Sexual Disorders Sexual Problems may be classified as physiological, psychological and social in origin. Any given problem may involve all three categories. For example a physiological problem may produce some psychological effects and these may result in some social maladjustment. Physiological problems of a specifically sexual nature are rather few. Only small minorities of people suffer from diseases of or deficient development of the genitalia. Many people however experience at some time sexual problems that are by products of other pathologies or injuries. Fortunately a good number of physiological problems are solved through medication or surgery. Sexual disorders can be classified into four categories: Sexual Desire Disorders Sexual Arousal Disorders Orgasmic Disorders Sexual Pain Disorders 1. Sexual Desire Disorders These involve dysfunctions in sexual desires, interest or drive in which the person experiences a lack of sexual desire or an aversion to genital sexual contact. Lack of Sexual Desire : People who have little or no sexual interest or desire are said to have hypoactive sexual desire disorder. They are also often reported to have an absence of sexual fantasies. Lack of sexual desire does not imply that a person is unable to achieve erection, lubricate adequately or reach orgasm. It can be caused by biological or psychological factors such as hormonal deficiencies, depression, marital dissatisfaction and so on.

Schneider, M.D., Ph.D. ABSTRACT The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) describes certain sexual disorders which are characterized by, or include among their features, excessive and/or unusual sexual urges or behaviors. Common disorders in the differential diagnosis include paraphilias, impulse disorder not otherwise specified (NOS), sexual disorder NOS, bipolar affective disorder, cyclothymic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorder. Infrequent disorders in the differential diagnosis consist of substance-induced anxiety disorder, substance-induced mood disorder, dissociative disorder, delusional disorder (erotomania), obsessive-compulsive disorder, gender identity disorder, and delirium, dementia, or other cognitive disorder. Addictive sexual disorders which do not fit into standard DSM-IV categories can best be diagnosed using an adaptation of the DSM-IV criteria for substance dependence. The need for a classification of mental disorders has been clear throughout the history of medicine, but there has been little agreement on which disorders should be included and the optimal method for the organization. The many nomenclatures that have been developed during the past two millennia have differed in their relative emphasis on phenomenology, etiology, and course as defining features (DSM-IV, Introduction, p. xvi).The third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III, 1980) represented a major advance in the diagnosis of mental disorders and greatly facilitated empirical research.
