28. John Barrymore, Shakespearean Actor Reviews
Fluent, incisive, meticulous, faithful to fact Michael Morrison charts this actor s distinguished contribution to shakespearean theatre tradition.
http://www.shakespearean.com/Reviews.htm
Advance Praise Michael Morrison has done the impossible. He has written an exciting, colorful Barrymore book, without resorting to old wives' tales and innuendo. Truth in his lively retelling is indeed stranger and far more satisfying than fiction. -James Kotsilibas-Davis, author of Great Times Good Times: The Odyssey of Maurice Barrymore
" ... a fresh perspective of the extraordinary man, John Barrymore. Fluent, incisive, meticulous, faithful to fact - Michael Morrison charts this actor's distinguished contribution to Shakespearean theatre tradition. Richly researched with a superb, sustained quality of writing. The fascination is endless." -William Luce, author of the play Barrymore
"Michael Morrison's most readable study vividly recreates act-by-act the Shakespearean art of one of America's most charismatic and influential modern stage actors." -Margot Peters, author of The House of Barrymore
Winner of the 1998 Special Jury Prize for Distinguished Achievement for an Outstanding Book in the Area of Theatre Studies, Theatre Library Association
Reviews "Few performances of Shakespeare in this century broke as much new ground as Barrymore's 1922 version of 'Hamlet,' a galvanic production that almost single-handedly dragged the English-speaking world's understanding of the Bard into the modern age. The astonishment felt by critics and audiences in America and England is expertly evoked by Michael Morrison in his engrossing book 'John Barrymore, Shakespearean Actor,' which not only offers scene-by-scene descriptions of Barrymore's performances . . . but puts Barrymore's acting feats into historical, cultural, and biographical context. . . . 'John Barrymore, Shakespearean Actor' is a book that should delight theatre scholars [and] the general reader as well."

The Utah Shakespearean Festival is widely recognized as one of the best professional theater events in the nation; in 2000, it was awarded the Tony Award for "Outstanding Regional Theater". The Festival is a grand event that includes not only Shakespeare and contemporary productions, but also the Greenshow, the Royal Feaste, seminars, classes and tours. The Plays Six plays are presented each Summer Season in two grand theaters: the outdoor Adams Shakespearean Theatre, which is a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and features only Shakespeare plays; and the indoor Randall L Jones Theatre, a modern facility that features contemporary works. In the Fall, the Festival presents three more world-class plays, including one Shakespeare play, a musical and a comedy. The Royal Feaste, Backstage Tours and Seminars Indulge in the fun of a four-course meal at The Royal Feaste, eaten in the style of renaissance noblemen. It's a magical world of color, light, music and dance. The Royal Feaste is available during the Summer Festival season. Reservations are required and can be made at the Festival Box Office. The Backstage Tour is an opportunity to step behind the scenes to learn inside information about the Festival and visit various production areas, including costume, makeup, and scene shops. Patrons can also attend one of the Literary Seminars to participate in lively give-and-take discussions between the play directors and audience members (sometimes actors will be present). Participants are encouraged to voice honest reactions to various aspects of the plays. Seminars take place in the Seminar Grove, Tuesday through Sunday.

Early English productions
Chronologically, the account must begin with productions of the most obvious and culturally uncomplicated sort, in 'garrison theatres' catering to the British colonists. Theatres were built in the major centres of trade and empire, and Shakespeare provided a prestigious part of the repertory. Shakespeare performances by English troupes in Mumbai (Bombay) date from 1770. In Kolkata (Calcutta), then the capital of British India, the earliest recorded performance is of Othello at the Calcutta Theatre in the Christmas season of 1780. Over the next eight years, the same venue saw Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III and Henry IV . Performances continued till the mid-19 th century, chiefly at the Chowringhee and Sans Souci Theatres. Touring companies become prominent only in the heyday of the Raj, from the late 19 th century. The earliest notable tours were by the Lewis Theatre Company in the 1870s and Maurice E. Bandmann's Company in the 1880s. One event stands out in retrospect. In August 1848, Baishnab Charan Addy, an Indian actor, played Othello at the Sans Souci Theatre, Kolkata. Notices in the English press ranged from the patronizing to the offensive or hostile. Yet many Indian accounts, then and later, have seen the event as a cultural statement, even a cultural triumph, of the colonized Bengali.

