Subscribe Unsubscribe Government refutes Opposition’s campaign of lies in Parmalat scandal Amidst a continuing Opposition campaign to implicate the Seychelles Government and Cosproh chairman Mukesh Valabhji in the Italian Parmalat scandal, the Government this week went a step further to refute allegations and set the records straight. In a statement issued from State House, the Seychelles Government states categorically that neither the Government nor Mr Valabhji can be held responsible if Vacanze and its owners Parmatours – subsidiaries of Parmalat - were irregular in their dealings. The statement coincides with a move on Thursday March 25, by Milan prosecutors to bring charges against Parmalat founder Calisto Tanzi, other members of his family and an inner circle of company executives for their part in one of Europe’s biggest corporate fraud scandals.

Government and Politics
Between 1979 and 1993, Seychelles was governed under a single-party socialist system. President René, who had assumed power in a military coup d'état in 1977, had been the sole candidate in the presidential elections of 1979, 1984, and 1989, each time winning an affirmative vote of more than 90 percent. The SPPF agreed to relinquish its monopoly of power in December 1991 when a party congress approved René's proposal to allow other political groups to be registered. Groups receiving sufficient popular support were permitted to take part in revising the constitution. A first effort to produce a new constitution failed in a referendum in November 1992, but after further negotiations constitutional changes were approved the following June. Multiparty elections followed in July 1993 in which René and the SPPF were again victorious. Governmental System, 1977-93

Flag of Seychelles Background:
Some say that the uninhabited islands of Seychelles were sighted by Vasco de Gama in 1502, however recorded landings did not occur until 1609. In 1756 the French made a formal claim to the islands.
Settlement began in 1778 under a French military administration but barely survived its first decade.
A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to the latter. Seychelles and Mauritius were given to England by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. During the 19th century, chinese and indian tradesmen, together with former slaves settled in the island. They founded their own colony seperated from the Crown in 1903. Seychelles became independant and members of the Commonwealth in 1976 Socialist rule was brought to a close with a new constitution and free elections in 1993. .

PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE UNITED NATIONS DURING THE GENERAL DEBATE OF THE 56TH SESSION
OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
    NEW YORK, NY
    16 NOVEMBER 2001
    Mr. President,
    Excellencies, Distinguished delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen, My delegation congratulates you for your dynamic stewardship of the deliberations of the present session of the General Assembly. Our felicitations also go to the Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, and the United Nations on being honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. The brutal and tragic events that took place in New York, Washington and Philadelphia on September 11th were acts not only against the United States, but against the international community at large. Mr. President, The Seychelles Government agrees on the following principles:
-Terrorism is a threat to international peace and security. There is no political or religious justification for such violence. We vigorously condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
    - Further to the events of September 11th, Seychelles recognizes the right of the US Government to react, under guiding principles of international law, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

1998 data The Seychelles islands, that lie 5 degrees south of the equator in the Indian Ocean, were discovered by the Portuguese. They were occupied by pirates until the French took over in the 18th century and then by the British in the 19th until 1976, when they became independent. The beaches are beautiful with huge boulders breaking the monotony of flat expanses of sand. The Seychelles deserve their reputation for beauty but they are so expensive that I really cannot recommend them to shoestring travellers who don't care for the snob value of "having been to the Seychelles". CIA Country Reports Lonely Planet Traveldocs
The Seychelles offer fewer underwater diving sites than the Maldives but they are said to be just as beautiful. I did not verify that because the cheapest rate I found was 60 $US per dive, more that twice what I paid in the Maldives and four times the rate in Sri Lanka
The size of the Ministry of Tourism, the yellow building behind this modern sculpture at the eastern end of Independence Avenue, gives you an idea of the importance given to that industry by the Seychelles government.
