MADISON SHAMANIC DRUMMING CIRCLE
WELCOMES YOU!
Please Note: The Madison Shamanic Drumming Circle has gone through a bit of a change. The major changes are:
  • Meetings are now once a month, on the second Sunday. Time is extended one hour; 6 to 9 instead of 6 to 8. Participants should already have some Shamanic journeying experience
Time: 6:00 - 9:00 PM The second Sunday of every month. Please come promptly, the outside door is locked at 6:00 PM. Place: 301 South Bedford Street, at the Tai Chi Center.
Directions: S. Bedford empties into North Shore Drive, at the point where North Shore meets John Nolen Drive. North Shore turns into Regent Street when it crosses West Washington Ave. The Tai Chi Center is a large brick buiding at the corner of S. Bedford and North Shore Drive. It has a large painted sign on its side, advertising a long-departed tentmaking company. The door is always locked, but someone usually opens it about 5:45. If it's not open by then, just wait. Someone will be along. The door is locked shortly after six, so it will be difficult to get in if you arrive late. Shamanism is an ancient cross cultural phenomenon practiced by indigenous peoples long before the beginnings of modern-day religions. However, Shamanism is not a religion, it is an intimate way of deepening our connection to Spirit, ourselves, our community and the natural world around us. By learning the technique of

This broad and vague usage brings with it a lot of miscommunication and confusion.
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism comes from an Evensk word from the Tungus region of Siberia. Michael Harner's translation of 'shaman' is either "one who sees in the dark" or "one who sees with eyes closed." The word 'shaman' is not gender specific. It has no linguistic connection to 'man' or 'woman' and the pluralized 'shamen' or feminist 'shawoman' and 'shamaness' are misinformed at best and political or ignorant at worst. The word shaman describes a very specific role and methodology within Siberian tribal society. The methodology includes the use of the drum beat to instigate an ecstatic altered state of consciousness that allows the shaman to send his or her soul flying into the various spirit realms. Unlike other priests or magicians, instead of calling the spirits to our world, the shaman usually goes to the spirits.

Faces in Shamanism of Korea
Korean Shaman Painting is a kind of religious painting which shape gods worshiped by shamans in a human figures, put in a shrine. There are many words for Korean Shaman Painting such as Hwan, sugarless painting, but as it is a realistic painting of a god, it is generally called Korean Shaman god Painting Shamanism of Korea, which has the longest history since Kochosun, accepted shaman gods and foreign religions such as confucianism, buddhism and zen. Shamanism of Korea has as various gods as ½Å°ü in shamanism. It is divided into Korean shamanism (Mu) and godual shamanism and hereditary shamanism depending on whether a shaman is possessed of a god-god or not divides. As Korean Shaman god Painting is a painting of a god's god experienced while a shaman was receiving a god's god, no Korean Shaman Painting can generally be found in hereditary shamanism.
The number of Korean Shaman Painting is in proportion to that of gods as Korean Shaman Painting has. It has god of nature, which is god of which the function is to provide natural object that can be worshiped. And it has human god that can be worshiped. Among gods of nature there are god of sky, god of earth, god of water, god of agriculture, god of fire, and god of azimuth and so on.
For example there are the god of the sun, the moon, the god of star general, the god of seven stars, the god of a mountain, and three house gods and so on. These gods of nature govern the universe. Human gods are people with worldly power such as kings, queens, generals, senior monks, high and ranking officials, legendary figures, and religious figures. Most of these human gods were made to be worshiped by the changes of the time, social circumstances, and wars. That is to say, most of them died unfortunately. ZEN, THE BUDDHA AND SHAMANISM
Shamanism:
The coming warmth of the morning sun softly caresses the flower's unopened petals. As the flower expands to engulf the sun's rays, the prior night's dew slowly dissipates.
The sun gives freely, neither asking for nor expecting a return. Knowing it is neither gift nor taking, the flower blossoms without fear, gently adding it's own beauty and sense of being to it's surroundings and to those fortunate enough to pass within it's presence.
Enlightenment and Shamanism in their own way are similar...however, even for those that thus come, though the ancient bristlecone pine and the desert's saguaro cactus are great and noble entities, the pinetree's seed dropped at the saguaro's foot will not take root, nor the saguaro's seed at the pinetree's foot. Magnificent as each is, something else needs be done...

