Seventh-Day Adventists Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs, as set forth here, constitute the church's understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. Revision of these statements may be expected at a General Conference session when the church is led by the Holy Spirit to a fuller understanding of Bible truth or finds better language in which to express the teachings of God's Holy Word. Beliefs
  • The Holy Scriptures : The Holy Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to man the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are the infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the test of experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the trustworthy record of God's acts in history. (2 Peter 1:20, 21; 2 Tim. 3:16, 17; Ps. 119:105; Prov. 30:5, 6; Isa. 8:20; John 17:17; 1 Thess. 2:13; Heb. 4:12.)
The Trinity: There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:17; Rev. 14:7.)

The book, seventhday adventists Answer Questions On Doctrine was written in 1957 to answer specific questions asked by certain scholars and representatives of other Christian denominations as to what SDAs believe on certain major doctrinal points. It covers only those areas in which other Christians wanted explanation of things they had heard about SDA beliefs.

AN EXPLANATION OF CERTAIN MAJOR ASPECTS OF SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST BELIEF Prepared by a Representative Group of Seventh-day Adventist Leaders, Bible Teachers, and Editors

Reproduced on the At Issue site by permission. The book, Seventh-day Adventists Answer Questions On Doctrine was written to answer specific questions asked by certain scholars and representatives of other Christian denominations as to what we believed on certain major doctrinal points. Thus it does not cover the full spectrum of SDA thought, but only those areas in which other Christians wanted explanation of things they had heard about our beliefs. After lengthy visits between these representatives and leading scholars at General Conference headquarters, the responses to these questions were published in this book and distributed widely to SDA church members. Soon after Questions On Doctrine came out, however, a retired SDA educator who had not been consulted on the book opposed it publicly on the grounds of his understanding of some of the things said about certain aspects of the sanctuary and the nature of the human nature of Christ. As a direct result of the controversy thus stirred up, the book was not reprinted and most persons have had no opportunity to examine it for themselves but are acquainted with it only through quotations and criticisms. It is, however, still used and valued by many SDA scholars, educators, administrators, and pastors, as well as by those laymen fortunate enough to have a copy of their own, and we have had many requests to make it available to online readers. We believe that it will be especially valuable to any who wonder about some of the differences (or perceived differences) between SDA thought and that of other conservative Christians.

Seventh-Day Adventists tend to be extremely anti-Catholic, labeling the Pope the "anti-Christ" and the Holy Catholic Church the "Whore of Babylon" as a virtual Article of Faith. No Seventh-Day Adventist is more industrious in this endeavor than Michael Scheifler of Bible Light His work, 666, The Number of the Beast , is a heroic effort to pin the dreaded number "666" onto the Pope. He lists more than several "titles" supposedly applicable to the Papacy and purporting to add up to 666, including " DUX CLERI translated means Captain of the Clergy" and LUDOVICUS translated means Vicar of the Court." But no purported "title" is more important to Seventh-Day Adventists than Vicarius Filii Dei , as Mr. Scheifler explains in his article, VICARIUS FILII DEI and 666, Response to a Challenge by Patrick Madrid of Envoy Magazine "The phrase was discovered in Catholic Canon Law, in quotes of the Donation of Constantine , which the Catholic Church trumpeted loudly for hundreds of years as absolutely genuine. Knowing this, how can you seriously continue to assert that anti-Catholics have "conjured up the bogus Vicarius Filii Dei canard"? I maintain that every single time a Pope quoted the Donation of Constantine as proof of his temporal authority, or the

    About Seventh-day Adventists
The Seventh-day Adventist Church was founded in the mid-19th century by a group of Christians whose study of the Bible led to a belief in the soon return of Christthe advent. The group members also accepted the teaching of the Seventh-day Sabbath and eventually became known as Seventh-day Adventists. The church formally organized in 1863. Today, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has more than 8 million members around the world, and is especially known for its work in health care and education. The church operates one of the largest Protestant educational systems in the world, comprised of more than 5,000 schools (including more than 90 colleges and universities). As a Seventh-day Adventist college, the beliefs, practices and mission observed at Walla Walla College are rooted in the biblical principles of worship to God and service to mankind. Religion courses are an integral part of the general studies curriculum, and students are required to attend selected worships and weekly chapel services. Optional religious and service activities include small group worships, community outreach and serving as a student missionary volunteer. Observance of the seventh-day Sabbath is a distinctive practice on campus and a key aspect of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. From sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday, there are no classes, and the library and other offices are closed to allow the campus community to observe the Sabbath.

"Are Seventh-Day Adventists Christians or a Cult?"
I have met some folks who are Seventh-Day Adventists. They are a wonderful group of people and appear to know Jesus; however, I definitely do not agree with many of their concepts and would like to get some reliable and scriptural information on this church, if it IS a church. Or is it a cult?
You have raised a very important question. Are Seventh-Day Adventists Christian? Is what they believe consistent with biblical precepts? How do we address members of this group? The adventist movement goes back to the 19th century. In the middle of the century there was widespread expectation that the return of Christ was imminent. A Baptist minister named William Miller was convinced that Jesus was coming sometime between 1843 and 1844. This idea was based on Daniel 8:14, "And he said to me, 'For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.'" He interpreted these evenings and mornings as years, arriving at the date of March 21 of 1843 or 1844. Well, when this date came and went with no appearance by Christ, Miller ended his relationship with the Adventist movement. Others after him, such as Hiram Edson and Ellen G. White, were not so willing to give up just yet. They attempted to reinterpret Miller's prediction according to new revelations. Edson said that Jesus had actually returned in 1844, but His return was different from that expected. He essentially changed "apartments" in heaven, setting up the sanctuary spoken of in Daniel in heaven, where He could begin to evaluate Christians' deeds in order to judge whether they would inherit eternal life. This revelation was called "investigative judgment."
