Sharks in Australian Waters
Sharks ( elasmobranchs ) comprise about 1% of all living fishes, and share nearly all the major features of their finned relatives. Like all fishes sharks use gills to extract oxygen from the water in which they live. Sharks have five to seven gill openings along each side of the head, through which they breathe. Primarily marine fishes, a few have adapted to fresh water, such as the Northern River Shark and Speartooth Sharks (Glyphis sp A and C respectively) found in the Northern Territory of Australia. About 350 species of sharks occur worldwide. Sharks are primarily oceanic and are widespread in tropical to temperate zones. Sharks vary greatly in size. The largest species, also the largest of all fishes, is the plankton eating giant the Whale Shark ( Rhincodon typus ). The largest measured specimen was 12.65 m long and weighed 21.5 tonnes, but the Whale Shark probably attains 18 metres. Some of the deepwater shark species attain only about 25cm.

Freshwater Angling Whale Shark ( Rhincodon typus Western Australia is privileged to be the only place in the world known to be visited by the mysterious whale shark ( Rhincodon typus ) on a regular basis. Each year, just days after the mass spawning of corals on the Ningaloo Reef (near Exmouth) in March and April, whale sharks appear in the waters along the front of the reef, remaining for up to a month. It is thought that they come to feed on an explosion of marine life that feeds on the coral spawn. Most of these visiting whale sharks are immature males. It remains an intriguing puzzle why this particular section of the population visits our coast. Whale sharks will grow to over 12 metres in length, which is about the size of a large bus. These gentle ocean giants are often confused with whales because of their large size and feeding habits. They are, however, sharks, albeit the least fearsome of this group, and their closest relatives are the nurse and wobbegong sharks. Whale sharks are not aggressive, and like the second largest of all sharks - the slightly smaller basking shark - cruise the oceans feeding on concentrations of zooplankton, small fish and squid. The whale shark's mouth contains 300 rows of tiny teeth, but ironically, they neither chew nor bite their food.

Introduction
Sharks are a valuable part of marine ecosystems and NOAA Fisheries is committed to conserving shark populations. Most sharks are vulnerable to overfishing because they are long-lived, take many years to mature, and only have a few young at a time. Recovery from overfishing can take years or decades for many shark species. Therefore, sharks need conservation and NOAA Fisheries is conducting research, implementing restrictions and working with fisherman domestically, and pursuing international conservation. These steps will ensure that those shark populations that are healthy remain so and those shark populations that are overfished recover. It's The Ocean, Not A Swimming Pool

Sharks attack three off Florida's east coast
Girl bitten by shark while surfing receives aid for her wounds. DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (CNN) Sharks attacked three surfers off Florida's upper east coast Sunday, a few miles from where three men were bitten the previous day. The day's first attack occurred about 11:30 a.m. EDT when a shark bit the foot of a 17-year-old girl about 100 yards off the beach at Wilbur-By-The-Sea south of Daytona Beach, said Joe Wooden, deputy chief of the Daytona Beach Patrol. Wooden said the victim, whose name was not released, was bitten as she was riding a surfboard; she was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she was treated and released. "She caught a wave, she came off her board, she was going to say something to me, and she screamed and she started yelling," said Scott Love, the girl's boyfriend. "I jumped off my board, threw it to shore and went to her." Sharks over the Years have had a bad rap for being blood thirsty creatures that will attack and kill anything in their path. Movies like Jaws and Shark Attack are big contributors to this. However , with a little reasearch you will find out that Sharks are not what most people might think. Shark attacks that accur are for the most part a mistaken identity by the shark ... it thinks you are a seal or one of its natural prey. Or if a shark is teased it will become aggressive and may attack. Its been shown that when people are at the beach swimming , there are sharks around ... but the fact is they just dont care. If they were these blood thirsty creatures there made out to be , there would be fatal attacks every day. Sharks are one of the most Interesting creatures on this planet. Also for something not as big , shark teeth are just as good which include modern shark teeth of Great White shark, mako shark, tiger shark , white shark teeth and more. Plus Fossil shark teeth of Extinct sharks like the Biggest Shark to ever Live the Megalodon Shark. Having a Shark Tooth of a Megalodon is a Must for any Shark Fan! The Topic sharks. Easier inches. Harder sharks are found in all types of oceans including the arctic, but most are found in warm seas.
http://eduscapes.com/42explore/shark.htm
The Topic:
Sharks Easier - Most people think of a shark as being a large, ferocious fish that has sharp teeth and feeds on meat. But in truth a shark can be one of over 370 different types and range in size from the whale shark, the largest of all fish that measure up to forty feet long, to the smallest shark, the spined pygmy shark that only grow to a length of about six inches. Harder - Sharks are found in all types of oceans including the arctic, but most are found in warm seas. Some prefer the spacious ocean depths, others are found in coastal waters, a few enter rivers and lakes that empty into the sea, and one species found in India and Pakistan lives only in freshwater rivers. Sharks are different from most other kinds of fish. They have a unique boneless skeleton that is composed of tough, elastic cartilage. Most sharks have a rounded tough-skinned, streamlined shaped body, somewhat like a torpedo. This helps them to swim. Unlike most fish, sharks do not have a swim bladder. Instead their oversized liver is filled with an oil that is lighter-weight than water. This also aids their swimming ability. Even so, most sharks must constantly swim or their body would sink.

GASP! Gulf Area Sea Paddlers
What About Those Sharks?
A lot of questions have come up about sea kayaking and sharks. Much data and information has been gathered through years of studying sharks and shark attacks. The purpose of this section is to provide information on the habits of different shark species, many of which are considered an "endangered species." The fact is that it is an extremely rare occasion a paddler will ever see a shark (seldom enough even for divers). They are quite afraid of us and with good reason. So if you do come upon one of these magnificent creatures of the sea, rather than be fearful, be respectful and consider yourself to be among a very lucky and very small group of witnesses. And tell us about it!
  • The One That Let Us Get Away A write-up about a white shark encounter by two kayakers, Mike Chin and paddling buddy, Ken Kelton, at Ano Nuevo on the North California coast in 1992 as told by Mike Chin who witnessed the attack of a great white shark on his friend's kayak.
  • The Center for Shark Research - Mote Marine Laboratory Dr. Rober E. Hueter, Director. Great site with lots of information on different shark species, shark myths (very cleverly done), tagging, and sharks and cancer, etc.

Sharks: Top Predators with a Purpose! The Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish on Earth, possibly reaching 60 feet in length, or about as long as two school buses! This whale shark has a remora riding on it's head. (The remora is a kind of fish that acts like a suction cup, attaching to larger animals to get a free ride). Check out a video clip of a whale shark (2 minutes in length, 4 Mb file size, requires a quicktime viewer).
The shark is a fascinating creature, surrounded by myth and misconception. To many, sharks symbolize the very essence of ruthlessness, representing the ultimate savages of the natural world. Though many people would rather not intentionally socialize with these fearsome predators of the depths, I find it thoroughly captivating to swim among sharks. Sharks and their direct predecessors have been swimming in the world's oceans for well over 300 million years, and were going about their business long before dinosaurs walked the Earth. The fact that sharks have survived for so long without changing very much is a real tribute to the effectiveness of their anatomy. Sharks are fishes, contained within the taxonomic class called Chondrichthyes (meaning "cartilage-fish"). Sharks and other cartilaginous fishes (rays, skates, and ratfishes) differ from the bony fishes in that they have a cartilaginous skeleton, and lack a swim bladder. This class of fishes contains over 600 species worldwide, including over 300 species of sharks.