by Z. Kyrgyz
Female Shaman, Krasnojarsk region, 1780 Whereas art critics and psychiatrists have lately examined very intently shamanic and bewitching ceremonies of Yakuts, Buryats, Altai, American Indians and African ethnic groups, which are very similar to Tuvinian rituals. Tuvinian shamans, dancing and imitating animals and birds, posessed a striking gift of incarnating and a striking ability of constant changing their inward and outward appearance. During a ritual period with and without a mask, they talked and recitated musically, spoke their assistant's voice, conversed with him, imitated skillfully the voices and cries of animals and birds, their spirit-helpers / Siberian stag, ram, goat / and evil spirits / owl, crow, cuckoo/.
According to the shamanic concept, the Universe is divided into the three worlds, inhabited by people, animals, birds, various deities and spirits.
Tuvinians believed in aza-spirits, who killed people and caused diseases. It was the shaman, mediator between supernatural and human beings, who could communicate with spirits, see them, conquer in a fight and give back a sick man's soul. Spirit-helpers were ak-ereem amd Kyrgyz ereen. They helped to associate with sky-spirits.

Kim Yolkyu. shamanism, the belief that every natural object in the world has a soul, is the oldest folk belief of the Korean people.
http://www.korea.net/koreanculture/artguide/shamanism.html
The Spice in Korean Culture Kim Yol-kyu
With the establishment of Buddhism as the state religion and ideological guide of the royal court during the Unified Silla Kingdom (668-935), shamanism fell out of favor. Followers were subjected to severe repression during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), when Confucianism was adopted as the state religion. Throughout shamanism's long history, it incorporated Buddhist and Taoist elements and influences and also swayed certain aspects of Confucianism, demonstrating the faith's great capacity for cultural adaptability.
One of the most pronounced features of Korean shamanism today is the deep belief that the souls of the dead are ever present. Only the spirits of ancestors and people who died harboring grudges and deep resentment and those who died untimely deaths are honored in worship, however. Nature's spirits, Taoist deities, and reincarnated Buddhist deities fill the pantheon of Korean shamanism.
It is believed that the spirits of those who died young, who were murdered or died before fulfilling their dreams are able to play havoc with the living by causing them to suffer diseases or great misfortune. The spirits of the deceased, especially those who died harboring grudges, must be helped to find peace. A Korean shaman, or mudang in Korean, may be regarded as an expert in supernatural affairs, one who is able to dissolve the conflicts and tensions that are believed to exist between the dead and the living by reconciling the two. Korean shamans are thus spiritual mediums acting between the dead and the living. These are features that Korean shamanism shares with the so-called "Black Shamanism" of the indigenous inhabitants of Siberia.

About Shamanism
The Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies was set up my Martin Duffy to promote and research traditional and contemporary Shamanism Shamanism is an ancient spiritual system dating back over 50,000 years. This tradition forms the roots of all healing and spiritual models. We can all trace our shamanic ancestry back through time, whether it be through Celtic, European, American or Aboriginal origins. A Shaman is an individual who can through various techniques such as drumming, dancing and dreaming to change their sate of consciousness and journey outside time, or ordinary reality, to the non ordinary realms of magic and mystery. The Shaman travels beyond the "matrix" of ordinary reality to contact the spirit world to seek healing, knowledge and power to help the individual and the community. The Shaman uses ecstatic techniques to enter the shamanic state of consciousness (SSC) travel out of the body, make contact with spirit guides and power animals and therefore effect changes in ordinary reality. Working closely with nature and the elemental forces is also a very important aspect of the Shaman's role.

