Seychelles Tours Overview
Photo courtesy of Simon Carey The Seychelles may be the only country described exclusively in hyperbole. "Paradise," "Garden of Eden" and "spectacular" seem to be among the most common terms employed. We can confirm that the hyperbole is well earned, but what impresses us most has to do with people, not scenery. We're convinced that one reason everyone comes back raving about the Seychelles (pronounced

GEOGRAPHY Seychelles is located in the Indian Ocean about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) east of Kenya. The nation is an archipelago of 115 beautiful, tropical islands with two distinct collections of islands, some comprised of granite and others of coral. The Mahe Group consists of 42 granite islands, all within a 56-kilometer (35 mi.) radius of the main island of Mahe. These islands are rocky, and most have a narrow coastal stripe and a central range of hills rising as high as 914 meters (3,000 ft.). Mahe is the largest island9,142 sq. km (55-sq. mi.)and is the site of Victoria, the capital. The coral islands are flat with elevated coral reefs at different stages of formation. They have no fresh water and can sustain human life only with difficulty. Official Name: Republic of Seychelles

News Sussex students discover new species of spider in the Seychelles As film buffs queue to watch the new Spider-man movie, geography students from the University of Sussex have gone one better by discovering a new species of spider in the wild. The second year undergraduates were taking part in a field course to the Seychelles, one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet. As part of this trip the students were responsible for helping to set insect traps in the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Praslin, the second-largest island in the main Seychelles group. An undisturbed tract of palm forest, the area is renowned for being home to the remarkable Coco de Mer double coconut, as well as vanilla orchids and a host of rare birds and lizards. Because of its fame, the site is frequently visited by biologists and, as a result, is one of the most-sampled places on the islands. Students explore the Vallée de Mai, Seychelles The flora and fauna of the valley is incredibly diverse, and currently forms part of a study being undertaken by the Nature Protection Trust of the Seychelles (with whom the students were working) as part of their conservation work on the islands. To the delight of the students, the contents of the insect traps revealed a species of spider that is completely new to science. Named

Later on during the 16th century the islands were frequented and some were even named by the Portuguese. In 1742 the French took possession of Seychelles, and they landed on Ste Anne Island to start permanent settlement in 1770. They ruled Seychelles for 40 years. In 1771, a year after settling in, Pierre Poivre started the first plantation industry in Seychelles with a view to compete with the Dutch in the European spice trade. During that period Seychelles was also being used as a transit point for slaves from Africa, India, Madagascar and other countries. A few were retained here to work for their masters. The geographical location of Seychelles also made it ideal for both the French adn the British during their respective reign of the islands to send all those who they wanted to get rid off for various reasons (Isolation, punishment). To name just a few the Dauphin of France, Louis XVII, son of Louis XVI, King Prempeh of Ghana, the archbishop Makarios of Cyprus (later upon his return to his country became the President of Cyprus).
