Water and Culture
by Rebbecca and Jay Wozny , Saare Oumar, Senegal Superstitions about water abound. For example, if there is a problem with a well, the villagers say that there is a genie in the well. And, if there's a genie in the well, no one will use iteven if it's full of clean water. Another ceremony that involves water is tea-making. It is a daily event and an important aspect of Senegalese culture As a group sits in the shade of a tree and talks, one person pours tea from cup to cup, making foam. The entire process can take up to three hours. This tea-making ceremony gives Senegalese time to relax and enjoy one another's company. Occasionally, people fall into a well. Although adults or bigger children may survive with a few scratches or a nose full of water, small children usually drown. Again, this is attributed to a genie. by Catherine Guillard , Samba Diarry, Senegal by Enid Abrahami , Missirah Tabadian, Senegal I celebrated my 30th birthday in the small village of Missirah Tabadian. I'll never forget it! Weeks were spent in preparationshopping, cleaning, cooking, planning. Finally the day arrived. I woke up at 7:00 am to the steady rhythms of women pounding grain for the day's festivities. Already at this early hour my compound was filled with women from neighboring villages who had come to clean, chop, stir, pound, and cook. Without a doubt, it was a memorable 30th birthday.

That's the portrait of Africa to which most of the travel industry limits itself; the overwhelming majority of Africa tours tend to be wildlife safaris. For viewing an altogether different aspect of that immense continent - the vitally important cultures, politics, and society of Africa-the travel programs are few and rarely available for less than $4,000 or $5,000 per person. advertisement
Until now, that is. Just in the past several years, a handful of dedicated Africa tour operators have begun to offer travel programs to the cities (and therefore the actual life) of Africa, priced as low as $2,500, and occasionally, for a breathtaking $1,550, including round-trip airfare from the United States. Though these expenditures are far above the usual recommended levels of Budget Travel, they are at least explained by the high airfare cost for reaching most African capitals, and they are justified by the importance of the subject matter.

Seminar in African Art and Culture Art, Architecture and Tradition; Building Identity in West Africa
Prof. Peter Mark
Department of Art History
Wesleyan Universit
Email: pmark@wesleyan.edu
Course Description:
This seminar investigates some of the diverse ways in which West African peoples have articulated their sense of who they are by means of the buildings they construct and the material culture they create. We will focus on architecture in historical perspective, and on the contemporary phenomenon of revitalized ritual and folklore. The course begins by asking fundamental questions about Art History. Is the discipline able to encompass broad issues of contemporary African culture and identity? Is African Art itself a meaningful concept? Or is it hopelessly bound to Western culture? At the same time, the introductory meetings offer a critical reevaluation of other analytical categories. If we retain the concept of "African art," contemporary culture forces us to redefine its boundaries to include such largely twentieth century phenomena as folkloric dance and the re-creation of self-consciously "traditional" religious rituals. And the African subjects of our study, too, must be redefined, insofar as the "ethnic group," viewed in historical perspective, ceases to exist as a fixed feature of the African cultural landscape. Ethnic identity is itself in constant change. What is ethnicity anyway, and how is ethnic identity related to culture?

CULTURAL DOMAIN
It seems that Senegal has always played a major part in Black Africa's cultural life.
During the XIXth century, men such as El Hadj Omar Tali, Cheikh Amadou Bamba , El Hadj Malick Sy were involved in the integration of Senegal in the cultural moslem world.
Later, and Cheikh Anta Diop endeavoured to contribute to the evolution of Pan Africanism and at the same time restore the Negro-African culture.
The first World Festival of Negro Arts, which was organized in Dakar in 1966 was one of the greatest events in Senegal's cultural life.
