    Activity:
    • Using available maps, have students work in pairs to label the map of Africa, and complete "Something to Think About." Locate Senegal and The Gambia; note the direction of your Peace Corps Volunteer's country, the United States, and France.
    • Distribute copies of the vegetation and rainfall maps found in grades 10 - 12 . Have students transfer the rainfall and vegetation information about West Africa onto their maps.

    Location:
    Senegal wraps around its smaller neighbor, The Gambia, to form the western bulge of Africa. It has a 330 mile coastline on the Atlantic. Mauritania and Mali are north and east and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau border on the south. Land Area:
    Senegal covers approximately 76,000 square miles, roughly equivalent in size to South Dakota. Terrain:
    The flat rolling plains in the northern region of the country are part of the Sahel desert. In the southeast plateaus rise from the foothills of the Gouta Djallon Mountains. Marshy Sswamps and tropical forests are found in southwest Senegal. The country's four main rivers are the Senegal, Saloum, Casamance and Gambia. Climate:
    The climate is as varied as the terrain. There are two seasons, rainy and dry. The rainy season lasts from June through October. Along the coast the weather tends to be breezy and cooler while further inland it is drier in the north and more tropical in the south. Temperatures range from 64 to 86 degrees.

    ESTIMATED 2000 POPULATION: Senegal is located on the west coast of Africa. It is bound by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south, and it encloses the enclave of Gambia in the southwest. The country can be divided into six geographical regions. (1.) The Senegal River Valley. (2.) The coastal belt which contains small swamps, oases, creeks, channels and mud flats. (3.) The western plains which consist of dry and barren land. (4.) The Ferlo which is an inland continuation of the western plains and is semidesert. (5.) Casamance which is separated by Gambia and has better vegetation. (6.) The eastern plains which consists of poor pastureland. The principal rivers are the Senegal, Casamance, Sine and Saloum. Major Cities (pop. est.); Dakar 1,729,800, Thies 201,400, Kaolack 179,900, Ziguinchor 143,800, St. Louis 125,700 (1992). Land Use; forested 54%, pastures 16%, agricultural-cultivated 12%, other 18% (1993). CLIMATE: Senegal has a tropical climate with a wet season from June to September and high humidity along the coast. Rainfall decreases from the south with the wet season extending to October and an average precipitation varying from 1,500 mm (60 inches) to 1,000 mm (40 inches) in the north, to 510 mm (20 inches) in the east. The prevailing winds are the Harmattan in the dry season, which is a dust-laden wind from the Sahara Desert while gale force squalls or tornadoes occur at the beginning and end of the rainy season. Average temperature ranges in Dakar are from 18 to 26 degrees Celsius (64 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit) in January to 24 to 32 degrees Celsius (75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) in September.

    Department of Geography To the homepage of Department of Geography in Finnish To the homepage of Department of Geography in English Surviving city - Rufisque in Senegal The research problem of Rufisque concerns both informal and formal city planning; the private and public places and their functional construction. The problems of squatters are many. The rural-urban continuum of the migrants' flow is relevant in many respects. People's perceptions towards the environmental problems are the mixture of shared environment and social control in the countryside as compared to the break down of traditions in the behaviour of migrants in the city. There are different cultures in the city living next to each other, every one of them having a differet idea about the environment. The ecological footprint of the city is the formation of the functions in informal squattered settlements with the structure of their own planning. The official planning is too far from their everyday needs and actions. The purpose of this field study is to find out the possibilities to create more links between the informal and formal planning sectors in Rufisque. Contact person:
