What are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? Why do women need to be concerned about them?
STDs, once called venereal diseases , are among the most common diseases in the United States. STDs are diseases that you get by having sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal) with someone who already has an STD. Caused by a number of bacteria and viruses , more than 20 STDs affect both women and men. While some STDs can be cured, other STDs are life long (can't be cured). STDs can affect a person's physical health, emotional health, and quality of life. While rare, STDs can cause life-threatening conditions, particularly when they are not treated. Experts believe that having an STD can increase a person's chances for getting infected with HIV , the virus that causes AIDS.

exually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control there are over 15 million cases of sexually transmitted disease cases reported annually. Adolescents and young adults (15-24) are the age groups at the greatest risk for acquiring an STD, 3 million becoming infected each year. Most STDs are treatable. However, even the once easily cured gonorrhea has become resistant to many of the older traditional antibiotics. Other STDs, such as herpes, AIDS, and genital warts, all of which are caused by viruses, have no cure. Some of these infections are very uncomfortable, while others can be deadly. Syphilis, AIDS, genital warts, herpes, hepatitis, and even gonorrhea have all been known to cause death. Many STDs can lead to related conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease cervical cancer , and complications in pregnancy. Therefore, education about these diseases and prevention is important.

    The Sexually Transmitted Disease Epidemic
A major epidemic of sexually transmitted disease (STD) has developed during the last 30 years. In the 1960's syphilis and gonorrhea, both easily treated with penicillin, were the only significant STDs. Today there are over 20 diseases with 12 million newly infected persons each year.(1) It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans is now infected with a viral STD.(2) This does not include the bacterial diseases such as chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea, which are at very high levels. Tragically, 63% of these infections occur in persons under age 25.(3)
    What Is The Cause?
What caused this dramatic change in a period of just 30 years? The answer is simple: increased sexual mixing of the population. As more and more people have multiple sexual partners, the inevitable result is an acceleration in the spread of STD. The problem is compounded by the fact that 80% of the persons infected have no noticeable symptoms(4) and, therefore, cannot know they are contagious.
    The Effect On Young People
Unfortunately, STDs are not equal opportunity diseases. Adolescents have a higher degree of susceptibility than do older people. The ectropion of the cervix of a female teenager is more likely to become infected than that of a woman in her 20's.(5) Indeed, researchers have estimated that a sexually active 15 year old has a 1 in 8 chance of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), but that by age 24 the probability has decreased to 1 in 80.(6) PID is the most rapidly increasing cause of infertility in the United States and is a primary reason for the 600% increase in ectopic pregnancies since 1970.(7)

Friday, 15 December, 2000, 13:11 GMT Unsafe sex 'triggers' more disease Teenage sexual health is declining Complacency over safe sex is being blamed for a dramatic rise in cases of sexually transmitted diseases. According to government figures diagnoses have hit a 10 year high with rates of chlamydia and gonorrhoea in particular rising dramatically since 1995. The number of people visiting Genitourinary medicine clinics (GUM clinics) in the UK has doubled in ten years. Experts warn complacency about safe sex messages had led to the soaring infection rates, particularly among young women and gay men. Sexually transmitted diseases Genital chlamydia - 32,371 cases in 1995, 56,855 in 1999 Gonorrhoea - 10,598 cases in 1995, 16,470 in 1999

    Classification
These diseases can be classified on the basis of either their etiologies or their clinical manifestations. The following table lists an etiologic classification of 23 STDs. Sexual transmission has been implicated as a major factor in the propagation of each of the pathogens. There have been sporadic case reports of sexual transmission of many other pathogenic agents, but the diseases caused by these other agents are not generally considered, since sexual transmission seems to be a minor factor in their propagation. For each of the agents listed in the following table, there are one or more diseases or syndromes known to be caused by the agent, and others (indicated by a question mark) for which a causal association is suspected. The following examples of lesions from STD patients were taken by members of the CUMC Infectious Diseases Division.
