One of the more colorful and fascinating aspects of Tlingit ceremonial history is shamanism. The Tlingit Indians believed in malevolent spirits that interfered with their lives. Only an individual who possessed certain knowledge, i.e. the shaman, could intercede and break their power. For example, the shaman could cure the sick by driving out evil spirits; he could guarantee large fish runs and good weather. Often his powers were called upon to assure success in battle or to combat witches. A famous Yakutat shaman is credited with preventing the great smallpox epidemic of 1836 from reaching his village. A shaman had at his command a number of spiritual helpers called yeks through which he made contact with the supernatural world. Each yek was assigned a special name and song. Yeks could assume both animal and human form, and were the subject of shamanic art, especially carved masks. The success of the shaman, who incidentally was well paid in advance for his services, depended upon the number of yeks under his control, and his rapport with them . If the shaman's efforts met with failure, he usually had an explanation for the client such as interference by bad spirits. Another payment would then be required for further services. The appearance of the shaman must have been impressive. His hair was never cut or combed, and formed a long mat down his back. His costume- typically a hide apron, shoulder robe and crown-could be decorated with animal claws and carved bones. During his wild contorted dance to conjure up the spirit world, he often donned the mask of the desired yek. While manipulating rattles, charms and batons, the shaman would chant, groan, hiss, cry, and so forth, until he worked himself into a trance-like state.

I began my journey into rhythm by studying with Mongolian shaman Jade Wah'oo Grigori . Jade's ancient knowledge of drumming and healing rhythms was most influential in putting together my first book, The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to Sacred Drumming . I had a deep respect for the powerful rhythms and drum ways of Jade's tradition, but I had to follow my own path of rhythm. Though Jade was my mentor, the drum became the guiding force in my life. It led me to explore the rhythms of many of the world's shamanic traditions. Inspired by my studies, research, and experiences, I founded Talking Drum Publications in 1991 in order to publish and disseminate information related to shamanic drumming. Estimated to be between 20,000 and 30,000 years old, shamanic drumming is a time-honored method of healing and helping others. Practiced in diverse cultures around the planet, this technique is strikingly similar the world over. Shamanic drumming uses a single, repetitive rhythm played at a tempo of some three to four beats per second. Although sounding quite simple and redundant, the unique connection between the drum and the shaman gives this drumming great power, richness, and depth. Through the many tones, pitches, and harmonics of the drum, the shaman communes with the subtle and normally unseen energies of the spirit world. (From Shaman or Saman , a word derived by Bantzaroff from Manchu saman , i.e., an excited or raving man, by van Gennep and Keane from Saman a Tungus word; others say a later dialectic form of the Sanskrit sraman , i.e., a worker or toiler.) A vague term used by explorers of Siberia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to designate not a specific religion but a form of savage magic or science, by which physical nature was believed to be brought under the control of man. It prevails among Turanian and Mongolian tribes and American Indians, and blends with their varied religious beliefs and customs. Thus the Turanians believe the shamans were a class created by the heaven-god Tengri to struggle for men's good against the evil spirits . The Buddhist Mongols call Shamanism shara-shadshin , i.e., the black faith, the Chinese tjao-ten , i.e., dancing before spirits. The shamans are variously designated, e.g., by Tatars kam , by Samoyeds taryib , by Ostjaks tadib , by Buriates boe , by Yakut Turks oyun , by American Indians medicine men , In the Bhagavata Purana the Jains are called shramans. Shaman will not be used to refer simply to any medicine man, fakir, or magician, but only to members of that subset of those more general classes which share a sufficient number of characteristics with the paradigmatic case of shamanism, the Siberian/Central Asian. Briefly, shamans of this type cure, they escort the souls of the dead, they fly, they control fire, but by far the most important, they employ techniques of ecstasy; that is to say, they leave their bodies. Each of these elements will be elaborated upon later. Eliade notes that shamanism most frequently coexists with other magico-religious belief systems, rather than assimilating or being assimilated by them. It is in part for this reason that a strict definition of shamanism is useful, in order to differentiate between groups that might otherwise mistakenly be categorized together. Interestingly, we will find that belief systems all over the world share a large number of the elements of shamanism with the paradigmatic case, despite having no geographical or cultural point of contact with Siberia or Central Asia. SHAMANISM
A shaman is a medicine man. Shaman are spiritual beings with the ability to heal, work with energies and 'see' visions. The essential characteristics of shaman are mastery of energy and fire as a medium of transformation. A shaman may exhibit a particular magical specialty - such as control over fire, wind, magical flight, or shape shifting. In contemporary, historical or traditional shamanic practice the shaman may at times fill the role of priest, magician, metaphysician or healer. Personal experience is the prime determinant of the status of a shaman. The distinguishing characteristic of shamanism is its focus on an ecstatic trance state in which the soul of the shaman is believed to leave the body and ascend to the sky (heavens) or descend into the earth (underworld). The shaman makes use of spirit helpers, with whom he or she communicates, all the while retaining control over his or her own consciousness. The ability to consciously move beyond the physical body is the particular specialty of the traditional shaman. These journeys of Soul may take the shaman into the nether realms, higher levels of existence or to parallel physical worlds or other regions of this world. Shamanic Flight, is in most instances, an experience not of an inner imaginary landscape, but is reported to be the shamans flight beyond the limitations of the physical body. While most shamans in traditional societies are men, either women or men may and have become shamans.

