats in Queensland. It occurs more frequently in young animals in good seasons.
Cause
Pulpy kidney is caused by the bacteria Clostridium perfringens (welchii) Type D. The bacterium multiplies in the intestines, and produces a toxin that is absorbed into the blood. These bacteria are normally present in low numbers. However, they multiply rapidly when highly nutritious food is in the intestines and/or when food movement along the intestines slows down or stops temporarily. This results in the production of high levels of toxins that are frequently fatal. These conditions can occur when lambs are grazing very lush pastures. Those lambs with higher intakes are most susceptible. It also occurs when there has been a sudden introduction of, or an increase in grain in the diet.

Urinary Calculi in Growing Lambs
Author: Brian Bell - Agriculture and Rural Representative/OMAF Creation Date: 1 October 1997 Last Reviewed: 1 October 1997 Several producers creep feed their lambs. It is during this period that the incidence of urinary calculi increases. Urinary calculi or "urolithiasis" affects young rams fed on rations with a high grain proportion. Tiny crystals form in the urine under certain dietary conditions. The crystals are carried along in the urine flow and block the urethra. Severe blockages cause the bladder to distend and possibly rupture. If rupture occurs, the ram lamb will probably die. Calculi development is related to the intake of magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Quick fixes include:

Livestock health
Tetanus in sheep and goats
Ross Newman, Animal and Plant Health Service
Key points
  • Tetanus is a common, highly fatal disease in sheep and goats caused by a widespread bacterium.
  • Infection can be effectively and cheaply prevented through vaccination and good hygiene.
Infection
Tetanus is caused by spores of the bacteria Clostridium tetani . The spores have some important characteristics:
  • common in soil and faeces, remaining infectious for years
  • produce a potent toxin in a suitable, localised wound
  • not destroyed by most common disinfectants.
Infection normally occurs from a wound contaminated by dirt, dust or faeces. Castration, ear-marking, tail-docking, mulesing, dehorning and debudding are all routine surgical procedures creating wounds that can be ideal growth sites for tetanus. Infection can also occur through non-surgical wounds eg dog bites, shearing cuts. The incubation period is usually between three days and three weeks. In this period, the organism multiplies and produces its lethal toxin. The toxin penetrates the nerves around the wound and travels to the spinal cord and brain where it fixes to nerve cells to produce exaggerated and uncontrollable muscle spasms.

    Introduction
The Sheep Flock Improvement Program (SFIP) is a home test genetic improvement program designed to assist Ontario purebred and commercial sheep producers in the evaluation of potential breeding stock and to provide a measure of the comparative productivity of ewes in the flock. The SFIP program provides information that producers can use to improve the genetic merit of their flock and monitor performance, and maintains a large database of the performance records of tested sheep breeds in the province. The performance of an animal that you see and measure is a result of both the genetics of the animal and the animals' environment. For example, animals with exactly the same genetics will perform differently if they are fed differently and animals that are fed exactly the same will perform differently due to genetics.

Producers interested in performance now have the tools that will allow them to make genetic improvements more reliably than in the past. The new genetic evaluations are now available for lambs as they are tested on the Sheep Flock Improvement Program (SFIP). Canada is a world leader for genetic improvement in the dairy and swine industries. Now a similar evaluation system is available for sheep producers. Enrolled producers will receive across flock evaluations for weight gain traits, milking and mothering ability to weaning and number born and reared to weaning.

Not less than four weeks before the due date of the first ewe, all the ewes should receive a booster vaccination against the clostridial group of diseases, (all first lamb ewes should have completed the primary vaccination course before breeding) and an injection of Vitamin E/selenium. If they are not to be sheared, they should at least be crutched to remove excess wool from the udder area.
