Preventing Pasture Bloat in Sheep
This article first appeared in The Working Border Collie, Inc. Jan/Feb in 1997 by Mike Neary
Extension Sheep Specialist
Purdue University Bloat can be a sudden and lethal occurrence for sheep. Often, unless the livestock is being monitored closely, the first symptom one notices is dead or distressed animals. Pasture bloat (or green legume bloat) is caused by increased pressure by the ruminal contents. Pasture bloat is usually a build-up of trapped gas caused by the failure of the animal to undergo normal eructation. Gas production in the rumen normally consists of primarily CO and CH produced through feedstuff fermentation. Under normal conditions, ruminants have a predictable sequence of eructation cycles, whereby, gas that is produced is released to the environment. When an animal is experiencing pasture bloat, ruminal conditions are such that a stable froth is produced in the rumen. This froth then "layers" on top of the ruminal contents (mostly liquid) and prevents the gas bubbles from rising to the top and dispersing their contents. This could be analogous to taking a drinking straw and blowing air into a glass of liquids and seeing the air bubbles rise to the top and bursting. Under pasture bloat conditions, the bubbles cannot burst, thus, a build-up of gas and pressure. Furthermore, the froth produced in a bloat situation can block the cardia and prevent normal eructation and release of gas through the esophagus.

Embryo transfer techniques allow top quality females to have a greater influence on the genetic advancement of a herd or flock in much the same way that artificial insemination has allowed greater use of superior sires. Continuing improvements to techniques mean the advancement of artificial breeding can be gained by virtually any livestock breeder - stud or commercial. Brecon Breeders will readily provide expert advice on the best ways to use artificial breeding in specific situations. In most cases, artificial breeding programs can be carried out either on-farm or at the company's South Australian headquarters. Detailed instructions on the preparation of animals for such programs are available.

    Introduction
Johne's disease (pronounced yonee's) is a disease of ruminants characterized by wasting and terminally, by diarrhea. It is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis . Johne's disease has been reported in Canada in cattle for several decades. Although it has also been reported in sheep for many years, no one is certain of how widespread it is or exactly how much damage it is doing to our sheep industry.
    World-Wide Distribution
Johne's disease has been diagnosed in cattle (both dairy and beef), goats, deer (fallow, red deer, white tail deer and many other species both wild and farmed), llamas, camels, other wild ruminants (moose, Rocky Mountain goats, bison, antelope, big-horn sheep) as well as sheep. The disease in sheep has been reported across North America and Europe (including Iceland). It has been a major infectious disease of sheep in New Zealand for some years but has only invaded Australia in the last decade, where it appears to be spreading rapidly. Reports of experimental infection of non-ruminant species such as mice and rabbits has led to speculation that there could be non-ruminant reservoirs of disease, particularly in the United Kingdom (UK) rabbit population.

    79. Something's Been Killing My Sheep - But What?
The purpose of this factsheet is to aid producers and livestock evaluators in distinguishing between losses caused by predators and nonpredator causes. If predation is the cause of death then it is particularly important to identify the species responsible so additional control measures can be implemented to minimize future losses. Heavy emphasis is placed on distinguishing between coyote predation and dog predation, since they collectively account for almost all predator related losses in Ontario flocks.

The range and extent of predation on Ontario sheep has escalated at an alarming rate to the point where it threatens the viability of many operations. Producers lost almost three times the number of sheep and lambs in 1995 (3,060) as they lost in 1986 (1,149). During the four year period from 1991 to 1994 the sheep industry was compensated an average of $388,000/year for predation losses, under the Livestock, Poultry and Honeybee Protection Act

    History
One of the most significant human-induced changes affecting the biota of the Colorado Plateau has been the widespread introduction of domestic livestock. Brought to the Southwest by the Spanish in the late 1500s, cattle and sheep only began to have a significant impact on the region's biota with their large scale transportation into the region with the arrival of the railroads pine forests , on grasslands , and along riparian corridors Cattle Drive in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Photo © 1998 Ray Wheeler By the time federal forest reserves were proclaimed in the 1890s, ranchers on the Colorado Plateau had become accustomed to unregulated use of public lands as range for livestock. As a result of these excessive stocking numbers, once rich grasslands were seriously degraded even before the turn of the century, after less than a human generation of use. By the early 1900s, overstocking of sheep on many middle-elevation mesas and in the area's
