They held wide-ranging discussions on a number of bilateral issues and common continental concerns. This is not Dlamini-Zuma's first visit to Egypt. Dlamini-Zuma is a paediatrician who terminated a flourishing medical career to devote her life entirely to the anti-apartheid struggle. She headed the African National Congress health department in Lusaka, Zambia in the late 1980s, after working at a number of hospitals in England, South Africa and Swaziland. A former South African minister of health, Dlamini-Zuma is no stranger to the world of international diplomacy, but at heart she is still active in the medical sphere. Many are linked to similar ethnic groups living in inland countries. The north-central provinces of Zambezia and Nampula are the most populous, with about 45% of the population. Despite the influence of Islamic coastal traders and European colonizers, the people of Mozambique have largely retained an indigenous culture based on smallscale agriculture. Mozambique's most highly developed art forms have been wood sculpture, for which the Makonde in northern Mozambique are particularly renowned, and dance. The middle and upper classes continue to be heavily influenced by the Portuguese colonial and linguistic heritage. During the colonial era, Christian missionaries were active in Mozambique, and many foreign clergy remain in the country. According to the national census, about 20%-30% of the population is Christian, 15%-20% is Muslim, and the remainder adheres to traditional beliefs.

Geography and Climate The country of Mozambique is on the eastern coast of southern Africa bordered on the east by the Indian Ocean (the Mozambique channel), on the north by Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia, on the west by Zimbabwe and on the south by South Africa. The total area the country covers is 801,590 sq. km. and the coastline is 2,470 km. long. In comparison, the country is slightly less than twice the size of the U.S. state of California. The country has a wide plain of coastal lowlands in the south and in the north the plain narrows and rises to mountains and the plateaus. Also in the south there are many lakes, and the center of the country is dominated by the Zambezi river valley and its deltas. Other major rivers include the Limpopo (along with the Zambezi, two of southern Africa's largest rivers), the Save and the Rovuma which forms the border with Tanzania. Natural resources include coal, titanium, natural gas and hydropower.