BON TRADITION OF TIBET

Shamanism, an ancient Tradition found in cultures throughout the world, values a balanced relationship between humanity and Nature. Because of the recent alarming increase in pollution and exploitation of the environment, along with the consequential negative ramifications, such as the emergence of new illnesses, it has become even more important for humankind to recover the principle of harmony central to Shamanism in order to repair the damage done to the Earth, as well as to save people and Nature from negativity and illness.
There is an ancient Tibetan myth on the origin of negativity that recounts the causes of illness:
From the vast voidness wherein nothing exists, there arose light, Nangwa Oden (Appearance with Light), and also darkness. Male darkness, Munpa Zerden (Rays of Darkness) lay with female darkness, Munji Gyatso (Ocean of Darkness), and by their union whe gave birth to a poisonous egg.
This egg was hatched by the force of its own energy and steam issued into the sky, giving rise to the negative energy of space. Thunder, hail and planetary disturbances came into existence. The albumen spilled onto the Earth and polluted it, giving rise to naga-derived illnesses such as physical handicaps, leprosy and skin diseases. The shell gave rise to harmful weapons and infectious diseases, and the disturbances and illnesses of humans and animals came forth from the membrane. From the yolk essence there came forth Chidag Nagpo (Black Life-Stealing Fiend) with bulging wrathful eyes, gnashing teeth, and matted hair with blood rising into the sky like a cloud, holding the black cross (of evil power) in his right hand and the disease-dispensing lasso in his left.

Korea, like other Asian people, maintain ancient traditions such as KUT, exorcising ceremonies, which resemble those of the Nothern American medicine man or African witch doctor. These practices have not been fully institutionalized into a religion in the way Shintoism has been in Japen. However, shamanism has been kept very alive in Korea.
TWO KINDS OF SHAMAN
Korean shamans can be roughly divided into two types: possessed, or charismatic shamans and hereditary shamans. The former, called NAERIM MUDANG, are typically found in the northern half of the Korean peninsula. After suffering from SINBYONG, an illness which is generally interpreted as a sign of a shamistic calling, a potential NAERIM MUDANG apprentices herself to an established shaman from she acquires the knowledge and skills appropriate to her new occupation. The two Woman establish a 'spirit mother'-'spirit daughter' relationship, the spirit mother later conducting the initiation rite which transforms her apprentice into a full-fledged shaman. In the course of their rites, these shamans not only become possessed and experience ecstatic trance states themselves but may also induce their clients to do the same. The hereditary shamans, called TANGOL MUDANG, are found in the southern half of the Korean peninsula. They are recruited not through possession sickness but simply by being born into a shaman's family. Though this type of shaman does not undergo trance possessed and herself, she may cause of a rite.

Introduction A blue gray horizon loomed outside the window of the plane as it slowly banked and turned toward the airport still miles ahead of us. The plane turned as another glow punctuated the breach between the zodiacal light and the darkness that enveloped the earth below. The glow had the yellow-white tinge of city lights reflected up from a huge urban aggregate of life, power, and activity. As we descended into the dark landscape a long tentacle of lights reached out below, stretching from that still distant aurora. More tentacles appeared below stretching in all directions. Motionless, they laid full the valleys, extended up ridge lines and spilled over crests as if to defy containment. At last the conglomerate of lights radiated below us. We sailed through the sky above it for thirty minutes or more. It was as if we were gazing down at some giant primordial sea creature that had flung itself from the ocean depths and wedged among the rolling hills to await the warming sun of morning. The sprawl below us was not what I had expected. This was not the emerald forest I had imagined, rather it was a jungle of humanity into which we descended. It was not my preconceived notion of idyllic tribal life with the local witchdoctor to show us his healing gifts. It was a world of urban shamans. Not the chic metropolitan healers suggested by the cover of Gabrielle Roth's book titled

For 20 millennia droning drums and rattles have guided seekers to the sacred space between creation and the formless.
Becoming a shaman one treads a path of experiential learning. Creativity, Healing, and Shamanism is a 4 day workshop that will lead participants to three objectives on the shaman's trail: education, experience, and encounter. Intentionally primitive, attendees will camp on the earth, gather around the fire, and learn beneath the open sky. This workshop will teach and contrast the Shaman's art of entering sacred space within the framework of traditional shamanism, chaos theory and emerging views in science, and Spiritual traditions from around the world. This workshop does not advance a specific religious perspective but rather explores the common threads woven through many creeds. Attendees will learn by doing as they make their own drums, form a creative community, and engage the power of solitary contemplation and fasting. For 20 millennia droning drums and rattles have guided seekers to the sacred space between creation and the formless.
Becoming a shaman one treads a path of experiential learning. Creativity, Healing, and Shamanism is a 4 day workshop that will lead participants to three objectives on the shaman's trail: education, experience, and encounter. Intentionally primitive, attendees will camp on the earth, gather around the fire, and learn beneath the open sky. This workshop will teach and contrast the Shaman's art of entering sacred space within the framework of traditional shamanism, chaos theory and emerging views in science, and Spiritual traditions from around the world. This workshop does not advance a specific religious perspective but rather explores the common threads woven through many creeds. Attendees will learn by doing as they make their own drums, form a creative community, and engage the power of solitary contemplation and fasting. As a participant in this workshop, you will follow the stages of the creative process to explore a new paradigm for an ancient art, to experience a connection to your faith, nature's spirits, and to evoke the creativity and healing of your inner shaman.
