Contents IK Monitor 6(2) IKDM Homepage ikdm@nuffic.nl Editorial ‘Learning to listen is one of the most valuable lessons to be learned’, say the authors of the first article in this IKDM, quoting R. Chambers. The quote refers to the use of participatory rural appraisal methods among the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska (USA), where it is shown that the approach can be tailored to fit the needs of almost any community. The first thing that Marcella Szymanski, Lisa Whitewing and Joe Colletti learned when they stopped to listen was that direct participation in a group environment would not work. In their case, an indirect approach worked much better. By combining listening with looking and being sensitive to the community’s culture, insight was gained that resulted in community solutions to problems associated with community-driven land use. We use all of our senses to learn about the external world–sight, hearing, and even smell, taste and touch. In her article ‘ Learning local knowledge of soils: a focus on methodology ’, Deirdre M. Birmingham describes using participant observation to elicit local knowledge of soils from representatives of two ethnic groups in two different ecological zones of West Africa. The two groups, the Bété and the Senufo, taught her to use all her senses, including touch and smell, when identifying soils. She carefully reports her experiences.

Chapter Three: An Introduction to Colono Ware
Colono Ware is concentrated in certain areas of the Southeast. Much of the Colono Ware in the United States comes from Florida, from Spanish-Native American settlements, and from South Carolina, from plantation contexts. Colono Ware from Virginia and Maryland occurs less often, and Colono Ware is rarely found in Georgia (Ferguson 1992b:36-37). Scholars theorize that the lack of Colono Ware in Georgia is due to the different origins of slaves brought there, possibly from African locations where there was little history of pottery making (William H. Adams, 1995, pers. comm.), or the fact that slavery began later in Georgia. In Virginia, European forms of Colono Ware such as plates, pipkins, teapots, and chamber pots are common (Ferguson 1992b:44-48). Much of the Virginia Colono Ware was burnished, apparently to give it a smooth, thin appearance. Attached handles and notching, scalloping, and fluting on vessel rims are all reminiscent of the decorative techniques found on imported European ceramics (Ferguson 1992b:52). Evidence for plantation manufacture of Colono Ware in Virginia is rare, suggesting that much of it was manufactured by Native Americans and traded. However, Ferguson (1992b:49-50) cautions that African Americans were present in many Native American communities, and their influence on pottery should not be discounted. Other Colono Wares, sometimes called

HISTORY 6500 "Contemporary Africa"
Fall 2000
Instructor: Jay Spaulding
Dear Friends,
Greetings, and welcome to this course! Few subjects offer richer possibilities for discovery and the achievement of insight than does the examination of contemporary Africa. During our time together we will encounter Africa through the sharing of responses to some directed readings and via discussion of internet research. We will attempt to identify and learn to appreciate some African perspectives toward key issues, and to assess the opportunities and limitations of alternative courses of action by African political leaders.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Regular class attendance and participation; alert yourselves to news from Africa.
  • Obtain, read, and be ready to discuss in class the following required textbooks:
  • Global Studies, Africa.
A compact reference work useful for this course.
  • Basil Davidson, Modern Africa.
A short narrative history by a European apologist.

Lincoln Town Gyros , in Illinois. 'Legions of corner grills serve up great gyros or burgers. The genius at Lincoln Town Gyros who decided to combine the two should get a key to the city. While a third-of-a-pound burger sizzles on the grill, the counterman slices off a good six or seven strips of gyro meat from the round. On request, he places these next to the grilling burger to give the gyro a little extra char. The patty is then placed on a bun, topped with tomato, onion, pickle and a ladle of cheese sauce (or a slice of American or Swiss). Finally, saints be praised, the counterman crowns the works with the gyro strips and gyro sauce ... '
