Culture
There is no indigenous culture in the Seychelles, but aspects of African origin have survived. The government has formed the National School of Music and the National Cultural Troupe to foster a Cr©ole cultural identity and tradition. The sombre moutia is the typical dance of the Seychelles, with strong African and Malagasy rhythms. The songs are prayers which the slaves turned into work chants, and they're accompanied by slow, repetitive dance routines. The moutia is one of those participatory affairs, where everyone has to get up and join in. Seychellois music is a blend of Indian, European, Chinese and Arabic - accordions, banjos and violins blend with the makalapo , a stringed instrument, the zez , a sitar, African skin drums and the bom , a bowed instrument. Most Seychellois are Catholic and the majority are avid churchgoers, but there is a widespread belief in the supernatural and in the old magic of spirits known as gris . Sorcery was outlawed in 1958, but there are a number of bonhommes and bonfemmes di bois practising their cures and curses and concocting potions for love, luck and revenge.

In a place where you can cast a net and come up with “dinner” and climb a tree to pick a snack, the culinary arts have evolved to produce flavors pleasing to both basic and sophisticated tastes. The extraordinarily unique island Creole style merges French, African, Chinese, Indian and English heritages. Blending spices and curries, with locally abundant coconut milk and breadfruit, and varieties of flavorful seafood, the Seychellois have refined meal preparation to a celebration of the best their islands can offer. Fish is plentiful, varieties are abundant and it is always an excellent menu selection. Typical fish delicacies include succulent red snapper ("bourzwa"), tuna steaks unlike any elsewhere, kingfish and, if you're lucky enough to find it, fillets of parrot fish with the most tender of meats. Smoked sailfish is a common appetizer; the wafer thin slices make up a refreshing salad and is a tropical version of smoked salmon.

Country Info Seychelles Introduction Seychelles General Data Seychelles Maps Seychelles Culture ... Seychelles Time and Date Seychelles Culture Back to Top Several indexes of social status operate. The first is color. Although almost all Seychellois are so racially mixed as to defy classification, light skin remains a status feature because authority in Seychelles has been traditionally vested in a white plantation owner or manager, or later in British officials. Skin color, according to anthropologist Burton Benedict, is distinguished in Seychelles by the terms blanc (white), rouge (red), or noir (black), all of which are applied relatively depending on the speaker's own pigmentation. Economic achievement and material possessions are equally important signs of social status. According to Benedict, Seychellois are highly status conscious and are anxious to improve their social positions. Possessions, particularly land and substantial homes, are important indicators of status and prestige. Fine clothing, cars, jewelry, and watches are similarly regarded. A willingness to spend freely is, among men, a means to impress others. Persons with light skin enjoy greater prestige, but the skin shade does not reliably determine social status or position of power in society. Lighter-skinned persons find it easier to advance to managerial or supervisory positions. It is considered advantageous to marry a lighter-skinned person, although a wealthier man of dark skin or a darker-skinned woman with property may not experience such discrimination. Social tensions based on race are almost unknown, and persons of differing racial types mix freely in schools, business, and social gatherings.

Seychelles History
That tourism is still in its developing stages shouldn't come as a surprise - the Seychelles' history as an inhabited land is rather short (pirates first found it 400 years ago). The first settlers arrived from France in the 1770s and turned the islands into a small slave colony. After the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, the Seychelles became part of the British Empire, where it remained until achieving independece in 1976. Following independence, it became an unlikely player in the Cold War. In 1977, the jet-setting, capitalist prime minister was ousted by a socialist named Albert Rene, who became a client of more powerful Communist regimes. He's still in power, though he's changed his tune a bit, and after rejecting a tourist-based economy, he now embraces it. Seychelles Trip Search

Seychelles Culture - Tourist Information History People Bird Island Praslin Island ... Travel to the Seychelles with Mason Travel The Seychellois are a blend of different nationalities, all of whom have brought their own customs and cultures to the islands. The result is a country steeped in folklore and legends from many continents. From France came Roman Catholicism and of course the language, from Britain a variety of ghost stories and Scottish dancing, from Africa and Madagascar the mysterious 'Gris Gris' magic and the first slaves brought to the islands the music and dance of the Moutia and Sega. It cannot be said that the Seychellois are a fast-living race. From the earliest settlement, the people who have lived on these islands have been characterised by their happy-go-lucky nature. One story is told of a visitor to Seychelles who, remarking on the large quantities of seaweed washed up on the beach, said to a fisherman standing by, "Do you make good use of this seaweed"? To which the fisherman replied, "Of course not - why should we? God didn't give seaweed legs". History People Bird Island Praslin Island ...

Demographics of Seychelles
About 90% of the Seychellois people live on Mahe Island. Most others live on Praslin and La Digue, with the remaining smaller islands either sparsely populated or uninhabited. Most Seychellois are descendants of early French settlers and the African slaves brought to the Seychelles in the 19th century by the British, who freed them from slave ships on the East African coast. Indians and Chinese (1.1% of the population) account for the other permanent inhabitants. About 1,703 (2000) expatriates live and work in Seychelles. Of those, about 35 are from the United States Seychelles culture is a mixture of French and African ( Creole ) influences. Creole is the native language of 94% of the people, however, English and French are commonly used. English remains the language of government and commerce. About 88% of the adult population is literate, and the literacy rate of school-aged children has risen to well over 98%. Increases are expected, as nearly all children of primary school age attend school, and the government encourages adult education Population: 79,326 (July 2000 est.)
