A moral perspective on STDs, which, morality aside, aptly describes the human dilemma permeating this problem. Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs present a unique Public Health problem. Before continuing I wish it to be CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD that I deal with the problem of STDs strictly as a medical and microbial issue and not as a moral, ethical or religious question PREACHING MORALS to them. Let me assure you that the microbes involved are no more interested in our morals than we are the morals of the cow that contributed the meat of a hamburger we've enjoyed recently. The STD microbe's only desire (as is ours) is to survive and reproduce and to do so they will adapt their pathogenic behavior to

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) What are sexually transmitted diseases?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infectious diseases transmitted through sexual contact. They are among the most common infectious diseases with the United States having the highest rates of STDs in the industrialized world. Can STDs be prevented?
Avoiding sexual contact with others is the best method for preventing the spread of STDs. For those who are sexually active, methods that can deter the spread of such diseases include:
    • have a mutually monogamous sexual relationship with an uninfected partner use a male condom use clean needles if injecting intravenous drugs decrease susceptibility to HIV infections by preventing and controlling other STDs delay having sexual relationships as long as possible have regular checkups for STDs learn the symptoms of STDs and seek medical help as soon as possible if notice any symptoms avoid having sexual intercourse during menstruation avoid anal intercourse, or use a male condom

    Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), once called venereal diseases, are among the most common infectious diseases in the United States today. More than 20 STIs have now been identified, and they affect more than 13 million men and women in this country each year. The annual comprehensive cost of STIs in the United States is estimated to be well in excess of $10 billion.
  • STIs affect men and women of all backgrounds and economic levels. They are most prevalent among teenagers and young adults. Nearly two-thirds of all STIs occur in people younger than 25 years of age. The incidence of STIs is rising, in part because in the last few decades, young people have become sexually active earlier yet are marrying later. In addition, divorce is more common. The net result is that sexually active people today are more likely to have multiple sex partners during their lives and are potentially at risk for developing STIs. Most of the time, STIs cause no symptoms, particularly in women. When and if symptoms develop, they may be confused with those of other diseases not transmitted through sexual contact. Even when an STI causes no symptoms, however, a person who is infected may be able to pass the disease on to a sex partner. That is why many doctors recommend periodic testing or screening for people who have more than one sex partner.

Some 56 million Americans have an STD other than AIDS and many more are infected each year. The causative bacterial viral, or parasitic agents are spread primarily by sexual contact, but may also be spread by the use of infected needles. Some STDs are chronic infections, but many can be cured. Quick diagnosis and treatment are often the keys to cure. The only 100% prevention is abstinence. Maintaining faithful monogamous relations with one's spouse is effective, provided both partners are free of STDs. Safe sex (use of a condom ) with a monogamous partner is the next best protection against STDs. Always remember that prevention is better than therapy. Bacterial:
    Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea ("clap"), a common disease worldwide, is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . There are over 650,000 new cases in the U.S. each year. 82% of cases of gonorrhea occur in teenagers and young adults, and females are twice as likely to become infected after one act of intercourse with an infected male as males are after one act of intercourse with an infected female. Gonorrheal infections may be asymptomatic in both sexes.

    Syphilis -the great imitator
Once the single most important disease in dermatology, mid-20th century antibiotics nearly wipe out this spirochete disease. However, the reported incidence of all stages of syphilis increased dramatically from 1985 (28.5 cases per 100,000 population) to 1990 (54.3 per 100,000). It then decreased to 45.3 cases per 100,000 in 1992. Congenital syphilis increased from 1985 (7 per 100,000 live births) to 1990 (91.8 per 100,000 live births), peaked in 1991 (107.2 per 100,000 live births), and then decreased in 1992 (94.3 per 100,000 live births). Over 30,000 new cases of primary and secondary syphilis occur annually, and the prevalence of HIV infection among syphilis-infected individuals increasing. While the Oslo study by Bruusgaard indicated that 60-70% of untreated patients went through life with little or no inconvenience, still, 30-40% suffered serious inconvenience, so that the diagnosis and treatment are very worthwhile. There are essentially three stages in syphilis: the primary (chancre),the secondary (florid rash and dissemination), and the late (gumma

Issues in Brief Sexually Transmitted Diseases Hamper Development Efforts
    I
mproving the health conditions of individuals and families in the developing world has long been a priority for American humanitarian aid. As a result of 30 years of U.S. assistance, maternal and infant death rates have dropped in many regions, significantly more couples are using contraceptives to plan their families and more children are living past their fifth birthday. Nevertheless, despite the tremendous progress brought about by investments in maternity care, family planning, child immunization and better nutrition, one crucial element of maternal and child health has been sorely neglected: the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Historically, STDs have also been overlooked in the global fight against infectious diseases; as a result, they continue to drain the lives of young and old throughout the developing world. STDs are a serious problem not only because they are widespread, but also because they may have delayed, long-term consequences, including poor maternal health, ectopic pregnancy, infant illness and death, cervical cancer, infertility and increased susceptibility to HIV. Millions of men and women suffering these and other effects of STDs are hindered in their ability to provide for their families and contribute to their society. For countries struggling to develop economically, the health and economic costs are immense. The toll of STDs also hampers U.S. international aid. American assistance aimed at improving educational, health and economic conditions overseas becomes less effective, and therefore more costly, when a substantial proportion of recipients are suffering from STDs. Thus, although this is not always well understood by policymakers and the public, the United States has a considerable stake in combating the burgeoning STD epidemic in developing countries. This

The program assists state, local, and community efforts to help prevent the spread of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis, and other STDs. Confidentiality and surveillance
STD reports are strictly confidential. In Nebraska, as in most states, syphilis; gonorrhea; HIV/AIDS ; and chlamydia are reported to the appropriate health department. Laboratories and health care providers provide the health department with information for controlling and preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Prompt reporting and accurate identification is important:
    • for clients that may need treatment, for identifying sex partners who may be infected, and for monitoring disease trends.
    Intervention and prevention activities
Health professionals interview infected people to identify, locate, and treat sex partners, to ensure proper treatment, and to provide information to help prevent reinfection.

The sexually transmitted disease no one talks about
HPV has been around since ancient times, but it often goes undetected
May 2, 2000 BY JULIE SEVRENS
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS When parents talk to their children about the birds and the bees, there's one thing that's rarely mentioned: the human papilloma virus. ABOUT HPV The human papilloma virus is the most common sexually transmitted disease, with about 5.5 million new cases occurring in the United States every year. Here are some other facts about the disease:
  • Nearly three out of four Americans from the ages of 15 to 49 have been infected with HPV. Most have just never known it. The body's immune system often can sufficiently suppress or perhaps even kill the virus on its own.
  • Vaginal, oral and anal sex can all spread the disease, as can skin-to-skin contact in the genital region. Abstinence is the best defense. Condoms offer some protection but, because they do not cover the entire genital area, it is possible to acquire the virus while using them.
  • Most HPV cases are symptomless and often harmless. Of the 70 to 100 strains of HPV thought to be in existence today, just two are responsible for causing genital warts. About a dozen are high-risk strains associated with causing cervical cancer. It is possible to acquire more than one virus strain.
