Hundreds of sharks spotted off Florida
One of the hundreds of sharks spotted Tuesday north of Tampa, Florida. TAMPA, Florida (CNN) Officials issued public warnings Tuesday after hundreds of sharks were spotted in the waters off the west coast of Florida north of Tampa. Kevin Doll, public information officer for the Pasco County Sheriff's Department, said officers from the department's marine unit spotted the sharks from the air. Doll said several types of sharks were in the waters near the island of Anclote Key, including bull sharks, hammerheads and black-tipped sharks. Some of the sharks were reported to be more than 10 feet long. Sharks have been in the news recently after several highly publicized attacks. On July 6, a young Mississippi boy had his arm bitten off by a shark at Pensacola Beach in northwest Florida. Doctors were able to reattach the boy's arm, and he is now recovering at home. The Great White Shark The White Shark: Introduction Many paleontologists are very interested in living groups, because the study of the living organisms can both unlock their evolutionary history and provide important keys towards interpreting their fossil record. Some living groups have ancient histories. For example, sharks have existed as a group for over 350 million years! Today, sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) are represented by over 600 species that show a remarkable range of ecological and morphological diversity. Unlike the true fishes, sharks do not have internal bone, but instead have a cartilaginous skeleton. Although many people are told that sharks are primitive in comparison to other groups, this is not true. Many sharks are efficient and specialized hunters that have thrived for millions of years. This small exhibit shows an amazing predator: the great white shark Carcharodon carcharias ). The white shark is found in temperate waters throughout the world's oceans, and it is an important, though not common, predator in California`s coastal habitats. Scientists from several organizations throughout California including the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, the Marine Mammal Center, the California Academy of Sciences , Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory, California Department of Fish and Game, and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at U.C. Berkeley, have been studying white sharks and their prey for several years in hopes to better understand their behavior and ecology.

67. Introduction To The Chondrichthyes
Jaws. sharks, skates, rays, and even stranger fish make up the Chondrichthyes, or cartilaginous fish. First appearing on Earth almost 450 million years ago
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/vertebrates/basalfish/chondrintro.html
Introduction to the Chondrichthyes
Jaws
Sharks, skates, rays, and even stranger fish make up the Chondrichthyes, or "cartilaginous fish." First appearing on Earth almost 450 million years ago, cartilaginous fish today include both fearsome predators and harmless mollusc-eaters (harmless, that is, unless you are a mollusc). A number of shark and ray species are fished, commercially or for sport. Members of the Chondrichthyes all lack true bone and have a skeleton made of cartilage (the flexible material you can feel in your nose and ears). Only their teeth, and sometimes their vertebrae, are calcified; this calcified cartilage has a different structure from that of true bone. Thus, preservation of the whole body of a cartilaginous fish only takes place under special conditions. This complete fossil rhinobatoid (guitarfish one of the earliest rays), Rhinobatis , shown on display at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, is from the Upper Cretaceous of Haqel, Lebanon, a place that has yielded many complete fossil sharks and rays.

IUCN - The World Conservation Union is an umbrella organization of the world's conservation agencies and institutions. It includes both governmental and non-governmental members.
The IUCN actively supports the conservation of biological diversity, the preservation of life-support systems, and the sustainable use of living resources. The IUCN has six Commissions, including the Species Survival Commission (SSC), the largest and most active unit. Within the SSC are a series of specialist groups composed of conservation experts which promote action to arrest the loss of the world's biological diversity and to restore threat-ened species to safe and productive population levels. The Shark Specialist Group (SSG) and its regional shark specialist groups are composed of elasmobranch specialists willing to donate their time in identifying the problems associated with the maintenance of elasmobranch stocks in their regions. One of the SSG's first goals upon formation was to consolidate regional status reports into a global Action Plan for the conservation of sharks. The Action Plan will highlight global and regional problem areas and is anticipated to be a useful tool in developing funding to support needed elasmobranch research programs. Similar Action Plans generated by other SSC Specialist Groups have proven to be valuable documents that have guided the direction of conservation and aided in the procurement of research funding. The SSG's Action Plan is now being developed with release expected within a year.

