Welcome to the Shamanism section of the Buryat Home Page. Buryat shamanism is renowned for its ancient traditions and legendary shamans through the works of Mircea Eliade, Michael Harner, and others. Please check back here frequently as new things will be added. Also please visit the home page of the Golomt Center for Shamanist Studies for detailed information about Mongolian shamanism and mythology. Buryat and Mongolian shamanism are essentially one and the same, the distinction of Mongol and Buryat comes late in history, for until the latter part of the 17th century present day Buryatia and adjacent Buryat Mongol regions were an integral part of the Mongolian Empire and had been since the time of Chinggis Khan. The Contribution of Buryatia to World Culture
"Tenger, humans, fire and water, those are the elements. If we think about it, there is the vast arch of the sky, and the sun and moon, like Tenger's eyes. If we look, the sun is fire, the moon is water. In 50 years' time all of humanity will realize that clean air and pure water are the most important things in the world."
Urgunge Onon

The thing most commonly associated with the Buryat-Mongolian culture from a Westerner's standpoint is the tradition of shamanism. No book about shamanism fails to mention Buryat or Mongolian shamanism. It is without a doubt one of the oldest religious and cultural traditions in the world.

I am the foreign outreach representative of the Mongolian Shamans' Center, called Golomt, or Gulamta in Buryat Mongolian. Golomt means "place of the fire," it is the place where Father Heaven and Mother Earth meet and is the symbolic center of the world in Buryat-Mongolian shamanism. The tradition of Buryat-Mongolian shamanism is at least 5000 years old, probably much older, and Buryat culture represents one of the oldest cultural traditions on earth. The wisdom of Siberian shamanism is applicable in the modern world today. Its basic principles are reverence for the earth and sky, keeping the world and one's personal life in balance, and personal responsibility.

This section on the ANAM site is devoted specifically to Irish Celtic shamanism and shamanic healing practice. Discussions, courses and holidays exploring our interaction and relationship with the land, our ancestors, finding our true life purpose, and coming home to the heart. Our emphasis is on the practical aspects of shamanic working and in sharing our own experience. Each worker's practice is unique, grown of their own work, experiences, and relationships with guides, animals, spirits and teachers. Perhaps the one thing we all have in common is our deep connection to land and spirit. I am blessed to live in the countryside in Celtic Ireland so this is where my practice is based. Great insights and awareness are always found in openly sharing between all our different paths and traditions....

However, it is not enough to merely recognize the places and beings of supernatural world. To gain full control over the vision, it must be described in words - to sing or retell it. For singing or retelling one's experiences means giving a more traditional form to an individual experience. Individuals who are acquainted since early childhood with shamanic tradition have naturally more necessary knowledge for expressing in words their visions than other people. It is during the initiation period that the devotee acquires most of his songs - descriptions of helping spirits and journeys. A son often applies the melodies of his father's or grandfather's shaman songs.
An active traditionary control over shaman visions continues after the initiation period is over. In case of an experienced shaman, this is expressed by guessing or so-called 'quest for the right path' taking place during rituals. With the help of such guessing untypical or inappropriate elements are eliminated from the shaman actions. Advice sought by the shamans from people who have a good knowledge of the tradition in a difficult situation is also a part of the traditionary control. Often, an experienced shaman has to continue recognizing and naming objects and beings of the supernatural world during the rites. For example, Tubyaku Kosterkin, a Nganasan shaman, had three helping spirits called

NATUR WORSHIP IN SIBERIAN SHAMANISM
Mihaly Hoppal
During the last few decades animism has escaped the attention of scholars of comparative religion. Animism, however, still represents a very important concept both in the world view and the shamanism of Northern Siberian peoples. In this paper different types of the concept of the soul will be enumerated, and animistic notions of Siberian shamanism will be presented against that background. Special attention will be paid to the different types of shamanic spirit helpers, and to the forms of their representation.
What kind of symbols play what kind of roles in that representation? The answers to that question will lead us to a semiotic understanding of Northern Siberian shamanism. Siberian shamanism, moreover, is involved in the cult of the dead, of ancestors and mountains, and in rituals of animal sacrifice. As a conclusion, one could say that the deepest meaning or message of Siberian animism was to balance man and nature.
Introduction
As it is well known, it was the 19th century English anthropologist, Sir Edward Tylor, who first coined the term "animism" for the earliest period of magico-religious thinking, in his 1871 work "Primitive Culture" Tylor made the distinction between the concepts

http://www.wicca.com/celtic/wyldkat/shmnindex.htm
Greetings my friends,
Shamanism is a set of tools and techniques used to interact with the spirit world and the world around us. It has no specific pantheon of gods and is attached to no particular culture. It is a way of looking at the world and at yourself. There are no hard set rules, no hierarchy to try and work through. Shamanism is the oldest known form of spiritual practice. It is a time-tested practice, what works is kept, what doesn’t is left behind. When our ancient ancestors prayed that the spirit of the Deer would come to them allowing them a good hunt, they were using shamanic techniques although I am sure that was not the word they used to describe it.
Shamanism is a personal quest for knowledge and inner power, but it is a quest that has traditionally taken place within the confines of a tribe or family group. The same holds true for those who follow a shamanic path today, but our groups might be different. We could work to guide and aid our family or a group of friends or a pagan circle. These groups are just as valid and appropriate a place for a modern person walking a shamanic path as a tribe was to an ancient one. A shaman's place is within a community, not apart from it.
Shamans have held an important place in many different cultures throughout the world since our beginnings. They have been mediators, ceremonialists, healers, diviners, many different kinds of artists and much more. They learn and work with power for both themselves and the good of those around them. They understand the connection and need for balance amongst all things, that all aspects of the world that we share with the rest of creation is alive, humans, animals, plants, rocks, and even the wind.

hamanism is perhaps one of the oldest divinatory practices in the world to promote healing . By archaeological and anthropological evidence the practice has existed for some 20,000 to 30,000 years, perhaps since the beginning of the human race. Evidence of shamanism has been found globally in isolated regions of the Americas, Asia, Africa, regions of Europe and Australia. Usually shamans are called to their profession in two ways: by heredity or by spontaneous and involuntary election by the Supernaturals. There are some who seek out the training, but these individuals are not considered as powerful. An exception to the latter is found the Native North Americans because many undertake vision quests to ask for healing power or the help of a guardian spirit . The shaman is distinguished from others by the greater number of his guardian spirits, by the intensity of his vision, and by his greater power. Although differences of practices are found among the cultures similarities are found too. The shaman lives in two worlds: the ordinary and the nonordinary reality, also called the "shamanic state of consciousness." To enter the shamanic state the shaman must experience an ecstatic trance , or he will not be able to perform all the required functions or duties. This qualification is what sets the shaman apart from all other priests and adepts. When entering the nonordinary reality, which is an unique altered state of consciousness (see

Oh how the days and months fly! Mid-March already, can you believe it? I know it's been a LONG time since my last post, I just haven't felt inclined to write anything, but was suddeny kicked back into action. The newest post is a little blurb on my view of the world and it's belief structure, it's a little philosophical so you'll have to pardon me for being a little intense. Anyway, there should be another post soon, I'm working on writing up meditation techniques. But for now, this'll havta do ;-)
