What is shamanism? The word shaman originated from a word in Siberia and eventually came to be applied to all medicine men and women of indigenous cultures who's practice includes the flight of the soul. Anthropologist studying indigenous cultures throughout the world began to find that there were similarities from culture to culture in the way the medicine men and women worked with healing. While there were differences due to culture, once the cultural reference is removed a core system of practices can be seen, called core-Shamanism - a phrase coined by Michael Harner.

O'SIYO Greetings, and welcome to my web page. I thank my mother, who started me on the
medicine path as a child, by showing me the importance and value of plants and herbs, and the importance of knowing that all of creation is sacred.
Through the years, I have learned from many people, of different traditions and beliefs. I am of mixed blood; Cherokee and European. I don't want people to think that these pages are just American Indian, or shamanic, or pagan in nature. They are merely a collection of my observations and musings. I have been on the medicine path for most of my life, and have been sharing it with others for twenty years. Blessings and love to my special friends, and fellow path-walkers.

I am always with you. Call on me if you ever need me. My love travels to you on the wind, and we share one heart; though we are many. You shall always be my dearest of friends, and I pray that our paths cross many times as we walk.
I am never gone; look in your heart; I am there.

Shamanism
When you hear the word "shamanism," what images jiffy-pop into your mind's eye? Most folks picture feather headdresses, buffalo hides, medicine wheels and dream-catchers—all images associated with Native American cultures. But contrary to popular opinion, a "shaman" is not an Indian medicine man, and "shamanism" is not a Native American religion. In fact, many Native Americans find the terms "shaman" and "shamanism" offensive. The word "shaman" actually originates among the natives of Siberia, where it describes a specialized type of holy person. The shamans of Siberia interact with deities and spirits not only with prayer, ritual and offerings, but also through direct contact with the spirits themselves. With the aid of rhythmic drumming and chanting, the shaman enters a very deep or "ecstatic" trance. (In discussions of shamanism, the word "ecstasy" is used in its original sense, from the Greek roots ex and histanai meaning "out of place" or "out of the physical” —in other words an out-of-body mystical state) This trance frees the shaman's consciousness from the body, allowing it to

of religious experience Italian Translation THE IMPOSSIBLE METHOD While risking certain general conclusions, this article draws almost entirely on the personal experience of Ken Hyder and myself as improvising musicians. We have been working together since 1979. Near neighbours in South London, we met through a common interest in community politics and cultural action, and quickly discovered that we both enjoyed a good argument. Aware that improvised music often relies on the constant challenge of working in untried combinations of musicians, we set out to do exactly the opposite, and committed ourselves to long-term duo work. Over years of playing and arguing and arguing and playing, two questions seem to have occupied us the most. The first is a question for any ongoing improvising duo: What can you carry forward from one playing session to the next, that does not compromise the improvisational activity? Can you get consistently good at improvising together without repeating yourselves by using conscious or unconscious rules? The second was perhaps more peculiar to us and to a certain social" perspective we shared: What significance, if any, should be attached to the subjective language of improvising musicians? Despite more recent analytical tendencies in the practice of improvisation, the language used by musicians is still strongly influenced by a Free Jazz subculture with a distinctly 1960s discourse in which ideas of spontaneity and magic are important. Thus performance is special: normal rational processes would interfere with it. The language of subjectivity used by musicians protects against such interference. But it can also be read as making explicit the parallel between improvised performance and certain typos of religious experience.

111. Emily Dickinson And Shamanism, By Clifton Snider
A Druidic Difference Emily Dickinson and shamanism. 101), and I believe that the archetype she chiefly represents and is driven by is shamanism.
http://www.csulb.edu/~csnider/dickinson.shamanism.html
Clifton Snider
English Department
California State University, Long Beach "A Druidic Difference": Emily Dickinson and Shamanism That Emily Dickinson published almost no poems while she was alive yet became enormously popular when her first book appeared four years after her death is a well known fact. [. . .] it can be a revelation whose heights and depths are beyond our fathoming, or a vision of beauty which we can never put into words. [. . .] the primordial experiences rend from top to bottom the curtain upon which is painted the picture of an ordered world, and allow a glimpse into the unfathomable abyss of the unborn and of things yet to be. ("Psychology and Literature" 90). Something in her psyche drove her to probe those "heights and depths," which were often beyond her own fathoming. This something Jung calls an "innate drive" (ibid. 101), and I believe that the archetype she chiefly represents and is driven by is shamanism. Not a shaman in the traditional sense as described by Mircea Eliade in his classic, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy , Dickinson nevertheless fits Joan B. Townsend's description of neo-shamans as people "often disenchanted with traditional religions and often with much of Western society. Although they tend not to be affiliated with any organized religion, they all continue intensive personal quests for spirituality, meaning, and transcendence" (78). Her personal questher personal myth as expressed in her poetrycompensates for contemporary imbalance through a search for meaning in the face of the breakdown of collective myths. Had she lived in another era and been associated with a religion or belief system that included shamans, no doubt Dickinson would have been a shaman in the traditional sense, for she is concerned about the same mysteries that concern shamans and investigates these mysteries using the imagery of shamanism. These mysteries include death and the afterlife, as well as suffering, loss, and healing.

