    Introduction
The range and extent of predation on Ontario sheep has increased to the point where it threatens the viability of many operations. Producers lost almost three times the number of sheep and lambs in 1995 (3,060) as they lost in 1986 (1,149). During the four year period from 1991 to 1994 the sheep industry was compensated an average of $388,000/year under the Livestock, Poultry and Honeybee Protection Act

Support the viability and diversity of rural and urban economies and communities. Enable viable livelihoods to be made from sustainable land management, both through the market and through payments for public benefits. Respect and operate within the biological limits of natural resources (especially soil, water and biodiversity). Achieve consistently high standards of environmental performance by reducing energy consumption and by minimising resource inputs, and use renewable energy wherever possible. Ensure a safe and hygienic working environment and high social welfare and training for all employees involved in the food chain.

    33. Rift Valley Fever - A Disease That Can Spread With The Wind
A mosquitoborne virual disease leading to serious economic losses in livestock, particularly sheep. Transmission, symptoms, related links.
    http://www.fao.org/NEWS/1998/rvf-e.htm
Rift Valley fever - a disease that can spread with the wind Rift Valley fever (RVF) - one of the priority diseases identified for attention by FAO's Emergency Prevention System ( EMPRES ) - is a mosquito-borne virus disease affecting ruminant animals and humans. It can cause very serious economic losses in livestock, particularly sheep. Goats, cattle, camels, Asian water buffaloes and possibly some wild antelopes are also susceptible. RVF was first described in the Rift Valley of Kenya in the early 1930s but it is now endemic in restricted sites throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. Epidemics of the disease typically occur in cycles of five to 20 years. Recent major outbreaks hit Egypt in the late 1970s and Senegal and Mauritania in 1987. Because mosquitoes are easily carried long distances by wind, RVF has the potential to spread rapidly to new countries and even to new continents. The first sign of an epidemic of RVF is normally numerous abortions by pregnant sheep. An exceptionally high mortality rate in new-born sheep and goats is typical, with 90 percent of lambs and kids dying after showing little more than fever, lack of appetite and weakness. In older animals, the illness can also cause vomiting, blood-stained discharge from the nose, diarrhoea and jaundice. Older animals and cattle generally recover.

Reviewed by S.D. Musgrave and G.W. Thrasher. Summary Introduction Vision and Livestock Motion Livestock have wide angle vision. Cattle and pigs have a visual field in excess of 300 degrees (75). In sheep, the visual field ranges from 191 to 306 degrees depending on the amount of wool on the head. Loading ramps and handling chutes should have solid side walls to prevent animals from seeing distractions outside the chute with their wide angle vision (22, 24, 79). Moving objects and people seen through the sides of a chute can cause balking or frighten livestock. Solid side walls are especially important if animals are not completely tame or they are unaccustomed to the facility. Blocking vision will stop escape attempts. This is why a solid portable panel is so effective for handling pigs. Sight restriction will lower stress levels (13, 39). The wildest cow will remain calm in a darkened artificial insemination box which completely blocks vision (70, 86). Even though ruminant animals have depth perception, their ability to perceive depth at ground level while moving with their heads up is probably poor (59). Hutson (50) suggests that there may be an extensive blind area at ground level and moving livestock may not be able to use motion parallax or retinal disparity cues to perceive depth. To see depth on the ground, the animal would have to stop and lower its head. This may explain why livestock often lower their heads and stop to look at strange things on the ground. Cattle, pigs, sheep and horses will often balk and refuse to walk over a drain grate, hose, puddle, shadow or change in flooring surface or texture (22, 24, 62).