-Founded: 02/14/1998-
Greetings Traveler from Afar,
You have reached the official home page of The Beast Within - A Spiritual Web Ring . This web ring is dedicated to honor animal spirit guardians and shapeshifters. Our guardians have many names, such as animal familiars, spirit helpers, spirit guardians, totem animals, or power animals. The name isn't really that important. They are our protectors, guardians, teachers, mentors, and friends. They help us overcome difficult tasks in our daily lives, and help us grow spiritually. All we have to do is invite them into our lives, and ask for their help. Are you aware of your guardian? Do you believe in the possibility of shapeshifting? Are you a shapeshifter? The ability to shapeshift is innate to all of us, all we have to do is rediscover this long forgotten art of personal and global change. The only true change is a shapeshift, everything less will simply fail. Every single one of us shapeshifts in one form or another, sometimes without even realizing it. We are many, and we are all around you. :) TBWWR is dedicated to bring people from all walks of life, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with different philosophies, outlooks on life, and belief-systems together to share their views, dreams, experiences, poetry, art, and knowledge with one another. The Spirit World doesn't have such limits or prejudices, and why should we even be concerned about them? After all, are we not the same? Aren't we connected to each other, no matter who we are or what our appearance happens to be? Energy is everything, everything is energy. The emphasis lies within our spirtuality, with the Spirit of the animal, our Guardian and Protector, the Beast Within. The more we learn from our teachers the stronger we grow spiritually, and the happier and more fulfilled we are.

What is Shamanism?
Jump to Transformational Resources In my spiritual walk of faith, I have experienced Shamanistic journeying. There are those who would say this is not true, because my skin is too light and my eyes too blue. Some would say it is not true because I did not get to these other realms thru the use of Peyote, Datura, Ayahuasca, etc. Some would say it is not true because I have not trained with a Shaman and do not, in this present incarnation, come from a lineage of known Medicine Men. Some would even say it is not true because I am a woman. I no longer have any need to prove my experiences to anyone, anywhere. The information printed here is here for sharing and not at all open to debate. I really have no investment in what any reader may think of it. One is free to read or not read. Judge or not judge. What is a Shaman?
I guess it depends on who you ask. For many, Shamanism is a very mysterious and unknown journey and better left to the experts. For most, a true shamanistic experience holds a potential for sheer terror because it intrinsically involves letting go of current reality or, rather and even more frightening to most, merging current reality with other-realm reality without losing the ability to know which is which. Most Shamans spend a great deal of time alone, in ceremony. Particularly in the beginning stages of a Shamanistic initiation, the alone time is needed to integrate the energies, adjust to the higher frequency that results and walk in the new reality in a balanced way.

Northern European Shamanism: A Preliminary Reconstruction
ici . (It's got cool pictures, too! ;) Shamanism has come to be associated almost exclusively, in American popular thinking, with the aboriginal inhabitants of the Americas. This not only inaccurately reflects the extent of shamanism's practice (it is found from Australia to the Arctic) but also, sadly, contributes to a neglect by those of European descent of the shamanic practices of their own ancestors. One cause of this neglect has been the carefully fostered image of Europe as the wellspring of Western Civilization, by which tribal origins and traditional life are often glossed over. However, I was delighted to discover, when I examined ancient sources, that I did not need to borrow from other traditions; it is clear that tribal Europe had as strong a shamanic tradition as, for example, any of the American Indian tribes. It is fitting that other people, too, of European descent examine this European Shamanic tradition; it is a rightful part of our heritage so there need be no accusations of theft or exploitation, and its images and symbols ring more truly in our collective unconscious than those of other cultures. This is a survey of a few shamanic elements that occur within Western shamanic traditions, obscured as they are by time and cultural discontinuity. I will be using material from many Northern European cultures, on the assumption that each one may have retained some element that the others have lost. The similarities between them all have convinced me that there actually was, once, a unified European system, and Hilda R. Ellis Davidson, in