Shamanism Is the Original Neurotheology
"Neurotheology" has become an increasingly common concept since a Newsweek article (05/17/01) God and the Brain: How We're Wired for Spirituality was published. The term reflects the idea that spiritual experiences have a biological basis. "While the term neurotheology is new, the basic ideas have been around for thousands of years," says Dr. Michael Winkelman, Department of Anthropology, Arizona State University. "Many cultures have developed technologies for altering consciousness and inducing spiritual experiences." Winkelman describes shamanisman ancient healing practicewithin the context of neurotheology. Scholars have recognized shamanism as a special form of religious behavior for more than a century. Winkelman's earlier cross-cultural research on shamanism outlined in his book, Shamans, Priests and Witches , demonstrated that there were basic similarities in shamans in cultures around the world. The similarities in shamans include the use of trance or ecstasyaltered states of consciousness (ASC)to interact with the spirits and heal. These spirit world interactions are often referred to as "soul journeys," out-of-body experiences, and astral projection. These abilities are acquired when the initiate shaman undergoes a "death and rebirth experience" and acquires animal allies and spirit powers. In his recent book

The documents have strong connections with earlier apocalyptic and gnostic literature and claim to describe the self-induced spiritual experiences of the "descenders to the chariot" that permitted these men to view Ezekiel's chariot vision (the Merkavah) for themselves, as well as to gain control of angels and a perfect mastery of Torah through theurgy. This material is of particular interest for the study of divine mediation and mystical/revelatory experiences, because the Hekhalot documents claim to detail actual practices used to reach trance states, gain revelations, and interact with divine mediators. My thanks to Central College for a research and development grant that helped make this study possible. The textual basis of the Hekhalot literature for this paper is found in Peter Sch

CREATIVITY SACRED ART SACRED SCIENCE CONSCIOUSNESS ... LINKS You are visitor to this site!
CREATIVE HARMONICS is a method of creatively drawing the harmonic codes out of the universe and using them for the benefit of all beings. Harmonic codes are inherent in creation, and it is for us human beings to live within and live by them for the greater purpose of the universe.
When all three aspects of CONSCIOUSNESS, SACRED ART AND SACRED SCIENCE work together we have CREATIVE HARMONICS.
CONSCIOUSNESS is the means for Creative Harmonics to interface the spiritual and practical worlds, and SACRED ART is a way of expressing that consciousness. SACRED SCIENCE is a method of research about the phenomenal world that is symbolic of the spiritual worlds.
Rowena Pattee Kryder, M.F.A., Ph.D . has been working all her life for a vision of a New Earth culture and is working with children and adults to experience principles based on love, truth and beauty. She works with archetypes, symbolism, art, and sacred science, using both the right and left sides of the brain, united with the heart. This implies CREATIVITY and loving wholeness.

Cyber-shamanism: Backward-compatible Belief Systems in the Post-modern Era
Shamanism and shamans have been with humanity throughout its existence, yet strangely, the traditions of modern shamanism are rarely mentioned. Instead, distant cultures and the past are seem to be regarded as the source of all kinds of shamanism, as if new traditions, relying on modern developments could never spring up, as if rather than considering what happens today where one is, it were more important to remember what happened long ago in Siberia. Yet shamanism is hardly incompatible with the flow of modern civilization and current values. Indeed, current trends in shamanism, while rarely discussed, show how readily a shamanistic world view can integrate with a modern one, just as the shamanistic traditions of the Buryat or other tribes harmonized with their lives. As an enlightening example of how shamanism fits smoothly into a modern technological world-view, consider the case of the computer shamen, sometimes known as 'cybershamen'. Like most varieties of shamanism, the cybershamen's practice relies on journeys out of what the shamen often call "rl". Nevertheless, their costumes, sacred tongues, tools, rituals, and tales of their journeys do make them easy to distinguish from the shamen of other peoples and from their traditions.
