William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Searing will travel to Senegal to help the Historical Museum on Goree Island and the L'Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire-Cheikh Anta Diop develop a new exhibit on the history of slavery and the slave trade. Additionally, he will conduct research exploring the role of religion and ethnicity in resistance to the slave trade, slavery and colonialism. "Goree Island attracts a large number of visitors everyday, most of whom come because the island evokes the tragic history of the slave trade," said Searing. "It is a world historic site, and I am grateful to be selected as a part of this collaborative project."

History Following the World Conference on Education For All, held in Jomtien (Thailand) in 1990, the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA), in collaboration with the World Federation of UNESCO Associations, Centres and Clubs (FMACU) as well as government services in various countries, launched an initiative consisting in promoting literacy and post-literacy in sub-Saharan African countries through Educational Resources Centres (ERC). The first ERCs were set up in Senegal within the framework of the movement entitled " Literacy caravan ", which consisted in organising educational materials fairs in all regions of the country. These fairs esentially aimed at promoting literacy, particularly post-literacy, in the rural areas, by improving the relevance and quality of available teaching materials in the national and official languages by strengthening contacts between producers and consumers. These fairs were focused on 4 thematic modules: 1. Be literate, Why ? How ?

Senegal: Is the end in sight for excision in Fouladou?
    21 June, 1996.
5- 7 June, the small village of Sare Yoba Kani in the rural community of Salikegne 20 km south of Kolda, the regional capital of the middle Casamance river valley in Senegal, was the site of a village seminar to discuss the future of excision. Two ethnic groups live in the Fouladou region, the Fulah and Mandinkas. Both practice excision. The predominant religion is Islam. The seminar was an initiative by the Sare Yoba Kani villlage community action and development programme (PADEC/SYK) which also caters for neighbouring communities in Guinea Bissau (the border runs two kilometres from the village). The meeting received the financial support of CI-AF Geneva, (the Inter African Committee on Traditional Practices affecting women's and children's health). This kind of meeting is the logical consequence of work being undertaken for several years by ENDA-SYNFEV (Synergy, gender and development) and Enda ACAS (Initiatives in Casamance), two teams of the international environment and development organisation ENDA Tiers-Monde based in Dakar Senegal and supported by CI-AF. The work over the years includes statistical research, national, regional and inter-regional meetings, international networking, and thematic and local actions. Since they were involved from the early stages of the process, the populations of Sare Yoba Kani wanted delicate questions such as excision to be dealt with within their local environment.