Celebrating Peach's 200th - 3 new videos, 6 new images Written by sharks Thursday, 27 May 2004
To celebrate David Peachey's 200th first grade game, we have three new highlights videos of the first first grade games he played in, way back in 1994. No tries unfortunately, but even back then the skinny young fullback from Dubbo was starting to weave some magic. Healey, ET and Barnett are the real stars of these videos though. Also a footy card of the young Peach from 1994. And some less fun memories for him - of the Shayne Hayne debacle last year - but at least he was vindicated. And finally, proving there was something to smile about in 2003, two images from the paper following the Sharks ending the Dragons' season last year.

The phenomenon is best seen near Seal Island, a crowded seal colony near Cape Town, South Africa, where great whites and other sharks congregate to feed on the pinnipeds. National Geographic News interviewed Chris Fallows about the couple's work and asked him to share tips for amateur divers and photographers. Tell us about your work. Who does what job? 78. SHARKS
Educational pages about class Chondrichthyes.
http://www.geocities.com/buhsmsm/SHARKS.html
Search by:  Keyword Title Author DANGER DANGER DANGER For every human killed by a shark, 2 million sharks are killed by humans. Twelve million sharks are killed by humans each year, compared to six humans killed by sharks. At the rate at which shark fishing is proceeding, humans are jeopardizing world populations of apex predators that are essential to the health of marine communities. SHARKS Sharks, which comprise only about 1 percent of all living fishes, are highly evolved representatives of a large and unique group of fishes - the cartilaginous fishes, or class Chondrichthyes.
Characterizing sharks: Sharks are jawed fishes. Like all fishes they are aquatic, water-breathing vertebrates with a brain and spinal cord; fins; plate-like pairs of internal gills; and paired sense organs. Unlike most bony fishes, sharks do not have swim bladders or lungs. Sharks' jaws are simple but effective structures, armed with transverse rows of hard teeth that are replaced slowly but continuously. These teeth are not in sockets, but attached to the jaws by soft tissue.
Fins: All sharks have paired fins - pectoral and pelvic - on the underside of the body. The pectoral, or breast, fins are located just behind the gill region of the head. The pelvic fins are on the rear of the abdomen just in front of the tail. In male sharks, each pelvic fin has a clasper, or copulatory organ, for implanting sperm inside the vent (the common reproductive and excretory opening) of the female. The vent is located between the pelvic fins in both sexes. Most sharks have a cylindrical or slightly depressed head and body; a strong tail with caudal, or tail, fin; one or two dorsal fins on their back; and an anal fin on the underside of the tail behind the vent.

Page 1 Great White Shark
(Carcharodon carcharias) No animal inspires more fear in the mind of man that the Great White Shark. It is an aggressive and ruthless hunter, and in many ways, the ideal predator. This shark has been known to grow to over 25 feet in length. The Great White is very common in the Pacific ocean. They will eat almost anything, but prefer to dine on sea lions and other marine mammals. Tiger Shark
(Galeocerdo cuvier) The Tiger Shark is another ferocious predator. It is second only to the great white in its size and reputation as a killer. Tigers can grow to a length of over 16 feet. This shark has a big head, blunt snout, and gets its name from the stripe marks on its body. This dangerous shark will eat almost anything, and has been known to attack humans. Scalloped Hammerhead Shark
(Sphyrna lewini) The Scalloped Hammerhead is just one of several species of sharks that are characterized by a large hammer-shaped head. The shark's eyes are located on either end of this wing-like structure. This shark grows to a length of 14 feet, and feeds mainly on small fishes and invertebrates. It is an aggressive species and has been known to attack humans. Blue Shark
(Prionace glauca) The Blue Shark is a slender species that gets its name from the bright blue color of its tail and fins. It can be identified by its long, thin body and long, conical snout. The Blue is one of the most common sharks in the sea, and is found in many parts of the world. They are often seen swimming lazily at the surface, but have also been seen at depths of over 1600 feet.
