The later part of the book describes via photo-essays the Shamanist rituals still occurring today those which summon the deities, the "Ten Thousand Spirits" who may arrive in answer to the shaman's call. These include the famous generals of history, who will drive away disease, one general so fierce he walks on sharpened knives, a performance the shaman duplicates without being cut! The female ruler of the earth spirits, a patroness of diviners, also comes and sometimes hungry ghosts direct from the underworld; they gobble their food but cannot swallow. Then Pali Kongju may come, to rescue souls from the clutches of brutal guards of Hell. Also disclosed are the life stories of various individual shamans, the

Shamanism Among the Peoples of Western and Eastern Siberia
Karina Solovyova Russian Museum of Ethnography Koryak group with a drum, 1915. S hamans played an important role in the lives of their tribal members and were protectors and intermediaries between humans and spirits. The training and development of future shamans required several years. As soon as the clan acknowledged a candidate for shaman and the candidate's right to be a shaman, the ritual of consecration occurred. Ritual actions were also obligatory when the shaman received each special object. The baton was one of the major shamanic ritual artifacts for the Evenks, Sel'kups, Nenets, and Kets, and it had many symbolic functions. It was used as a striking instrument, and it also represented a special spirit helper of the shaman for the Evenks and Kets. It was also pogonyalka ghis , literally means "talking" or the "object for telling the future," and this emphasized another function. The Evenks used the baton to forecast the future regarding the offspring of the reindeer herd or the loss and the fate of people. The shaman threw the baton towards the interested person, and the future was determined by how it would fall. Some batons of Sel'kup shamans had a cavity with stones inside and were used as rattles instead of as drumsticks. The Sel'kups also used the baton to cure the sick. By touching the place of pain with the baton, the shaman extracted the cause of the disease (the evil spirit), or he or she placed the sought-after soul of the sick person on the end of the handle and then back into the person.

Shamanism
If you're going to be religious, you could do a lot worse than being a shaman. Out of all the various titles of religious authority, only the temple whore can lay claim to having more fun than the shaman, and even that's debatable. The most ancient known tradition of religious authority, shamans access the divine through ecstatic trance. This trance can be achieved through any number of means, including orgiastic sex, chanting, fasting, wild dancing and the ingestion of hallucinogenic drugs. Through one or more of these means, the shaman (often, but not always, male) leaves the confines of his physical body and travels to other, presumably higher realms. During these visionary experiences, the shaman can accomplish any number of useful tasks, such as chatting with the gods, calling down rain, performing Magic and healing the sick. Shamanic traditions date back to prehistoric times, and they can be found in virtually every culture and geographic region in the early history of humanity. The late drug guru Terence McKenna traces the roots of shamanism back to the very beginnings of human consciousness. According to McKenna (whose recreational drug use renders him either biased or especially knowledgeable, depending on your point of view), the earliest humans used hallucinogenic mushrooms to stay tuned into the divine.

Shamanism, evolved from archaic techniques of ecstasy in Siberia and spread throughout the world, involves magical/religious communication, plant allies, healing, and early conceptions of nature. Modern shamans use ancient techniques as well as modern science, technology, alternative medicine, and psychotherapy to promote healing and balance with nature.

I am the foreign outreach representative of the Mongolian Shamans' Center, called Golomt, or Gulamta in Buryat Mongolian. Golomt means "place of the fire," it is the place where Father Heaven and Mother Earth meet and is the symbolic center of the world in Buryat-Mongolian shamanism. The tradition of Buryat-Mongolian shamanism is at least 5000 years old, probably much older, and Buryat culture represents one of the oldest cultural traditions on earth. The wisdom of Siberian shamanism is applicable in the modern world today. Its basic principles are reverence for the earth and sky, keeping the world and one's personal life in balance, and personal responsibility.

http://www.azizshamanism.com/
About Aziz Shamanism Peter Aziz was born in 1960, into a family with a deep shamanic bloodline. His maternal grandmother, who passed the tradition to him, was from a long line of Hungarian Shamans. When deceased she often came in vision to teach him. He has also studied North American Pueblo Indian and Kahuna Shamanism, as well as homeopathy, acupuncture, kinesiology, iridology, and body electronics. He also has a degree in physics. He now has over thirty years experience of Shamanism, and has become well known for healing 'incurable' illness, and for his experience at communicating with nature spirits. He lives in Devon, where he practises as a healer and runs courses in shamanic healing, magick, and body electronics. Shamanism is an art in which the individual wakes up to reality by shedding the illusions of humanity and withdrawing into the wilderness to learn directly from nature. It does not belong to any culture or religion; the true ideal of a Shaman is to go beyond the limitation of any human structure.

http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/55a/092.html
Korean Shamanism
It might be argued that shamanism represents the original human religion, for archaeologists have adventurously inferred evidence of shamanism among homo sapiens. Its broad distribution over the world also suggests that in some ways shamanism is the quintessence of human religiosity. It remains important today, less often explicitly (as in Haiti) than implicitly (as in Pentecostal or Full Gospel Protestantism). A shaman - a word of Siberian origin - is a person who mediates the relation between the natural world and an animated supernatural world (spirits) for the purpose of gaining some control over or knowledge of natural events. The practice is symptomatic of circumstances in which people either had too little power to change their fate (as in early societies) or whose personal power is insufficient in a world that seems overwhelming or threatening (as under modern capitalism). To achieve a connection with a power that is supernatural, the shaman is mounted or taken over by a spirit after having liberated his or her mind from natural limitation. This liberating process is often achieved by drugs such as tobacco (once known as "sot-weed" for this reason) or soma, spinning or dancing, drumming or singing of deep tones. The word shaman is not only originally Siberian, but Northeast Asia seems to have been a major center of later diffusions of the religion into the Americas (Native American shamanism) and later throughout Eurasia (as in early Southeast Asia and Germanic Europe). Because the deepest roots of Korean civilization lay in the Altaic region of Northeast Asia, it is not surprising that shamanism had an important role in Korean culture, as it also does in the Tibetan. When a new Tungusic people called the Yamacek entered the Korean Peninsula in the beginning of the first millennium B.C., they introduced a profoundly shamanistic culture.
