General information
This page concentrates on links to inter-IC serial buses. When this page talks about 2-wire or 3-wire interfaces, this wire number is the number of control lines. In addition to this those interfaces generally need a common ground, which is the ground plane in circuit board applications and a seprate wire in inter-circuit-board connections. The serial bus interfaces are widely used for interfacing EEPROMs, data converters and many peripheral chips to microcontrollers. They are also often used for inter-microcontroller communication. Serial bus system are also used to build control buses inside equipments like TV receivers, AV amplifiers and cellular phones. The major advantage of usign s serial bus is the small number of wires needed. A major disadvantage of serial interfacing is the tradeoff of speed for space. The processor’s I/O port spends a relatively large amount of time communicating with a serial device. Consequently, serial converters with throughput rates above 500 ksps are uncommon.

General Information: Function and Description : Printed circuit boards are made of strips of multi-layered copper called traces placed by a printing and etching process on flat pieces of fiberglass or other material that is stiff and does not conduct electricity. Through these wires or traces, a CPU talks to memory, expansions boards, keyboards, etc. It communicates via the metal circuitry (metal traces or the silver lines you see) on the motherboard by shooting electrons along the thin metal traces. Instead of connecting each chip to the processor, sharing wires between these elements became the idea for the bus connection. Bus is an communication standard, an agreement about how to build boards that can work with a standard PC. Unfortunately there is more than one standard for many reasons. Basically, a bus is the common pathway across which data travels in a computer. A bus is defined by a set of specifcations. The bus is a series of interconnecting electrical leads which carry signals. The bus design can further be broken down into bus sections. The internal bus (main bus, proccessor bus) section

In particular, accelerating digital data rates make the issue of analog signal integrity more critical than ever before. With ever faster rise times of signal transitions, the analog effects of interconnects begin to dominate system performance. They're no longer restricted to just the transmission medium. Connectors, sockets, pc boards, and other hardware associated with a transmission system are affected as well. Data rates of 10 Gbits/s have become commonplace, and 40-Gbit/s data rates loom on the horizon. In general, testing at high data rates is more difficult than testing at lower data rates. In addition, detecting irregularities in high-data-rate systems becomes more important because the higher data rates tend to enhance and accentuate irregularities in the signal stream. Here, jitter testing becomes a key measurement parameter. The ultimate performance metric for high-speed serial links is the faithful measurement of bit-error rate (BER), which is influenced by the amount of jitter in a system (

The year 2004 sets up as an interesting period for the PC. In the second half of the year, the long-anticipated launch of the first PCI Express products will take place, marking the most significant change in PC architecture in almost 10 years. This remarkable event follows in the footsteps of several other major serial bus transitions, including USB, 1394, and most recently, Serial ATA. PCs have come full circle with respect to I/O. The first serial bus, or RS-232 port, was utilized as the attach point for the slowest of peripheral devices, while the much faster parallel port was reserved for the early era's high-speed components. By nature, the original serial port was limited in bandwidth when compared to its back-of-the-box neighbor, the parallel port. This was due simply to the fact that a single bit was transferred in each direction at a given time versus the eight-plus bits of the parallel port. As frequencies progressed over the years and eventually surpassed the 1-GHz level, skew management of independent signals on the wider buses became a significant challenge. Engineers were forced to create worst-case "windows of time" to allow for the last bit of a given parallel access to reach the register before being latched by the single reference clock. Designers were forced to extend the cycle of the clocking mechanism and slow down the overall transfer. This sharply contrasts what was being done with serial using a dedicated clock for each bit.

New Video and Serial Buses promise much improved performance
by Alan Zisman (c) 1997. First published in Canadian Computer Wholesaler, April 1997 For the past few months, we?ve been looking at up-and-coming hardware changes?ways that the computers that you?ll be selling as 1997 progresses will be ?new and improved? over last year?s models. Not just faster, but implementing new technologies to let users do more in a simpler way than in the turbo-charged super-ATs that we?ve all become accustomed to. We?ve seen how Intel?s MMX chips are adding the first major change to the processor?s instruction set since 1985?s 386. And how USB?Universal Serial Bus?will let users add peripherals with ease. Well, get ready for yet another computer industry three-letter acronym? in this case, AGP. AGP is another Intel innovation?in this case, standing for Accelerated Graphics Port. It?s designed to get around a potential problem with another three-letter acronym from Intel, the PCI bus. The PCI bus is the high-speed internal expansion bus on the current generation of PCs, and now on PowerMacs as well. Its 132 MBps bandwidth provides lots of room for future growth for hard drives, network adapters, almost anything we care to throw at it. Except for video.
