Gun battles in southern Serbia
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia Renewed clashes have broken out between ethnic Albanian rebels and Serb security forces in the buffer zone separating Kosovo from the rest of Serbia. The fighting on Monday, which involved machine-gun and mortar fire, followed the deaths of three Serb policemen who were killed when their jeep hit two anti-tank mines. KFOR officials blame ethnic Albanian separatists for planting the mines, but a rebel commander denied the claim, saying the incident occurred inside Serb-held territory. Serbia to investigate missing assets
Zoran Djindjic has promised not to steal or lie to his people BELGRADE, Yugoslavia New Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic has pledged to investigate the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, tracing money and other assets that belong to the state. Promising his government will hold Milosevic accountable for past crimes, Djindjic took office as the first pro-democracy prime minister since World War II in Yugoslavia's dominant republic of Serbia on Thursday. "We shall not organise a witch hunt, but we won't let the members of the former regime hold on to the assets they plundered from the people," Djindjic said. IN-DEPTH Yugoslavia in Transition

Djindjic's promise came as chief U.N. war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte left Belgrade disappointed on Thursday after Yugoslav leaders rejected her demand that Milosevic be tried by the Netherlands-based court rather than before domestic tribunals. Djindjic, who was sworn in Thursday, wants to see the former strongman on trial in Yugoslavia if not for the four Balkan wars that he triggered, then for years of corruption and economic mismanagement.

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro (AP) Serbians voted for a president for the third time in a year Sunday, hoping that the low turnout that caused two previous elections to fail would not happen again and cause a political crisis. Dragoljub Micunovic, a veteran politician with strong democratic credentials backed by the governing Democrats and their allies, was leading pre-election polls against five other candidates. His main rival, Tomislav Nikolic, an ultranationalist with ties to Slobodan Milosevic, is banking that disillusionment with the democracy will help his cause. The last two elections foundered because turnout was below the 50 percent minimum, and pre-election polls indicated that failure was possible again Sunday due to opposition calls for a boycott and apathy among the 6.5 million eligible voters.

169. Serbian Democracy: First Blow Of The Internet For Democracy And Freedom
short essay
http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/serbia/serbia.html
FREEDOM IN SERBIA AND THE INTERNET
Serbians demand that the authoritarian government of S. Milosevik respect their will.
Tyrants beware!
On Friday February 22, 1997, Belgrade's first non-Communist in a half-century took office after weeks and weeks of protests against the oppressive regime of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevik. "Democracy is sometimes painful, but patience and tolerance, the will of the majority, are bound to win," said Zoran Djindjic, Belgrade's new mayor. Cyberspace became a new weapon in the war for freedom worldwide and was absolutely vital in fighting the oppressive government of Milosevik and his desire to muzzle free speech and thwart the will of the people. We are just beginning to see the beginnings of democracy in Serbia, and Djindjic and his three party coalition with Vuk Draakovic have not been able to peacefully govern together. Serbia is a long way from being a stable liberal democracy, but a start has been made. It all began when Milosevik voided local elections after his party lost them at the beginning of 1997 and thousands of demonstrators for more than three months took to the streets of Belgrade, calling for an end to the longest-ruling authoritarian government in Europe. Students and opposition leaders wanted Milosevic to recognize opposition victories in November elections in Belgrade and 13 other cities and towns. The protesters - mostly students - made great efforts to protest peacefully and not provoke violence with the police as they blocked traffic, pelted government buildings with eggs and rocks, etc. The government attempted to muzzle the independent media and cover up the protests.

Serbia threatens Kosovo crackdown
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia Serb and Yugoslav leaders have vowed to take action against ethnic Albanians after at least 10 Serbs were killed in two separate explosions. Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica said a "series of measures against terrorism" would be made in a Kosovo buffer zone after the UCPMB the Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac were blamed for the attacks. Yugoslav leaders are also calling on NATO-led peacemakers to take action following the remote controlled bus explosion on Friday, which killed seven civilians, and a mine blast which killed three police officers on Sunday. Ethnic Albanian separatists have condemned the deaths and denied involvement in the killings, adding that one of their commanders had been shot dead by Serb police in Lucane, just outside the buffer zone separating Kosovo province and the rest of Serbia. Serb police suspended
BUJANOVAC, Yugoslavia (Reuters) More than 20 policemen in a volatile area of southern Serbia have been suspended by the country's interior ministry for "serious violations of their duty," a defence lawyer has said. The 22 officers serve in the Presevo Valley area close to the border with Kosovo which has a substantial ethnic Albanian population and has seen a series of conflicts between armed Albanians and Serb police over the past year. Ethnic Albanians in the area have long accused Serb police of harassment. Milan Krstic, a lawyer appointed to defend most of the accused officers, said the suspensions gave no specific details about the alleged violations of duty. "In my opinion, all the suspension rulings lack a legal basis and have been brought in an illegal way," Krstic said.
