School of sharks seen off Florida coast
One of dozens of sharks taped swimming off the Florida coast this week SARASOTA, Florida (CNN) Dozens of sharks were spotted swimming in shallow water near the shore of Siesta Key on Thursday. The latest sighting came just two days after a similar school was captured on videotape farther north. It was not known what type of sharks were gathered nor whether they posed a danger to swimmers or boaters. "It's too early for us to know any of that," said Sue Ellen Richardson, spokeswoman for The Florida Aquarium in Tampa. VIDEO For the second time this week, an unusually large school of sharks was seen in shallow Florida waters. CNN's Joie Chen talks reports (August 16) Play video (QuickTime, Real or Windows Media) Tuesday, hundreds of sharks were videotaped in shallow waters off Anclote Key, north of Tampa. Sharks frequent the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and scientists said such large numbers are not unusual. Still, the large school had prompted authorities to alert swimmers and fishermen Tuesday to possible danger. RELATED STORIES: Hundreds of sharks spotted off Florida August 15, 2001

MARINE WILDLIFE
American Alligator ... Make a Difference SHARKS
Factoid #1: Sharks can find prey by following the electrical impulses that animals emit, and some species of shark can smell a drop of blood in one million drops of seawater.
Factoid #2: Sharks have an unlimited supply of teeth that are set in layered rows in the gums. If one tooth falls out, a tooth from another layer takes its place. A shark may shed as many as 50,000 teeth in its lifetime. This is one reason why prehistoric shark teeth are the most commonly found fossils.
Status: Unknown, but in general, species are declining.
Population: The worldwide population of each species of shark is unknown.
Threats: Shark populations in many areas have declined from excessive fishing and unintentional catching in fishnets. Survival: Scientists often examine animal teeth to determine age, but this technique isn't possible with sharks because they go through so many teeth during their lives. This makes determining the age of a shark difficult, so the lifespan of sharks isn't known. There are at least 350 species of shark ranging from the smallest, the pygmy ribbontail catshark (8 to 10 inches long) to the largest, the whale shark (upto 45 feet long).

Great white shark
T
he great white shark (carharodon carharias) is the third largest shark species (next to whale shark and bashing shark that actually are two separate breeds). It appears in weights of 1,5 tons. The records lies on 3, 312 tons(1948). While the smaller male can be 5 m long, the female can be as long as 8 m. The longest great white shark was caught in 1835 and was 13,1 m long. You could say that the great white shark exists in all fairly hot waters in both coastal and deep sea areas where suitable food is to be found. In Australia, outside Victoria, the most sharks is counted in april and july, when they are fished by anglers. In the USA the most great white sharks is to be seen outside the coast of New England, and also during the mating season of the sea elephants (november) in the waters of California. The great white sharks is considered a threat against man since they attack and hurt or kill people every once in a while.
Lemon shark
L
emon sharks is possible to spot only in american coastal waters (both in north- and south america). The lemon shark stays where the water is deep during the day to head towards the shore water to find attractive prey like rays and crabs after twillight has set. They can reach a length of 3 m as grown ups. A female can have up to 19 kids in a batch. However, lemon sharks do not reach sexual maturity until 12 years of age. Like many other sharks, the teeth of the lemon shark is in constant renewal. New teeth is in the back of the mouth and they are moved forward in succession in what way a whole rug of teeth is in use. The teeth of an active lemon shark can be changed as often as once a week. Lemon sharks is grey-brown but with strain of yellow. The yellow nuance has given this shark species its name.

Welcome to my underwater world of sharks. Sharks are the most feared creatures under the sea -mostly due to movies like Jaws . Even with the perception that sharks are vicious creatures, "Today, as never before, sharks and their relatives, the skates and rays, are facing an increasing threat from humans. On average there is one Australian killed by a shark each year. By contrast 23,000 tonnes (or 25,376 US tons) of sharks, skates and rays are killed through commercial and recreational fishing and shark-control programs." (Quote from Dr John Stevens, Marine Scientist) Sharks come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. A shark can be as large as 21 tonnes (23 US tons) and 18 meters (59 feet) or as small as 25 cm (~10 inches). The most popular sharks are the great whites or tiger sharks. There are angel sharks, black-tail reef sharks, blacktip sharks, broad-nose seven gill sharks, cookie-cutter sharks, graceful sharks, hammerhead sharks, strawberry smoothhound sharks, and whale sharks, just to name a few. Sharks are the only fish that have cartilage instead of bones. Cartilage is more flexible, therefore, sharks can turn sharper corners than other fish. Cartilage is continually being replaced and mineral deposits are in their jaws which results in stronger teeth. Shark's teeth are normally replaced every eight days. An average shark goes through 30,000 teeth in their lifetime. Whale sharks for instance have approximately 300 rows of teeth, with hundred of tiny teeth in EACH row!
