Youth and Seniors:
Science Discovery Workshops An intergenerational program that trains local volunteers to involve students in science investigations in biology, health, and physical science.
2000-2001 marks the seventeenth year that the Lawrence Hall of Science has been awarded a California State Department of Education grant to implement the highly successful intergenerational program: Youth and Seniors: Science Discovery Workshops. This project is funded by the State to provide unique educational experiences for students and retired adults.
Over the years, many funding groups, school groups, and intergenerational programs have provided additional support for the Youth and Seniors program to allow more schools to participate. In Berkeley, Youth and Seniors works closely with the Senior Scholars Program at Malcolm X School. Senior Scholars is an intergenerational program which provides art, language and science enrichment workshops for students taught by volunteers. In Oakland, Youth and Seniors worked with the UC Botanical Gardens at Martin Luther King Middle School and the LHS Family Health group at Lazear Elementary.
Youth and Seniors relies on its talented pool of volunteers to provide the enthusiasm and expertise to make each workshop a special experience for students and adults alike. This year, we are making a particular effort to recruit grandparents and other community volunteers of varied backgrounds and cultures to emphasize the intergenerational spirit of the project. Volunteer training sessions are held during the school year at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

Succour for senior citizens
The MMU is the first project to be directly handled by HelpAge. It takes medical help to the doorstep of nearly 3000 senior citizens in the Chennai slums. ``If elders remain healthy they are not seen as a liability by the family that is struggling to meet ends,'' says Indrani Rajadurai, Joint Director, Southern Region, HelpAge India. ``Treatment costs money, they need to be escorted to hospital where they are generally not a priority. They cannot wait in time-consuming queues. The family ignores them or simply throws them out." Panneerselvam, Project Officer, MMU first visits the slums for a first-hand appraisal. With the help of local volunteers the old in need of medical help are informed of the MMU's visit. The place and date where they need to gather are fixed. In most places the doctors ``have no choice but to examine them in the vehicle itself. Though the unit is equipped for this, summer days can be very hot inside." ``We have a good rapport with all major government hospitals,'' he says. ``So treatment is hassle-free. We provide transport for hospital visits and spectacles where needed. We get specialists to visit the elderly in some areas."

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Family Life Education certificate program is modeled after the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) CFLE Standards and Criteria. The goal of the program is to prepare students to provide Family Life Education programs in schools, churches, youth programs, family service agencies, and other areas of the community. A core belief of the program is that even credentialed and experienced teachers can be unprepared or under-prepared to teach the subjects subsumed under Family Life Education. The certificate program is designed to cover the ten family life substance areas delineated and required by NCFR. (See list below). While the program is designed to assist students in obtaining provisional Certifications through NCFR, a campus certificate is awarded upon graduation provided all certificate and degree requirements have been fulfilled.
Note: This program is taken concurrently with established degree requirements. The majority of courses for the certificate program are applicable toward course requirements for a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. The certificate is not a teaching credential. In conjunction with a BA or MA degree or a state teaching credential, it may be helpful in obtaining employment as a Family Life Educator.

needs to build a sound system of providing economic support to senior citizens, through the combined efforts of governments, society, family and individuals.
http://www.china.org.cn/english/GS-e/17439.htm
Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Ambitious Care Plan for Senior Citizens Senior citizens in China are expected to enjoy a better life in the near future, according to a 10th five-year plan for aged people (2001-05) released by the State Council, the Chinese cabinet. All provincial governments are urged to "earnestly implement the plan'' so as to create a favorable living condition for the elderly. According to official figures, the number of people over 60 years of age is estimated to reach 280 million by 2025 and 400 million by 2050. The aim of the plan is to establish a system allowing senior citizens to receive satisfactory welfare services and required medical treatment, enjoy entertainment activities, continue learning and find opportunities to contribute to society. A major principle stressed in the plan is establishing a social security system for seniors that adapts to the requirements of a socialist market economy. The plan targets five sectors in which Chinese senior citizens will enjoy better services: economic support, medical care, daily life and cultural activities, and the guarantee of legal rights. Specifically, China needs to build a sound system of providing economic support to senior citizens, through the combined efforts of governments, society, family and individuals.

Small Business Tips sponsored by Con artists seize on new drug discount plan Seniors warned about ID theft, fraudulent cards By Bob Sullivan Technology correspondent MSNBC Updated: 5:31 p.m. ET May 14, 2004 As if sorting through the 70 or so new Medicare-approved prescription drug discount programs wasn't confusing enough, senior citizens now have something else to worry about: con artists taking advantage of the mess. Scattered reports from around the United States indicate criminals are using this month's launch of the discount program to sell bogus cards or commit identity theft. advertisement
The prescription drug program takes effect June 1, and providers began to sell the cards last week. With them, qualifying seniors can obtain discounts of 10 to 25 percent on medication. The program is temporary, a bridge to more dramatic Medicare reforms coming in 2006. For now, the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 has created a competitive marketplace for discount drug plans, approving about 70 different national and state plans operated by private companies.