CEDAR CITY, UT It's been over four decades since a shrewd young theatre professor by the name of Fred Adams made a simple observation then took a chance that would change the face of his community and the future of tourism in the scenic southwest. His observation: that the southwestern corner of Utah is home to the most spectacular scenery on earth. The chance he took: that some of the people who enjoy the nearby national parks during the day would like to see something equally rewarding at night. In his mind, nothing matched the majesty of southwest Utah's Color Country as well as the theatrical masterpieces of William Shakespeare. Ever since the early days of the railroad, Cedar City has been the jump-off point for visitors to the largest concentration of national parks, monuments, and scenic attractions in the United States. Zion, Bryce Canyon, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef, Cedar Breaks National Monument and countless lesser-known scenic marvels are all within driving distance of Cedar City. Like all residents, Fred C. Adams knew the important role that thousands of visitors to the parks each summer played in the community. But he saw something more: the chance to build a career in theatre and to raise his family in a town he loved. Forty-three years later, attendance to the parks has climbed into the millions, and the Utah Shakespearean Festival Adams founded has grown into a Tony award winning theatre festival. And just as Fred C. Adams determined in 1962, the ideal finale to a day of breathtaking scenery is an evening of world-class theatre.

IT-based aids could bring new possibilities to strengthen creativity, the ability to communicate and to improve memory skills for people in general and for people with special needs in particular. In this project we use Perceptually-Seductive Technology (PST), such as for example virtual and augmented reality, to engage and motivate pupils and to support their memory, learning and personal creativity. Memory is an important part of everyday creativity. Methods and tricks to improve memory have been known since ancient times. For example, when the old Greeks where supposed to give long talks they memorised different parts of the talk in a specific order in a familiar real or imaginary place, known as a memory theatre. The Classroom and the Memory Theatre are based on the same basic principle, namely to support memorability by storing information in different formats, for example text, pictures or events, in different places in a theatre. In this case, though, the theatre is created on the computer screen using virtual reality (VR) techniques. Illinois Shakespeare Festival Marks Its 25th Season
The Illinois Shakespeare Festival marked its 25th anniversary in 2002. The festival was founded in 1978 as a cooperative community outreach effort between the Department of Theatre and the College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University. Located on the grounds of Ewing Manor in Bloomington, the festival began as a summer educational program for theatre students. In 1978 the festival presented 21 performances to just over 6,500 patrons. Calvin Lee Pritner, at that time the chairperson of the Department of Theatre, served as the artistic director in that first season and continued until 1990. In 1991 theatre faculty member John Sipes was appointed artistic director, serving in that capacity until 1995, when Cal MacLean took the position. MacLean now directs a season that includes 40 performances attended by more than 16,000 patrons.

Kim, the "in charge artist" touches up the set prior to curtain time on the set of Henry IV, in the Adams Shakespearean Theater. H e would have been 432 years old this Spring. And if William Shakespeare could celebrate his life's anniversary in the Adams Shakespearean Theatre, he would think he was back inside his beloved "wooden O," the Globe Theatre. O.K., maybe you couldn't fool the Bard, but the thousands of visitors to Cedar City's annual Shakespearean Festival can't help but feel entirely immersed in the Elizabethan era. Built in 1977, the Adams Shakespearean Theatre in Cedar City, Utah, is an outdoor playhouse and "is one of the few theatres in the world that probably come close to the design of Shakespeare's Globe." So much in fact, that the British Broadcast Corporation used it to film parts of it's Shakespeare series in the 1980's. It accommodates 777, plus 40 gallery-bench seats. Audience Development Director, Donna Law says, "It started with people sitting on the lawn in folded chairs. It transformed into this fabulous venue, and there's not a bad seat in the house" The Festival's indoor playhouse, The Randall L. Jones Theatre, is a work of art itself. The hand-laid gold leaf that adorns the balcony is a reflection of the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail that filters throughout the Festival. Justifiably, the theatre was featured prominently in the August 1990 edition of Architecture magazine.

The Utah Shakespearean Festival, founded by Fred C. Adams, is located on as well as adjacent to the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City. Each summer it typically presents three plays of Shakespeare and, with the addition of a second theater, other plays from world drama. The idea of a Shakespearean center located on the Southern Utah University campus was being developed as early as 1960. The first plays were performed in 1962 on a makeshift stage outside under pine trees and stars. The performers and technicians were college students, teachers, and Cedar City townspeople. The first season lasted one week. The goals of the Shakespearean Festival from the beginning have been to present quality productions of Shakespeare's plays for Utah residents and visitors and to educate young students about the pleasures and values of Shakespeare's and other dramatists' work.
