Geography of Seychelles
Seychelles is located in the Indian Ocean about 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) east of Kenya . The nation comprises an archipelago of 115 tropical islands with two distinct collections of islands, some granite and some of coral . The Mahe Group consists of 40 granite islands, all within a 56-kilometer (35 mi.) radius of the main island of Mahe. These islands are rocky, and most have a narrow coastal stripe and a central range of hills rising as high as 914 meters (3,000 ft.). Mahe is the largest island 9,142 sq. km (55-sq. mi.) and is the site of Victoria, the capital. The coral islands are flat with elevated coral reefs at different stages of formation. They have no fresh water and can sustain human life only with difficulty. Precipitation Location: Eastern Africa , group of islands in the Indian Ocean , northeast of Madagascar Geographic coordinates: 4 35 S, 55 40 E

Field Classes Seychelles Field Class 2002 In March 2002 an intrepid group of Geography students from the University of Sussex visited the Seychelles for the first time. Here are some of the things they got up to (and don't forget to enter the competition at the end...): La Passe on Silhouette, our home for the first 10 days. The island was considered to be so remote that it was used as a location for the Spanish version of Survivor. The locals liked the pier so much that they asked the TV company to leave it behind once they'd finished filming (whereas we just liked to swim off it...). We arrived on Silhouette by boat (trying not to run over too many flying fish on the way...) Our accommodation can be seen in this shot, nestling amongst the palms next to the old Colonial Plantation House. If you look very closely, you can just make out Sussex Faculty swinging in their hammocks... Whilst on the island, much of our fieldwork involved trekking into the tropical forest, where the unique biodiversity of the tropics revealed itself in myriad ways... Giant millipedes are one expression of evolutionary processes operating within tropical island ecosystems, as are giant tortoises (some of which may be over 150 years old), which can be seen roaming parts of Silhouette. Having seen a thing or two in their time, one or two were not above commenting on the fashion sense of certain students...

    http://www.geog.susx.ac.uk/admissions/fieldclasses.html
Admissions Field Classes Introduction Field classes are an essential and stimulating part of all Geography degrees at Sussex. They provide students with essential practical experience in recording and analysing natural geographical features - landforms, landscapes, settlements, agricultural patterns and the like - and they help develop students' skills in teamwork and independent thought. Equally important, the field classes serve to illustrate geographical ideas and methods introduced during lectures, seminars and tutorials. First-year students participate in a Sussex-based field weekend, learning about and exploring Brighton and the surrounding landscape. Excursions may visit the Sussex coastline, the Ashdown Forest and follow the Greenwich Meridian. A particular highlight of Geography degrees at Sussex is the second-year field class. Sussex is unusual amongst British universities in offering four or five field classes each year, the majority to distant and fascinating locations. Recent destinations have included Thailand, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Morocco, Canada, Los Angeles, France and Ireland. To help defray costs, Geography at Sussex provides each student with a subsidy towards part of the field class.
Recent Field Class Destinations IRELAND FIELD COURSE
(Physical/Environmental/Human Geography) The first half of this field course is based in the centre of the economically and culturally booming city of Dublin, where students undertake projects on the city's heritage and experiences of migration. An historic walking tour of the city centre and a lecture from a representative of the Dublin Civic Trust on conservation, heritage and redevelopment, are included.

    History
Though the islands may have been known to Arab traders, they lay undiscovered until chartered by the Portuguese in the early 16 th century. The first recorded landing was by the British East India Company in 1608, but it was the French who first lay claim to the islands in 1756 and settled in 1770. At the conclusion of the Napoleonic wars, Mauritius was ceded to Britain together with its dependencies including Seychelles. In 1903, Seychelles became a separate crown colony. The International Airport opened in 1971 and Seychelles obtained from Britain its independence in 1976 . It has a multi-party democratic constitution, and the current Head of State is President France Albert Rene.
    Geology
Two hundred million years ago, the supercontinent of Pangaea united all the world’s land masses. As these slid apart, Pangaea was wrenched into two, with Laurasia to the north and Gondwanaland to the south. Gondwana split in two also and later India and Madagascar separated from Africa. At the apex where these last three land masses met, a fragment of Eden was cast adrift. These are not just the only granite islands in the world, they are also the oldest islands of any ocean. For all but the tiniest fraction of their history, they lay forgotten and untouched. Now they may be visited and acclaimed by the world for what they are, a unique paradise. In addition, a string of perfect islands and coral atolls lie beyond the granitic group and form part of Seychelles. These include

    76. Geography
The Republic of seychelles consists of over 116 islands scattered over 1 million square kilometres of sea in the middle of the Western Indian Ocean.
    http://www.seychelles.net/misdstat/Geography.htm
The Republic of Seychelles consists of over 116 islands scattered over 1 million square kilometres of sea in the middle of the Western Indian Ocean. The Seychelles archipelago is divided into two distinct collections: the Mahe group, 43 islands in all, granitic with high hills and mountains and the outlying islands; and the corralline group numbering 73 or more and for the most part only a little above sea-level. Mahe the most important island lies between 4 degrees south latitude and 55 degrees east longitude.
It is 27 kms long and 11kms wide rising abruptly from the sea to a maximum altitude of 905 meters in the mountain of Morne Seychellois. Two other islands of major importance as regards to size and population are Praslin, 33.6 kms from Mahe , and home to the unique Coco de Mer and La Digue 48 kms away, with its bullock cart transport and the only remaining sanctuary of the veuve- the Seychelles Black paradise flycatcher. In spite of the close proximity of Seychelles to the Equator, the climate is healthy. The shade temperature varies little throughout the year and the hottest months being March to April and the coolest being July and August. The rainfall varies considerably from island to island and from year to year. Most of the rainfall occurs during the hot months when the northwest trade winds blows. The islands are outside the hurricane zone and thunder storms are rare and mild when they do occur.
There is some evidence that Seychelles islands were known and visited as long ago as the 8th and 9th centuries. More recently in the 15th and 16th centuries, they were spasmodically inhabited by pirates but it was not until the middle of the 18th century that the first settlers established themselves on Ste Anne in 1771.
