On August 20, 1960, Senegal withdrew from the federation and became a separate republic, while the former French Sudan kept the name of Mali The first Europeans to reach the mouth of the Senegal River and start trading with the native Wolof were the Portuguese, in the mid 15th century. About 150 years later the Dutch gained control of the seafaring trade, and by 1700 it was the French who dominated commerce along the coast.

Dakar Culture Dakar is the nation's capital and its largest city. The climate is as varied as the terrain. There are two seasons, rainy and dry. The rainy season lasts from June through October. Along the coast the weather tends to be breezy and cooler while further inland it is drier in the north and more tropical in the south. Temperatures range from 64 to 86 degrees. The economy of Senegal is relatively diversified. The main agricultural crop is groundnuts. Other crops are maize, millet, beans, rice, sugar and cotton. Indu stries include textile manufacturing and food processing as well as petroleum and phosphate production. Fishing industries have become the largest export earner. Tourism is also a growing sector of the economy. The Paris to Dakar Rally has the reputation of being the most trying off-road race in the world. The object of this event is for man and car to take on the elements and see who wins. Driving everything from specially-built vehicles to Hummers and low- cost cars, teams hit the road in Paris. Cape Skirring, a place regarded as having the most beautiful beaches in West africa. Thebest way to understand the culture and really exchange with the people
http://www.africatravelling.net/senegal/casamance/casamance_culture.htm
Casamance - Culture A long strip of land about 24 miles wide, Casamance extends well over a hundred miles from west to east. In contrast, with the rest of the country, Casamance offers the richness of a mosaic perpetually renewed by its landscapes. Savannah, bush, majestic forests, coconut palm groves rustling with the ocean breeze - the list is endless. Here, each of the tropical essences is present, imposing baobabs, mangroves with multiple roots, glittering flame trees, undulating palm groves, glistening bourgainvilleas, fragrant eucalyptus trees and the most majestic of all, the kapok tree, whose twisted trunk is sometimes more than two meters thick. The Casamance region is home to a very traditional group: the Diolas and their cousins, the Mandjakes and the Balantes. They live in a very lush area of deep forests and perform their initiation ceremonies in the "sacred woods". Some are annual, others take place every 30 to 40 years. The best way to understand the culture and really exchange with the people is through the highly successful "integrated rural tourism". The people of fifteen villages have built huts exactly like theirs, at the periphery of the village, and have added a few amenities for the tourists. Their guests eat the food prepared by the women, take pirogue trips with the men, enjoy the calm life of the village and the vitality of the numerous traditional dances and ceremonies. All proceeds remain in the village and are used in development projects.

WEST AFRICA BY BICYCLE
For those who love to interact with people and gain a better understanding of the world when they travel, the Bicycle Africa schedules several cross-cultural programs in West Africa each year: "Sahel Journey" and "West Africa People-to-People." Each two-week itinerary is unique. Consecutive programs are easily combined for a more extensive trip. All of West Africa is very rich in cultural and history. We select from the best. Participants have the opportunity to stay in rural villages, learn about daytoday life, meet artisans, health care personnel, educators and government officials and visit historic and cultural sites. Those who continue on to the coast can celebrate by relaxing on the beach. Highlights of the Mali program are visits to the renowned Timbuktu (Tombouctou), Mopti and Djenne, the fascinating enclave of the Dogon people, with its many sacred sites and a truly extraordinary riverboat trip on the Niger River. A few of the special features of the programs in the coastal countries are the variety of ethnic groups, visits to museums and markets, historic sites, traditional shrines and countless warm and welcoming rural villages.

As in many countries, disadvantage accumulates at the level of women and girls. In 1995, female literacy countrywide was just over half the rate for men (23 percent compared to 44 percent), and the discrepancy was still greater in rural areas.
Tostan, literally means "breaking out of the egg" in Wolof, the language spoken by the majority of Senegal's 7.9 million people and is among a number of innovative rural development and women's education initiatives that are addressing the problem at its source. It offers an 18-month learning program that combines basic education in national languages with practical development issues, and provides rural people with the resources to improve their standard of living while fostering increased confidence in their way of life.

The 40-year rule of Senegal's Socialist Party came to a peaceful end in March 2000.
President Abdou Diouf was voted out of office in elections hailed as a rare democratic power transfer on a continent plagued by coups, civil wars and election fraud. For the Senegalese, however, political participation and peaceful leadership changes were not new. Even as a colony Senegal had representatives in the French parliament. And the promoter of African culture, Leopold Senghor, who became president at independence in 1960, voluntarily handed over power to Mr Diouf in 1980. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA Senegal is on the western-most part of the bulge of Africa and includes desert in the north and a moist, tropical south. Slaves, ivory and gold were exported from the coast during the 17th and 18th centuries and now the economy is based mainly on agriculture. Since independence a low-level separatist war has been going on in the southern Casamance region, which is separated from the rest of the country by The Gambia.

Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Senegal plays a key role in West Africa’s arts, culture, and politics, despite its small size and population. For the last three centuries, Senegal has inspired poets, novelists, and researchers, emerging as one of the most significant patrons of the arts in all of Africa. Led to independence by internationally acclaimed poet and philosopher Leopold Senghor, Senegal has throughout its history emphasized the role of arts and culture in society. Dakar, an exciting cosmopolitan city, juts into the ocean on the Cap Vert peninsula. From its shores you can see Gor©e Island, once witness to the forced migration of enslaved Africans, today a relaxed, pedestrian-only community of artisans and craftspeople. Excursions to Petite C´te, a region known for its preservation of traditional and local cultures, and the city of Saint Louis, famed for its rich colonial heritage and architecture, add to your appreciation of Senegal’s enormous contribution to African art and culture.

Senegal's largest ethnic group, the Wolof, have co-existed mostly peacefully with the Fulani, Tukulor, Serer and Jola, although the Malinke in the southern Casamance province have maintained an on-and-off independence struggle that has yet to reach a clear resolution. With that exception, modern Senegal is a substantially stable, prosperous and democratic African nation, indeed such a model of African success that President George W. Bush chose to begin his historic 2003 visit to Africa here. He was received by President Abdoulaye Wade, one of the most outspoken, principled and iconoclastic Africa leaders on the scene today. Music in Senegal
Senegal hosts one of the most developed West African music industries. Senegal's top singer/bandleadersYoussou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, Ismael Lô, Cheikh Lô, and Thione Seckhave earned loyal international followings. Singer Omar Pene with his band Super Diamono is less known around the world, but in Senegal, he shares the exalted upper tier of the country's rich musical pantheon. Most of Senegal's superstars are men, but not all. Kine Lam and Coumba Gawlo Seck are two of the most prominent among many powerful and beloved female singers. Meanwhile, innovative new artists turn up in the cassette stalls of Dakar's crowded markets all the time. Alioune Kasse, Souleymane Faye, Madou Diabate are but a few of the many names you'll find there. Most of these artists perform in Senegal's pre-eminent music genre
