- Face Music / Albi - last update 06-2004 Face Music - the idea arose from the need to build bridges, to contribute to a better understanding of other cultures and minorities. It all started with concerts (under the banner of the "Music Circus Association") in the Canton of Thurgau, the chosen home of the founder, Urs-Albert, of Face Music. Here the idea was put into practice of bringing new music into the region in order to inject a little more life into the existing local scene. Many people had had enough of always having to turn to the big cities, and wanted certain activities to be created in country areas. The effort was already being made to provide a platform for young people and to open their minds to music as an expression of joy and a way of encountering other cultures. Quality was called for, a route away from the cult of the star and back to music as an experience containing a certain degree of intimacy between the performers and the audience. Music is meant to have an effect on other people, to communicate a mood and a message. Music can be entertaining and witty, but ought not to be simply a superficial background noise, even if it often is no more than that. It can also indicate problem areas. It is not supposed to push everyday worries into the background, like a sort of "machine music" generated more by producers than by musicians. The musicians want their personal music, and themselves, to be taken seriously. As in life in general, tolerance needs to be shown and the attempt made to feel one's way into other people's situations, rather than simply taking over "pre-chewed" fashion-music.

Following on the success of this pilot activity, WorLD expanded to an additional eight schools, which went online in February 1998. The World Bank-financed Education and Human Resources Development Project has contributed in making financial resources available for the rehabilitation and networking of computer labs, as well as providing initial computer literacy training to our participants. World Links has since expanded to 40 schools throughout the country, with eleven more schools expected to join in the next year. 320 teachers have received formal World Links training, and 500 additional teachers have been trained locally, with over 20,000 students now involved in World Links activities. The great success of World Links in Senegal has led to the creation of four regional training centres, and Senegal has become the regional focal point for expanded World Links activities in West Africa.

The Status of Human Rights Organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
Senegal
BACKGROUND Since Senegal attained independence in 1960, the country has functioned with a liberal democratic, constitutional system of government. A multi-party system has been the norm of the Senegalese polity. One legacy of the country's colonial history is that Senegal has produced one of Africa's best intelligentsia. Senegal is a country of ethnic and religious diversity, which has a cosmopolitan outlook on issues. It has, on the whole, a tradition of pluralism, with a highly-organized civil society, including trade unionists, students, academics and other professionals. The pluralistic character of the society is expressed through the lively, albeit often elitist, discourse which is reflected in the spectrum of print media which exists in the country. Senegal has also had strong legal and political institutions since independence. The Senegalese Constitution of 1963 proclaimed respect for freedom and liberties and provided for their protection. It protects political liberties, the right to form trade unions, rights of the individual, freedom of worship, right to property and other economic and social rights. The country has ratified or acceded to ten international human rights covenants and conventions without any reservations. It also ratified the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights in 1982. Since 1988, however, the Senegalese state has been sliding gradually into a type of "democratic authoritarianism." Certain articulate sectors of the society challenged the election results of 1988 as having been rigged, and considerable violence ensued. Since that time, the government appears to be narrowing the space for civil society. One study, for example, indicates that from February 1988 to the beginning of November 1993, the government authorized only three applications related to the right to assemble and demonstrate. As recently as March 8, 1994, the authorities refused permission for a number of groups to demonstrate in celebration of International Women's Day.

    51. A Brief History Of Voodoo
A Brief history Of Voodoo by Reverend Severina KarunaMayi of Guinea) from what isnow senegal and Gambia brought with them their beliefs and regional practices
    http://www.omplace.com/articles/Voodoo_History.html
    A Brief History Of Voodoo
by Reverend Severina KarunaMayi Singh / Voodoo Priestess and Medicine Woman

The practice of Voodoo is probably as old as the African continent itself. Sometimes written Voudou, Vodou or Voudun, the word itself means God Creator or Great Spirit. It has been greatly distorted and misused; human sacrifices, vampires, dripping blood and devil worship all make the stuff of spooky novels and Hollywood movies. Yet none of these originated with or ever belonged to Voodoo!
Voodoo is a life affirming practice that encourages its participants to better understand the natural processes of life and their own spiritual natures.
If one looks at the dictionary, Voodoo is likely to be defined as an ancient religion from Africa that involves the cult of Ancestors, of various animistic spirits, and the use of trances to communicate with such spirits. It is true that Voodoo did originate in Africa. Today it is practiced by millions throughout the world, in Africa, the Caribbean, Central, North and South America, in various forms, often with elements of catholicism mixed in. However, its main purpose remains as always to heal: to heal the individual in relationships within himself or herself, with others and ultimately with God.
Around 1510 the slave trade began, slaves being taken from the West Coast of Africa (Gulf of Guinea) from what is now Senegal and Gambia to the Congo region. The slaves who were torn from their native lands brought with them their beliefs and regional practices. Many were first brought to the Caribbean islands to work the plantations and be forcibly Christianized. Their owners ("masters") did not recognize the mystical qualities of their native ceremonies. Rather they considered them to be savages, incapable of abstract concepts or spirituality. Of course the denial of their humanity made it all so much easier to keep them as slaves. Yet in the terrible conditions of their enslavement, the Africans' only hope lay in their very faith. Amidst broken tribes and families, they found unity and solace in God and ancient rituals. It certainly also gave them a deep sense of inner freedom.
