Shakespeare Theatre Troupe “Tucson teens exploring classic literature through performance.” Welcome! STT was founded in 2002 to give Tucson’s homeschooled teen and pre-teen students the unique opportunity not only to study and perform some great classic plays, but to explore the more challenging roles normally reserved for adult actors. Since then, we’ve expanded to include several students from local high schools who are looking for additional acting and educational opportunities involving classic plays. Before our productions ever reach the stage, our teen and pre-teen performers study as many aspects of the plays as possible, from history and psychology to drama and stagecraft, stunts and, in some cases, even dance and music, allowing them a more exciting, multi-disciplinary experience than simply reading the plays on their own. But our mission does not stop there. To the extent we can, we like to include the audience in every production. Unlike the distant bellowing and strutting that some people associate with Shakespearean theatre, we bring the action right to you. We hope you enjoy this “hands-on” approach to the classic plays as much as we do.

// COUNTER: News and Information Release Date: September 10, 2003 Day Tour Offered of Shakespearean Theatre, and Midland/Odessa Attractions Sept. 14
A one-day tour for theater lovers is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 14, to the Globe Theatre in Odessa as part of a travel program sponsored by Angelo State University's Division of Continuing Studies.
The "Visit to the Globe Theatre" is scheduled noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $79 per person and includes transportation, all admission fees, play tickets and instruction. In addition to the Globe Theatre in Odessa, stops will include a coffee house and the Centennial Plaza Water Garden in Midland.
Built in the 1960s, Odessa's Globe Theatre is run by a non-profit organization presenting classical and modern plays on an Elizabethan stage. The Odessa structure is a replica of the original Globe Theatre, the home of William Shakespeare's English acting company. The 410-seat, octagonal theater was built to bring a bit of British flair to the West Texas landscape and to provide a proper showcase in which to present the Bard's plays.
Prior to the play, participants will tour a replica of Anne Hathaway's cottage. The replica was built in 1988 across the courtyard from the Globe Theatre and is located on the Odessa College campus. The cottage houses the Anne Hathaway Library which contains displays of special interest to Shakespeare fans.

These stunning recreations celebrate the recent opening of the new Globe Theatre in London, and show how stimulating Shakespeare's work can be when experienced in context. The programs will:
    • Help students to experience Shakespearean theatre and language in an authentic setting Demonstrate drama as theatre, not merely text. Put the drama on social context, where students can see how theatre became an agent for linguistic change and development. Illustrate the conventions of Elizabethan theatre.

    1. The Audience
Alan Davies introduces the theme and we see footage of the new Globe's 1997 production of Henry V, showing the actors and audience interacting. Alan talks about Shakespeare's audience, then appears in period costume, as a barman in a tavern in 1599, observing the customers as they watch a troupe of traveling players. Two members of the audience talk about contemporary issues, such as the Plague and the Puritans' attacks on the new theatres. These two characters move on to talk about the experience of going to the theatre the crowds and the cost (one penny). They talk about what people enjoy about the theatre, such as seeing how Kings and Queens behave, witnessing murders and seeing their 'betters' mocked.

David Fanstone’s verse play takes as its starting point the fact that Henslowe’s Diary includes reference to as play called Love’s Labour’s Won , but that no such script has ever been found. Philip Henslowe was a well-known Elizabethan entrepreneur who undertook a wide range of activities in London: in 1587 he built the Rose, the first theatre on the Bankside and in 1594 he owned the theatre at Newington Butts, to the south of the City of London. In 1600, with Edward Alleyn , his son-in-law and the most famous actor in Elizabethan England (aside from Richard Burbage ), he built the Fortune Theatre and in 1604, again with Alleyn, he purchased the office of the Master of the Game of Paris Garden, where bears were baited . In 1613 they built the Hope Theatre, used for theatre and bear and baiting. Henslowe died in 1616, four months before Shakespeare's death. Henslowe's Diary was kept from 1592 to 1603 and contains a welter of useful information about the Elizabethan stage, including performance lists, records of transactions with players and playwrights, and details about costumes and props. On his death, the diary passed to Alleyn, and is now kept in the library of Dulwich College, founded in 1619 by Alleyn who had made his fortune in the theatre business.

All sub-projects aim at defining the surplus of meaning gained by focussing on the dynamic process character and the materiality of the body in various modes of representation. Performance always involves the embodiment of language and the fashioning and display of the body and its affects. The projects thus share the anthropological focus on how early modern distinctions of race, rank/estate and gender are inscribed in, and performed by, the body.
    SUB-PROJECTS:
Performances of Mourning in Early Modern English Theatre and Culture
This study sets out to conduct an anatomy of mourning by investigating textual representations and public spectacles which traditionally signify, the personal emotion of grief. Convergences and potential differences between the inward feeling and the outward features that denote the mourner make this a contested field of political performances. The modes and memories of mourning are studied through their various manifestations in history plays, epitaphs, laments, revenge tragedies, social rituals and funeral practices in the transitional period from the Tudor to the Stuart monarchy.
