It's been said that adolescents are "hormones with feet." And, according to the most comprehensive US sex survey since the 1948 Kinsey Report*, more than 40% of women and 30% of men aged 18 to 59 regularly have no interest in sex, or have difficulty getting aroused, or can't have an orgasm or suffer from pain during intercourse, Comfort with sex and easy, successful sexual performance between partners are fairly rare. In other words, if you believe you have a problem, there's no need to feel alone and embarrassed. Medical and/or psychological solutions are available. To take an online sexual disorders screening (SDS), click here for women , and click here for men . " SDS is a preliminary screening test for sexual symptoms that does not replace in any way a formal psychiatric or medical evaluation. It is designed to give a preliminary idea about the presence of sexual symptoms that indicate the need for an evaluation by a psychiatrist or a physician." Their clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment must take into account the patient's underlying biology, history, and behaviors. Using an approach pioneered at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Peter Fagan applies the four "perspectives of psychiatry" (disease, dimension, behavior, and life story) to the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders. This book offers therapists an efficient and clinically proven way to organize the range of theoretical methodologies currently available, presenting a framework that is both conceptually cohesive and readily applicable in clinical settings. After an introduction, each chapter offers a case study followed by an analysis based on one perspective methodology as well as a discussion of the clinical implications of that perspective. The book closes with a chapter integrating the approaches. This book will be of interest to mental health care professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, who treat patients with sexual disorders.

The boundary between what is physical and what is psychological becomes blurred. Sexual Dysfunctions are characterized by disturbance in sexual desire and the physical changes that characterize the response cycle of sexual excitation and sexual activity. They are dysfunctions when they case personal distress and/or interpersonal (social) difficulties. They can arise in the area of desire, excitement, orgasm, and/or resolution. They can be of lifelong or acquired duration and can be generalized to many situations or situational and occur only in specific situations. They can be due to psychological factors or due to a combined physical and psychological problem.

Drug treatment for women's sexual disorders is a relatively new field. We will review possible prosexual treatments and will attempt to explain responsible psychophysiological and behavioral mechanisms, to eventually arrive at relevant insight into the workings of the drugs. We begin with a description of what is known about women's sexual disorders and the psychophysiology of women's sexual response. We will briefly consider subjective experience and relevant physiological changes in the domains of behavior, cognition, and emotion, with specific attention to sexuality. This will function as a background for a sketch of drug effects on hypoactive sexual desire, arousal disorders, and inhibited orgasm. The picture we will be sketching is a rather bleak one. There is not much consensus and standardization in any of the separate domains of female sexual dysfunction. Despite steady progress over the past decades, knowledge of female sexual function still seriously lags behind that of male sexual function. With the advent of the new vasoactive drugs, interest in female sexual dysfunction is now rapidly increasing. This upsurge in attention has once again uncovered the lack of consensus and knowledge in the field of female sexuality.

Addictive Sexual Disorders Richard R. Irons, MD Jennifer P. Schneider, MD, PhD Indulgence in the gratification of sexual desires and appetites to excess has been a major subject in literature, myths, and the creative arts from the beginning of recorded history. One example of the hypersexual, predatory male is Don Juan, the legendary lover of many women who suffered a multitude of adverse consequences, including death, as a result of his behavior. He is immortalized as the sexual athlete who worshipped the female body as the ideal object of desire, created for him to be consumed and ravished, and who must make his escape from each woman before potential engulfment by intimacy in relationship. His story was immortalized in the plays of Corneille, Moliere, Shaw, and Rostand, in Byron’s unfinished poem, and in Mozart’s Don Giovanni He has become an infamous symbol for the hedonistic, narcissistic male who engages in recurrent sexual affairs. Women with a culturally defined excessive sexual appetite were given the diagnosis of nymphomania, a term no longer in clinical use.

Sexuality Dr. C. George Boeree Ah, sex. Freud, and many others, felt that sex was the most significant motivator in human life. It's interesting that you die without food in a few weeks, without water in a few days, and without air in a few minutes. You will not die without sex (although you may want to). And yet, in the biological scheme of things, it is reproduction, not individual survival, that counts. Animals, including us humans, are supplied with powerful instincts that urge them on to having sex, sometimes at the cost of their own lives! The science of sex only dates back about a century. The first major figure is Richard von Krafft-Ebing , who studied sexual "deviations" in the late 1800's. He popularized the term homosexuality, and fought to decriminalize it. On the negative side, he was convinced that women who have strong sexual appetites are quite abnormal. Another early figure is Henry Havelock Ellis , who looked into the social aspects of sexuality in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He is a hero to both the homosexual community and the feminist movement. He insisted that homosexuality was both inborn and irreversible, a notion some people still can't seem to accept. And he had the audacity to suggest that women have the similar sexual needs and desires as men! Margaret Sanger referred to him as "Olympian!" Beginning in the 1930's, a Harvard entomologist name

    Updated 09/05/03
DKK 5 mill. for new initiatives regarding sexual disorders in fish
The Danish Minister for the Environment, Hans Christian Schmidt has allocated over DKK 5 mill. (approx. Euro 670,000) to study hormones in the Danish aquatic environment. "We know that there are impacts on fish – but it seems that current measurements cannot reveal the precise causes. This is because the methods of analysis we are applying at the moment are not good enough to measure oestrogen at the low levels that impact fish," said Hans Christian Schmidt. "We must do everything we can to solve the problem of endocrine disruption in fish. At first we must assess the methods of analysis that are most appropriate, so that we have a good foundation to progress. I will ask the Danish EPA to start work immediately, so that mapping can commence as early as this autumn". The strategy for work is made up of three steps:
  • A thorough assessment of the methods of analysis that are best at measuring the very low levels of oestrogen that can affect fish. Mapping of what oestrogen activity is like in the Danish aquatic environment. In addition we need closer studies of the conversion of oestrogen at treatment plants.
