History of the Archives of Serbia
The idea of the foundation of an archival institution in which the written sources in Serbia would be collected and safeguarded aroused in 1846. Drustvo srpske slovesnosti (today The Serbian Academy of Science and Art) undertook the task of collecting and studying written materials and facts from the recent Serbian history... During the second half of the 19th century several attempts were made proposing that a law on the Archives foundation should be passed; the liberation wars against the Turks, the dynastic differences and financial crises in which Serbia was involved at the time, postponed the foundation of such an institution...
More than fifty years had elapsed since the first attempts, and only 1898 the Assembly of the Kingdom of Serbia passed THE LAW ON THE STATE ARCHIVES.
Beginnings The activities of the State Archives started in 1900 and until 1926, when another State Archives was established in Novi Sad, it had been the only record office of a general type on the territory of the present Republic of Serbia.

The focus of research is on physical remains of old industries, regardless of whether the original production processes are retained or not, while the realms of crafts, non-mechanized manufacture and history of technical sciences are of secondary interest. The research has been conducted for a few years and its current phase could be defined as initial. At this point, the priority is field survey and the formation of a database intended for a future catalogue of industrial heritage. Area The research covers the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Two zones differing in the type and scale of industrial development have been outlined. The divergence is due to different historical backgrounds, i.e. to the fact that present-day Serbia includes the territory of the former Kingdom of Serbia and that of Vojvodina, formerly within Austria-Hungary.

Sources and opinions about Serbian ethnicity of Southern Old Serbia (Stara Srbija) Compiled by Igor Malinovski 1) Around 950,Byzantine Emperor Constantin Porphyrogenitos stated that city of "Ta Serbia" situated north-western from Thesaloniki, has it's name from its Serbian founders (around early 7th century A.D.) and in 10th century that same city is mentioned as "Srpchishte" in the manuscript by the Byzantine author John Zonara. Constantin Porphyrogenitos "De Administrando Imperio" cap.32, pp.152 ed.Bonn
"Starine" 14,1882 pp.16 2) In the year 680 in Bythinia, city of Gordoservon is mentioned whose name is derived from the Serbs resettled in Asia Minor by Byzantine Emperor Constance II from the areas around river Vardar (FYROM) . Isidor, the Episcop of Gordoservon is mentioned in 680/681 and the fact that this town was Episcopal Center gives ground to the thesis that it had large Serbian population. Around year 1200 this city is mentioned as Servochoria (Serbian Habitation) .

... Europe /Serbia and Montenegro SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO History and Government
History: Note: The history of Yugoslavia and the Balkans is exceedingly complex, as it is a region that has long been prey to the ambitions of its neighbours on every side, from the Ancient Greeks to the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the Habsburgs. The occupation of the Balkans by itinerant Slavic peoples was completed by around 650 AD. One of these, the Serbs, came intermittently under the hegemony of the Byzantine Empire. By contrast, Slovenia and Croatia resisted the orthodox Christianity of Byzantium and maintained a Roman Catholic identity. Unity amongst the fractious Serbian clans was not achieved until the end of the 11th century, with the Serbian expansion into Montenegro where the independent state of Zeta was established in 1081. The ground for repeated future conflict was laid at this time largely by the region’s presence as a dividing line between Eastern Orthodoxy and the Western Roman Catholic Church. The 14th century marked the zenith of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which was instrumental in forming national culture and identity. In June 1389, a decisive confrontation took place that would settle the fate of the region for centuries to come and serve as the key symbol in Serbian national consciousness. This was the Battle of Kosovo in southern Serbia, in which an allied force of Serbs and Bosnians was defeated by the advancing Ottoman Turks. Serbia thereafter became an Ottoman vassal state.

    HISTORY
    I. Medieval Serbia
During the A.D. 500's and 600's, various groups of Slavs, including the ancestors of the Serbs, settled in the Balkan Peninsula in the area of present-day Serbia.
Each group had its own leader until the late 1100's, when Stefan Nemanja, a warrior and chief, formed the first united Serbian state. During the 1300's, Emperor Stefan Dusan led the country in successful wars against the Byzantine Empire.
Medieval Serbia had a high political, economic and cultural reputation in Medieval Europe, and reached its apex in mid-14th century. This is the period of the Code, frescoes and the architecture of the medieval monasteries decorating Dusanov Zakonik (Dushan's Code), the greatest juridical achievement of Medieval Serbia, unique among the European feudal states of the period. St. Sava's Nomocanon, Dushan's lands are eternal civilizational monuments of the Serbian citizens. Tzar Stefan Dusan doubled the size of his kingdom seizing territories to the south, southeast and east at the expense of Byzantium.
The Serbian empire began to break up after Tzar Stefan Dusan's death in 1355. He was succeeded by his son Uros called the Weak, a term that could also be applied to the state of the kingdom slowly sliding into feudal anarchy. This is a period marked by the Ottoman Turk sultanate gradually spreading from Asia to Europe and conquering Byzantium first, and then the other Balkan states. The Ottoman Empire, based in what is now Turkey, defeated Serbia in the Battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389. The battle remained of great importance to Serbians for centuries as it basically defined Serbia's fate.

    About us
BRITISH COUNCIL HISTORY SITE OUR HISTORY Our work in Serbia and Montenegro Our first office in old Yugoslavia was opened on 13 January 1940. It was known as the Yugoslav-British Institute and occupied the first two floors of the Anglo-American-Yugoslav club. The Club itself was located in the heart of the town, in the building that is today known as Albanija. At that time we had two main activities: running English language courses and an English kindergarten. During the Second World War the work was disrupted, but was resumed as early as in June 1945. The first British Council Library was set up as part of the operation in 1946. Development of cultural and technical cooperation was also very rapid with first exchanges and visits taking place in 1947 (See picture on the left). Having moved premises several times and having had our office and library separated for almost 40 years, we settled into our current building on Terazije Street in January 2001. It is now some 100 metres away from the place where the first office began work as part of the Yugoslav-British Institute. In Montenegro the British Information Centre, a joint venture between ourselves and the British Embassy, was opened in November 1994 in the basement of the National Library in Podgorica. An independent office and library were set up in a new location (near the Crna Gora hotel) in April 2000. A change of focus from information to project work led to the move to current premises in July 2003.
